“BEWARE: House is not secure and no safe on location”

Reviewed 27 Jan 2015

Three couples rented this villa for 1 week through Remax Island Properties. When we arrived at the airport on Saturday afternoon we were escorted to the villa by Remax escort, Alice and "her teenage son". Her son sat in the living room as Alice showed us the villa, gave us the keys and how to use the prepaid ($5.00) phone. She indicated we could leave the patio doors open to enjoy the breeze and ocean sounds. The Villa was very clean and moderately stocked with kitchen and bath essentials. We got settled, ran to the grocery (Gran Marche) and enjoyed our Sat evening view from the villa. Sunday we relaxed at the villa while waiting for our luggage to arrive (which is another story). Our luggage was delivered at 5:00 pm and we got ready to go to dinner to celebrate a birthday. (The reason for our trip). We locked every door when we left and were gone for approx 4-5 hours. We returned to the villa to find the villa had been completely ransacked and all our valuables stolen. Phones, chargers, I Pads, Camera, lenses, e book, wireless speakers, prescription glasses, I pod and 1 couples luggage. The bedrooms had clothing strewn all over the floor. The police were called and came within reason. While we were waiting for the police we investigated how anyone got in the house for there was no broken lock or window. What we discovered was shocking. The 3 sliding glass doors in the great room lock on both sides BUT the whole middle section can be moved from inside and outside the house. Anyone can jump over the “security” gate and slide open the middle section of sliding glass doors and enter the house. We were NOT informed this house could not be secured and we were NOT informed we needed to put the hurricane shutters ALL down when leaving and at night. The architect came the next day and confirmed this fact and indicated the doors were cheap and indeed could not be secured as is. The detective returned on Monday to write up reports and also went through the house indicating there had been a break in about a year ago. We contacted Remax properties promptly Monday morning. They showed NO concern - they did not send anyone to the house and said it was not their responsibility but the owner had a responsibility to secure the house. After arguing with them they offered to refund the rest of the week if we left Monday. (And where were we going to go?). They sent Paul (which had no authority to make decisions) to show us a couple more villas we could move to (of lesser value and up in the hilltops clear across the island). We decided to stay at El Sueno, making sure to close the hurricane shutters at all times we were not there. After all they already stole all our stuff. It took 2 days to add money to the pre pay phone for we had to use it to handle affairs of the break in. We wasted 2 days and the rest of the week was not a comfortable stay. There were workers every day working on the new boardwalk to the ocean (just a gateway to another break in, in our opinion) which we were also not informed of. One day we were without water for 2 hours for they broke a pipe. The owner was out of town while we were there and the housekeeper, Annie, does live next door. We were told the house would be cleaned 3 times but only 1 time did anyone come in to replenish and we would have to contact Annie for paper towels, toilet paper and wash cloths. There is not an accessible washer machine in the villa, it is at the owners villa next door. There is only 1 TV in the villa located in the great room. Highly recommend additional TVs in the bedrooms. This was the start to our 14 day vacation in St Maarten. The second week we had booked at a Villa on Great Bay which was a much more pleasant experience. We stopped at Remax during our second week to discuss but got no where. Remax and several other agencies represent the villa and should NOT be listing and renting this property until all the security concerns have been met. The architect did come with a security person to review what changes should be done but we have no idea when/if the changes will be done. Bottom line is we paid good money for this "luxury" oceanfront villa and feel very strongly we were NOT informed properly what measures need to be taken for the safety and security of the guests that rent this place. Its really a shame for the location has an excellent view and modern updates. It does require walking on a busy street to access Front Street and/or the beach or renting a car. There is a couple grocery/general stores within a half mile or so but require walking the busy street. The larger grocery store will require a car/taxi ride. It was windy every day so we did not enjoy the pool. We will not be renting through this company again should we come back to the island and even that is questionable at present.
