“Very relaxing”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2014

Starfish Blue certainly lived up to our expectations for a relaxing Fijian holiday. We enjoy self sufficiency and this fitted the bill perfectly, not being part of a packaged resort however having the freedom to use Wananavu Resorts facilities only five minutes walk away. We went with two teenage girls and for them to have their own air-conditioned rooms made our stay very pleasant (for any one who has travelled with teenagers, you'll know what I mean!) In a resort we would have been in the same room or at best small one room unit with people in the living area. The bedroom upstairs was our 'adult' sanctuary and as other reviewers said, we didn't need the air-con, just left the louvres open and the breeze was lovely and cooling. Rozi and Reshmi, the maids were wonderful and there to greet us with fresh flowers, fruit and fresh fruit juice, and they were great throughout our stay. We chose not to have them come every day, and got them to prepare three evening meals which were fantastic and great value for money with beautiful Kokonda and Samosa's. They always supplied fresh flowers, fruit and fruit juice when they came. The pool was great for cooling off in after lazing reading books and generally chilling out, and the girls spent a lot of time in there. It was a wonderful place to sit beside looking at the ocean and island views, having fresh fruit salad and coconut for breakfast. Snorkelling off the beach was better than expected with a good variety of coral and fish to see. We were pleased we took some snorkel gear though as most of what was there was broken or worn out (Beth advises this will be replaced) Everything we needed to be self sufficient was there and we arranged transport from the airport through Jai and Suncoast Tours and Taxis which was good as we stopped at Tavua for supplies. We were a bit tired from a 3.30 am start to catch flights and were disappointed with the fruit and vege at the supermarket, until we loaded up our groceries and pointed this out to our driver, and he pointed us to a local market adjacent where we found an abundance of fruit and vege and so cheap! I'd recommend buying frozen chickens as there is a good size fridge freezer and a really good easy to use rotisserie that did the chicken to perfection, which was a quick and easy way to cook and have hot meals with leftovers for lunch. There is a supermarket and local market at nearby Rakiraki which we visited and found everything we needed there. Pros / Cons We really appreciated the privacy and seclusion of Starfish Blue but that was a pro and con with the trade-off being the need for transport and we debated hiring a vehicle. We didn't as we decided we wouldn't have utilised it. This made us reliant on Suncoast tours and there were occaisions it would have been easy to have our own vehicle to explore a bit more, visit Volivoli, find fresh fish etc. The worst point was the unexpected arrival of a 'security guard' at 6pm on our first night when the girls were enjoying the pool after a long days travel. He took up residence at the outside hanging bed and the girls felt very uncomfortable and didn't use the pool at any time after his arrival for the duration of our stay. This also curtailed our privacy and we weren't able to enjoy sitting outside having a drink in the evening enjoying the breeze and views, or relaxing on the hanging bed. I asked the security guard not to come until after 9pm but he insisted he had to be there at 6pm, and when I raised this with Jai and said we didn't want a security guard nothing changed either which was disappointing. My job is law related and I saw no need for a security guard and there were other private holiday homes that were nearby that had no guards. Unfortunately Wi-Fi was non existent so I couldn't raise this with Beth at the time, but she has since advised he shouldn't have been there and wouldn't be in the future but this didn't help the tarnish it put on our stay. Despite this, would we go back, yes! It was great for a family holiday and would be ideal for 3 couples to have an island break, yet have their own space and freedom.

“Must Return To Starfish Blue”

Reviewed 19 Sep 2013

Did we love staying at Starfish Blue? Wow, yes. Not sure where to begin. I'll start with the pros and then talk about the cons. Pros: The view was spectacular, the home was perfect (the pool was five steps from the house, well laid out kitchen, spectacular master bedroom upstairs, completely private setting.) The hanging bed on the edge of the property was our hangout every morning as we watched the sunrise. A perfect spot for coffee and reading and romantic conversation. The staff at Starfish were so friendly (although everyone we met in Fiji was kind) and extremely responsive to anything we asked for. We went scuba diving, snorkeling right off the beach at Starfish Blue, went to a deserted beach, took a tour to an authentic Fijian village ... you won't lack for things to do. Now the cons: There really weren't any except to say that Starfish Blue is situated on the non-commercial side of the island. In other words, if you're looking for nightlife, big shopping areas, etc. this probably isn't the place for you. We loved being away from all the tourist traps, but some people like doing the more typical touristy things, so just a heads up that this is place to get away from it all, not hit a lot of nightclubs. There are a couple of 50-60 room resorts nearby and we did go there a few times for dinner and swam in their pools. (Starfish has an arrangement with them where you can take part in their restaurants and amenities which is really nice.) This was our first time to Fiji and we are definitely coming back to Starfish.

