Little Island House has an UPSTAIRS and a DOWNSTAIRS apartment.
The UPSTAIRS apartment is entered by the outside stairway to the deck and sliding glass door, located on the left of the house from the parking area. The deck continues around the corner across the entire harbor-facing side of the house. Inside, the living room and dining room area has cathedral ceiling and skylight with a granite floor-to-ceiling fireplace. Large windows are all around; the sliding glass door completes the panoramic view. The kitchen--newly renovated in 2015--is well supplied, with a great view of its own. The bedroom, with skylight, is on the third floor and has a queen-size bed. The bathroom/shower is around the corner from the kitchen. The apartment sleeps two.
The Upstairs apartment has central heat for the off season, excellent ventilation in summer (with box fan and two smaller fans if needed) and all the firewood one would like for a cozy fire anytime. Also: cable TV, high-speed internet, wi-fi, all linens (bed, bath, and kitchen), and well-equipped kitchen. Immaculately clean, lovely decor. Outdoors: deck furniture and grill. No smoking, no pets.
Please add 9% Maine State Lodging Tax, and $50 refundable cleaning deposit.
Refund policy: refund if re-rented.

“Best place ever”
We were fortunate that someone had to cancel their reservation at the last minute as our schedule unexpectedly opened up. We spent the best week ever in the little seaside fishing village of Bass Harbor, rocked to sleep by the sound of the waves lapping on the shore and awakened by the gentle sound of the fishing boats hauling out to see at the crack of dawn, as the fog gently lifted on the harbor. We stayed in the downstairs unit of Little Island House. We barely ever saw the couple who was staying upstairs. Our host Charlene Strauss was wonderful, both discrete and accommodating and gracious. The house was immaculate. From the bedding and the thick towels to the well-equipped kitchen, the exquisite prints on the walls, the seaside wraparound porch with a direct view on the harbor, the available bbq and the beach chairs that Charlene graciously lent us, everything down to a T was spectacular in its own laid back way. Bass Harbor only gets traffic because it is the point of departure for the little ferry to Swan Island, but we neither saw nor heard any of it from the house. It is such a quiet retreat, far enough away from the crowds of Bar Harbor (30 minute car ride away) and acadia National Park, yet close enough to drive there if so inclined. There are 2 restaurants and 1 take-out place. We also discovered the Ravenswood boutique on McMullan ave, which is definitely worth a visit. The elderly owners, Joe and anne Paradise, who carve birds and sell treasures old and new, are delightful and the new carving of the Yellow Leg that we purchased there reminds me of our wonderful week in Bass Harbor. Crowd lovers please abstain! Thank you Charlene! We hope to come back soon.
“Little Island House is the best place to enjoy acadia.”
Acadia has been calling us back for many years. We've stayed in hotels, bed and breakfasts and an apartment in SW Harbor. But Little Island House is the best! The harbor is the most interesting on acadia. You have views of lobster boats, sailing vessels, wildlife and plain folks making their living from the sea. You really get a birds eye view of seafaring life in Maine. And the house is perfect. The kitchen is well equipped for those who like to boil lobster, make gumbo or grill a steak. It's been the best 3 weeks we've spent on Mt. Desert Island. Since we are almost 80 years old, I don't know if we will return but we have great memories of the time spent at the Little Island House.
“Perfect slice of Peace”
The Little Island House is the perfect place to stay when you journey to Maine. It is located in Bass Harbor, which is a peaceful village where lobster fishermen and women come and go. Less than a block from the house is a place to purchase crab and live lobster which you can steam in a kitchen which has Everything you could possibly need. If you are not interested in cooking, a wharf restaurant is close by and will meet your every need. The bed and bedding were perfect. Everything was very comfortable. From your little house, you can quickly jump to other villages and acadia National Park. My favorite part was sitting on the porch watching boats come in and out of the harbor. We also took a boat trip which left from the dock near the house. We saw the part of Maine that you can only see from a boat.
