“Quirky and fun”

Reviewed 10 Apr 2012

We stayed in the cottage shown on the right which from memory is referred to as Shepton Mallet. The house is anything but conventional and has some amazingly fun features to make your stay truly unforgettable. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves during our shortish stay and enjoyed Bellac and the surrounding countryside. We had super dinners at reasonable prices. The landlord is very friendly and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable. I can highly recommend this place!

“A house like no other”

Reviewed 15 Jun 2011

I had a wonderful holiday in Bellac. I have never stayed in a house like this; it is like living in a museum but without any pesky staff telling you not to touch anything! Bellac is a very nice, peaceful town and a perfect retreat for anyone wanting a break from the ratrace. The area is a cyclist/walker's heaven. I spent most of my time cycling around the many beautiful and empty country lanes and feel I have barely scratched the surface of what is on offer. Will definitely be back again soon!

“Wonderful, eccentric, unique!”

Reviewed 2 Jun 2011

Michael has created a minor masterpiece in Bellac merging eccentricity and comfort within a palpably ancient setting. The house combines artistic quirkiness with a wonderful truth to traditional materials. It is a testament to his conservation skills and understanding of old structures that Michael has brought the building truly alive rather than erradicating its character by forcing it to comply with C21st blandness. Bellac is small and functional but has all the right facilities and you will get to meet real French people rather than just tourists and ex-pats! There are plenty of worthwhile day trips to be had with Poitiers, Limoges and the lakes all within easy reach. The bats and swallows racing round the building every evening provide wonderful entertainment as the sun sets on a very special place. Don't come here if you're after the usual boring holiday rental - this is unique and all the better for that.

“unique”

A lovely holiday based in this central but quiet location, covenient to shops and restaurants etc. The house has been renovated to high spec reflecting the owners interest in conservation, but includes all modern facilities. A way to experience a true French medieval townhouse with original features.

“We've been twice now, as its totally charming, relaxing bliss!”

Reviewed 24 May 2011

This house is incredible, and the faithful restoration does not stop it being comfortable & warm, lighting the big fire is one of my favourite bits! The view of the aquaduct is lovely in the morning & you also get a good view of the tiny english bar down by the river. Watch out for local shop opening times, but there's even an emergency core of staple items there ready for you (tea, sugar, coffee etc). It really is lovely.

“Genuine rural Limousin”

Reviewed 2 May 2011

A beautifully and lovingly restored old house, full of antique furniture with modern quirky touches. Step out of the front door, and you're in the heart of a typical small French town with shops and bars just a few yards away. We spent hours sitting on the little terrace at the rear of the house gazing down the narrow valley with its elegant viaduct. On cooler evenings the woodburning stove provided a cosy focus. Lots of attractive little towns and villages to visit, and some great walks in the Monts de Blond. We'll definitely be returning.