“Wonderful spot of paradise”

Reviewed 11 Aug 2013

My fourth visit to Fiji, this first stay in Starfish Blue, Rakiraki is certainly the best Fijian experience, end to end. Beth, the owner, whilst located in the us, was extremely friendly, accessible and highly supportive throughout the booking - pre and post booking. Beth is a book of knowledge on the local area of Rakiraki, and was able to give me a very well informed overview of the property, local amenities, lifestyle tips to make the stay even better, and connect me with locals who could support us through our stay to make the overall experience seamless - taxi service, boat trip, cooking etc... The staff employed at Starfish Blue are absolutely lovely, and were very key to us having such an amazing stay. They are highly accessible yet very discreet. They were able to provide us with every request - even help with sourcing a birthday cake and preparing a special dinner, last minute, for a guest, or building a temporary shade on their boat to protect the children from the sun on a day boat trip. The property is very private, and quiet, which is exactly what we needed. The house is comfortable and spacious and very clean. The kitchen is well equipped, although the knives and cut boards could do with an upgrade :) There is DVD/Video/TV for the kids, which was handy for the age group travelling in our party. The outlook from the villa is stunning. I didn't read at all during the break, as the scenery was the best distraction. Don't let the 2.5hr transfer time from Nadi put you off from considering this place for your holiday. I would definitely return again but suggest you plan a food/grocery shopping stop within the first day of arrival - stock up well.

“Relaxing in Paradise”

We have been visiting Fiji since the 1980's and can safely say that Starfish Blue is one of the nicest places to stay. Every need has been anticipated and the setting and views are stunning. We enjoyed the privacy and the feeling of being on our own island. The proximity to Wananavu means that meals, drinks, and activities are not far away, and the staff were wonderful. Thanks, Beth.

“The ultimate get away!”

This home has it all! An amazing master suite with a private balcony, 2 additional private bedrooms with their own bath. Great kitchen with all the ammenities, private pool w/ spa that overlooks the beautiful water, beachfront! Panoramic view of islands from every room. Away from it all in a quiet secluded neighborhood. Resort a few minutes away with activities, restaurant, and spa. Helpful, friendly staff that clean daily. Great diving and kayaking! The perfect place to unwind and recharge!

Response from the owner Dan and Melinda, Thank you for the kind review! I was a pleasure to welcome back return guests! I'm so glad that Starfish Blue played a part in your relaxing vacation. Warmest Regards, Beth Carson

“Tears in our eyes when we left!”

Reviewed 2 Mar 2013

We recently had the pleasure of staying at Starfish Blue for 2 weeks - Feb 9-23. There were 5 of us - all from Canada (2 couples and 1 single woman). We had booked this villa with Beth back in May of 2012 and at that time had managed to purchase flights at almost 1/2 the cost of what they are now. One of the couples were having their wedding at the Wananuva Resort next door. They took care of everything and couldn't have been more friendly or helpful with the wedding and just in general - we ate there quite often as it was just a quick walk away by path or beach. The villa itself was very well maintained and equipped with everything you need. The girls - Rozy and Reshmi cleaned every day and also cooked for us 1 night - it was delicious. We had Renu come and give us massages on 3 different days and she was great! The snorkeling in the area was outstanding. We went to Raki Raki a few times and had a ball there - between the market and the grocery store, the people were wonderful. The whole area reminds me of the Caribbean 20 years ago as it is fairly rugged and mostly undeveloped, thus being a perfect place to relax and de-stress! Jai was available whenever we needed him and set up taxis at an hours notice. The hanging bed was one of my favourites and I will miss watching the sunrises from there with my "coffee and baileys". Fiji has been on my "bucket list" for years and Starfish Blue was the ultimate place to stay. "Vinaka" to all that made it so special - "til we meet again" and we will.

Response from the owner Laura, Thank you for the kind words! I agree, leaving is SO hard! Wananavu is brilliant with weddings- I knew you would be in good hands, and I'm glad that everything worked out beautifully. I do hope we see you again, Vinaka Vakalevu! Beth Carson

“A Tropical Timewarp Gem!”

