“cottage in the city”

Reviewed 1 Apr 2014

Very enjoyable and comfortable stay in the heart of one of Tampa Bay's Historic Districts. This three room bungalow cottage was a comfortable reminder of "home" with comfy Queen bed, a well stocked kitchen, and a sitting room complete with a fine selection of Dvd's, magazines, and other reading material. The neighbor hood is a delightful step back to the post depression when the bungalows were originally built, and these restored homes reflect the hard work of neighborhood home owners to bring back these unique dwellings to their historical past. Henry is a wonderful conversationalist and a helpful guide to the Tampa Bay area's tourist community.

Response from the owner Thanks so much for posting a review John, very kind and helpful to those search FlipKey, TripAdvisor. It appeared that you and your wife got in a morning constitutional walking the neighborhood everyday. Sorry to have missed saying goodbye, you were out REALLY early.

“Good alternative to hotel in Tampa”

Reviewed 12 Dec 2013

Henry Young's cottage is very comfortable, nicely furnished, and located in a pleasant older neighborhood that is open and authentic (unlike the gated communities that line the highways around Tampa). I stayed there to avoid spending huge amounts of money to stay at a downtown hotel near the Convention Center, where I was attending a conference. I took the bus back and forth, and found it fairly convenient, though it took some time. There is a Publix supermarket not far away, so you don't need to eat out all the time. The neighborhood where Erewhon Retreat is located is surrounded by busy highways with strip malls and auto dealerships, etc. I did not find it very appealing. But if you want to drive to one of the many parks in the region (Henry provides lots of maps and information), this is a good location to use as a base, and is very inexpensive. My only complaint about the cottage is that we weren't allowed to open the windows, and I really like fresh air. It was a time of year when the nights were cool, and it would have been nice to open some windows instead of having to use the aC.

Response from the owner The great thing about travel is broadening perspectives. Our guest coming from Ithaca, NY, with a city population 1/10 of Tampa and best known for being home to Cornell University would naturally find considerable surprise with the number of Interstate Highways. There is no question the main streets leading in and out of Tampa abutting our historic neighborhood are Florida, Nebraska and Hillsborough Avenues. What pleases all in the neighborhood is with the pace of historic restoration, our streets have been repaved, we are attracting many new and award winning restaurants, and new shops opening monthly. It may be another decade before Used Car lots vanish but new city zoning is making it easier for new small business to open and restoration is fast afoot. No guest has ever commented on noise from these streets. We do ask all guests not to open windows due to flying termites inhabiting our old growth trees. --

“A Charmed Life”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2013

My daughter and I spent two weeks in this charming little cottage in august 2013. It was perfect for the two of us and we couldn't have been more delighted with our stay. We enjoyed walking around the neighborhood to see the many restored arts and Crafts houses and there was even a Starbucks a couple of blocks away! This little house is a real gem and we had our very own "bungalow kitty", Thomas who came over to visit us each day. Thank you Henry, for creating this special little getaway.

Response from the owner Thrilled you enjoyed your stay. Thomas says MEOW.

“A restful haven in the middle of the city.”

We stayed for 2 weeks in March and found the cottage as everyone described. It is clean, stocked with all of the necessities and many extras. It was a pleasure to meet and visit with Henry during our stay. We would return on future trips but bought a home while we were here.

Response from the owner Happy to have you back for that second in June.

“First impression: beautiful”

Reviewed 18 Mar 2013

Myself and husband had a wonderful time there. It is more than what you see in the pictures. Fully stocked pantry. Very, very clean. Slept like a baby. Close to everything. Downtown and all the other places. Would stay there again, if and when go back to Florida. Home away from home.

Response from the owner Thanks Colin, very happy to see your affirmation as well as Naomi's. Enjoyed having you with us. Your home town got me thinking of our sail across all of Lake Ontario with many stops along the Ontario coastline. Hope to see you again.

