“"Eric keeps tabs on the occupants - beware"”
First impressions - great little house very functional and in a serene and quite part of Tobermory, close to the heart of it all. Absolutely loved our stay...up until the end. I had booked the place initially to take into account 6 adults that would be staying in total. We have 3 kids under the age of 5 that were part of the stay as well. On the day off, we had a friend who surprised us by saying that he would be coming along for the mini-trip and wondered if this was something that could be done. Ofcourse naturally wanting to have him included in the family was nothing short of natural on our end to say "yes". Everything unravelled the morning after we work up at Anchors Aweigh. I received a call from Eric questioning me on the number of occupants in the house and that he had seen 4 cars in the driveway, I went on to explain that we were 7 adult with 3 children under the age of 5. This turned into a conversation around how this was uncalled for an he would have to charge us an extra $250.00 for the 2 days stay. Which is quite unreasonable to be honest, that is equivalent to booking a room at a 5 Star hotel for 2 days. What worried me the most is that Eric had come into the driveway to check on the number off cars that were there, which is a little disconcerting given that we had women and children as part of the group. We shrugged it off not wanting to ruin our trip and told ourselves that we would have a conversation with Eric when we handed over the keys to him. The day of checkout, cleaned the place, just the way we came into it, filled the propane tank to the brim as it is only the Canadian thing to do and be respectful. Eric came in and the conversation escalated to the point that he was threatening to have us kicked out initially but he dint and he had to call another friend to come as him backup in case of a fight. We were not in any such position with women and children inside and did echo that this was quite unreasonable and that we would settle with $200 to close off on the argument. He had kept tabs on us during our stay as at one point one of us had gone to the LCBO to buy liquor and had questioned on where that one individual was. In all honesty the trip itself was amazing because of the friends and family we went with. Eric unfortunately i am quite disappointed to say was not very becoming of an individual that caters to his clients. I still fail to see how $250 is a justifiable amount for a stay that only was supposed to cost us $680 (including taxes). Please do the math that 37% for an extra individual and you should not be charging for children under 5, their kids.
Response from the owner This Guest was advised up front that he had rented the 6 people Cottage for 6 people. Our Rules state that if more than 6 people, adults or children they will be asked to leave. I did concur to let them stay but at a premium as our septic system and well are very taxed with 10 plus people which he had in the Cottage. Rules are in place so this type of occurrence does not happen. These 3 men were in my face when I came to collect funds upon check out, They had only complained about things like propane and wi fi during check out, items which I would have corrected during their stay, all they had to do is call me. They obviously did not want me to come by and see the 10 plus people at the cottage. I reduced extra charge on the spot by $50 for the $25 propane fill.. The escalation came to a head when they pulled the race card at which point I called a friend to come up and stand by. I believe any establishment, 5 star or less would have asked the guests to leave if the rules were broken. This entire situation could have been avoided if the were honest and up front when they booked the cottage. If they had advised they had 10 people I would have directed them elsewhere. They did do a good job of leaving the cottage the way they found it. The correct thing for all folks who rent a cottage in Tobermory, or anywhere else, is to be honest and up front at the very time of booking and incidents will not happen.
“we had a great time in tobermory”
great location ,nice barbecue area ,comfortable beds, the house is old but functional,we had a great time in tobermory
The cottage is in a great location, and there are plenty of beds, the living room was big enough and the kitchen was well equipped. Itr was a really good price for what we got! On the down side, the cottage is a bit older so I was quite drafty, which is to be expected, and it smelt a bit, although it wasn't that bad
“Great place for family and friends”
This place was fantastic. Spacious, clean, comfortable, and super convenient in terms of its location. My friends and I loved staying there and will definitely go back to visit someday. I would recommend anyone that loves the outdoors and a quiet place to stay and relax with a book, wine, and music. Two thumbs up!
