Description

Few things are as iconic as the American barn; perhaps that's why arriving here brings a sense of 'home' to our guests. The Green Gate Barn Home is our 1935 hay barn deconstructed in 2007 then meticulously rebuilt into the modern, breathtaking architectural experience it is today. The project followed the LEED program (a strict green-building criteria), with every effort made to address energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, and the use of natural/local/non-toxic building materials throughout, while also preserving its historic elements and hand-crafted feel of the original structure. Taking over 3 years to complete, every room was created with intention, with heart, and it shows.

The main floor begins with a foyer and half-bath, which opens to a roomy kitchen and living space. The kitchen contains professional appliances and cookware, a farm sink, a 9 foot white pine bar, and hand formed concrete countertops. The adjoining living room has lounge furniture, flat-screen TV, and a wood pellet burning stove. The dining room is situated inside the attached silo, with a unique hand crafted round table and cuircular booth seating that is often our guests’ favorite feature of the entire house.

The artistic curved staircase fabricated from locally salvaged maple leads to the second story sleeping area. The loft area is separated into semi-private spaces (each has a private entry door and partition wall, but open overhead due to the high vaulted ceiling). Each bedroom contains a queen bed with organic linens and comforters, timber-framed elements, reclaimed wide plank flooring and vintage decor. The larger of the two bedrooms also contains a twin bed. The second story of the attached silo houses the main bathroom with custom fixtures and a refurbished 1928 claw foot tub/shower.

“Ski Weekend at Green Gate Guest House”

The accomodations were nothing short of fabulous. From the organic towels and linens to the barn itself the commitment of the owners to being eco-friendly and environmentally responsible is obvious. Every detail has been thoughtfully planned out to maximize use of existing materials in creative ways. It was just a short hike to the Mesabi Bike Trail and a public boat access. We were able to take our kayaks right from the barn to the water. It feels like you are in the middle of the wilderness, yet the highway is less than a half mile away. Occasionally we could hear cars, but it wasn't enough to bother us. The owners also live in another house on-site and were available whenever we had a question about where to go to eat, hike, bike, swim, etc! We still can't get over the history of the property and the uniqueness of Green Gate itself. It is a must stay!!