“Wonderful Cottage”

Reviewed 31 Dec 2012

My father visited for Thanksgiving and stayed at the cottage, which is near my home in Tampa. The cottage was clean, comfortable and well appointed. The kitchen was both well equipped and spacious enough to have others over for a meal whether prepared on site or brought in. The outside space was nicely landscaped and peaceful. The location was great: easy access to major roads, close to downtown, near to shops, restaurants and great walking in the surrounding neighborhood. Henry made us feel very welcome and was extremely patient and accommodating while we sorted out arrival and departure dates! We thought it was an excellent value and would not hesitate in recommending this great cottage to friends and family! Thanks again for the memorable holiday weekend.

“Amazing Find”

Reviewed 24 Dec 2012

My husband and I wanted something different for lodging on this trip to Florida and we found it. The cottage is a small relaxing haven with all the amenities we needed, Dvds, large soft towels, travel guides, and free coffee. The kitchen include a cook top, microwave and a French press for morning coffee. We enjoyed a relaxing breakfast every morning while planning our day's activities. The bed was luxurious. The location is an old urban city neighbor with dog walkers, a local park and restaurants and easy access to the expressway to see all that Tampa has to offer. Henry provided tips on the best places to eat and we were not disappointed. I highly recommend this little cottage for a great getaway experience.

Response from the owner Thanks for taking the time to post Pat. Happy to have you and David spend your vacation with us. Bet there was quite the weather shock arriving back in Rochester after a week in the mid 70's. Special appreciation for posting a review on Christmas Eve.

“A great way to see Tampa”

Reviewed 19 Nov 2012

My wife and I went here for our honeymoon. Henry is a knowledgeable and gracious host. The house comes fully stocked and it's very cute and comfortable. The neighborhood has a lot of beautiful older houses that have been restored. It's located just off the 275 freeway so you have easy access to many places. Henry knows the city very well and gives great recommendations on things to do and places to eat. I'd say the place is great for couples or individual people who want to do something different, rather than staying in a boring hotel

Response from the owner Particularly appreciate your comments because you live in Pasadena just 6 blocks from the 1920 Bungalow I grew up in (1949-1953). Such a thrill and one in a million chance of living so close on the same street, and then prompting me to discover its still there.

My mom and I stayed for a week in the beginning of October! We walked into the house, incredible! The bed was super comfy! The kitchen and all the amenities were perfect, you didn't leave anything out, impressive!! The robes and slippers were a great way to end a day.. We had a incredible week! Our favorite beach was pass a grill! And the starbucks down the street was a bonus! Thanks so much we hope to be back!

Response from the owner So sorry my travel schedule didn't provide the opportunity to meet you and your mom, but pleased you found the cottage to your liking.

“Wonderful retreat!”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2012

Erehwon Retreat is a true gem in the center of the historic Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa. Owner Henry Young has captured the nostalgia of the 1920s bungalow lifestyle while providing the modern conveniences that we have come to expect in making our travels easy and enjoyable. I loved the dark roast coffee, French press, and breakfast items - very nice touch for those of us arriving late at night. A true home away from home, this immaculate cottage is cozy and gorgeous in every detail. The property is lush and quiet, but it is centrally located near restaurants, downtown, the local universities, area beaches, and other attractions. The beaches of West Coast Florida are a true treasure - and there are plenty of oversized beach towels to gently nudge you to Honeymoon Island, Captiva, or St. Pete Beach, my personal favorites. A quiet night in is also possible thanks to the cottage's full kitchen and modern appliances, eclectic collection of Dvds, free wifi, and a comfortable living room and front porch for relaxing. I hosted a small gathering of local friends during my visit and we were all quite comfortable mingling between the kitchen and living room with our snacks and wine (they were all equally impressed with the cottage). Best of all, Henry is not only a gracious host, but a wonderful conversationalist and valuable source of local information, no matter your interests. His cat Thomas (he doesn't come inside the cottage) is equally erudite. I give a strong recommendation to stay here whenever your travels take you to the Tampa Bay region and you are looking for something truly unique.

Response from the owner Too kind Jennifer, but do hope next trip here from San Diego, look forward to your return next.