We have lived in Hawaii for over 40 years and while we wouldn't live anywhere else, we often lament the changes we've witnessed over the decades. On our way to New Zealand, we decided to conduct a minor exploration of Fiji and rented Starfish Blue for a few nights. If you are looking for a Hawaii of the 1950's, give Fiji and Starfish Blue a try. The spacious, well equipped/furnished home is lovely with a to die for pool, privacy, views and household service,. The nearby (5 minute walk) resort is old school - low rise, beautiful grounds, great pool, tennis, restaurant/bar, and marina with water taxis and charters for fishing, diving, snorkeling, island hopping. Do rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle at the airport - the main highway is fine, but 4 wheel drive comes in handy for the side roads. Also, if you enjoy Indian Cuisine, the housekeepers will prepare a superb meal for you at a very reasonable price. Beth is easy to work with and her property manager Jai will greet you and explain the workings of the 3 bedroom home.

Response from the owner David, Aloha and Bula and thank you for the kind review. I agree- I love Hawaii- the quieter North Shore on Oahu and the volcano on the Big Island. When I found Fiji- I knew this was the best of both worlds. The beauty of Hawaii with the culture still intact. I'm so glad you enjoyed your time in Fiji! Thank you for taking the time to review Starfish Blue. Warmest Regards, Beth Carson

“9 days of pure bliss!”

Reviewed 7 Feb 2013

Well where do I start! We had such a great holiday. Felt like we were in heaven as soon as we got to this amazing house. The lovely house ladies were there to greet us. Big smiles and very welcoming. They had even made us fresh lemonade. They made us feel like royalty. We met Jai the property manager. He was always at the ready to help. An air conditioner in a bedroom stopped working. Jai had the guys out within an hour or two and fitted a brand new one and he waited until they had left spending his time talking with us about everything in general. He also owns suncoast taxis and tours and he really goes out of his way to help where he can. Mahen, the groundsman was also excellent. He sat with us a couple of times and spoke about Fiji tradition. I had so many questions and he quite happily answered them all. He had even offered to drive us to Suva. The home itself was absolutely stunning. It has everything you need to self cater or had a few resorts fairly close if you want to dine out which we did quite often. The service at wananavu and volivoli was great. You get all the privileges that a resort guest will get. The house is in a great location, far enough away from the retrace but close enough to town to get supplies. This was our best holiday ever. My kids loved the pool practically living in there. All thanks to Beth and her wonderful group of staff. The house was great but it was the staff who made it so memorable for us. Thankyou so much for sharing your slice of paradise with us. We definitely will be back again.

Response from the owner Many thanks for the lovely review. Glad to know the beautiful staff took good care of you. One of the benefits of staying in a home is that you get to know the locals a bit better, if you want. We hope to have you back, soon! Warmest Regards, Beth Carson

“Forget the World when you're here...”

Reviewed 10 Dec 2012

Fiji is a great place to forget that there's another world where rats race. Starfish Blue certainly contributes to giving Fiji that reputation! Great place to relax with not a care in the world. Rooms are very comfortable, the place affords total privacy while at the same time giving you the luxury of someone to cook your meals (if you choose). Was there with family to just relax and that's exactly what we did - even snorkeling looked a chore! The infinity pool was as far as we got. No fellow tourists who make you look lazy if you don't engage in water sports or beachcombing - just be yourself and do exactly as you please. Experienced a home away from home!

Response from the owner Thank you so much for the review and pictures. Yes, Fiji is such a fabulous place. I have been to over 40 countries, but there's no where on the earth like Fiji for beautiful people and scenery. Yes, the relaxation concept is hard to beat- it was the first place in the world I felt completely and utterly at peace. Glad you enjoyed it and hope to have you back soon. Warmest Regards, Beth Carson

“Wonderful house, location, view and service.”

Reviewed 28 Nov 2012

We have rented houses and apartments in the us and abroad for a number of years and have enjoyed all of them. However, we believe that Starfish Blue is our all time favorite. The property was exactly as represented on the website. The house was clean and spotless, and fully supplied with everything we needed. The pool and grounds were perfectly maintained. We decided that the hanging bed is the closest thing to paradise on this earth. We had our morning coffee and watched the sunrise there every morning.

Response from the owner Wow! Thank you so much for the kind words. So glad you enjoyed your holiday. All of the staff, myself included, strive for excellence in every area. I'm happy you enjoyed Fiji and Starfish Blue as much as I do. Warmest Regards, Beth Carson
