“very disappointed”

Reviewed 4 Dec 2014

We stayed here in middle of a 3-week trip to Costa Rica, which is gorgeous country but we were very disappointed in accommodations and we both had about 150 bug bites after the first night there. Bathroom window allowed bugs entry and there were hundreds the next morning when we awoke with raised 1 inch welts all over our arms, legs that itched badly and did not respond to anything and lasted for over 3 months!!!! After second night there and local friends who visited and were horrified by our experience, we decided to leave and seek alternate lodging, despite having prepaid for a week. Caretaker Henry blamed bites on rainy summer but we spent 3 weeks in the Arenal area and did not get bitten anywhere else. Refrigerator froze our food, kitchen was poorly stocked, cutting board was moldy, several lights were burned out with no replacement bulbs, mold on ceiling, bed access extremely awkward as it is attached to wall on 3 sides and 2nd person must crawl over first person to get in and out of bed. I am not fastidious housekeeper and high maintenance person, but this was definitely below standards. Upon our return to US, I emailed owner Bret a detailed description of our experience and made suggestions for improvements; but he has not replied in anyway 4 months later nor responded with any kind of refund as we had expense and inconvenience of finding other housing. His lack of response is almost more disappointing than the miserable itching we endured for months!

“Private, Scenic, Perfect getaway in the Rainforest!”

The casita has a well-equipped kitchen and a comfortable bed in the loft. We were fortunate that Bret, the kind and friendly owner, was here for part of our month-long stay. He was extremely helpful and saw to it that our needs were met. Marvin, the gardner/caretaker, was delightful and we loved the many conversations that we shared despite the language barrier. Henry, the property manager, was terrific and immediately responsive when we needed him. We enjoyed the abundant fresh fruit and the many trails around the property. The trip into Nuevo arenal on a very bumpy Costan Rican road, was managable in our 4 wheel drive vehicle. Many great restaurants in this lovely town. The lake is beautiful and the location is close to adventures including beaches and the Monteverde Cloud Forest. We loved our vist and hope to return.

Response from the owner Thank you for your kind words and I am glad you enjoyed everything our property has to offer... you are welcomed back at any time. April 29, 2014 UPDATE --- the road repairs have begun... great news!!! The machines came to scrape and re-grade the bad spots and when they apply the new gravel and compaction it will be a breeze. What a welcomed sight and sound when we heard the machines working...
