“Great vacation!”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2012

I really enjoyed the cottage very clean, beautiful view from the dock! Great area, Only negative thing to say is the path down to the dock was dangerous and steep ended up spraining my ankle!

“Cozy, clean cottage in a lovely escarpment setting.”

Reviewed 11 Sep 2012

The cottage was very comfortable, with good beds, and usable kitchen. It had a real cottage feel, not just a regular house plopped in a northern setting. The pathway down to the lake was beautiful. We loved the huge escarpment rocks, ferns and birch trees along the way. The water was quite clear and had an aqua look to it. The canoe was fun for my kids and husband to go out fishing in daily. Three good sized bass were caught too, but got away when we got them to the surface!! The downside of this cottage would be the state of the dock and steps leading down to the water. One side of the dock was taking on water and so it was leaning. As well, the wood was in bad shape and there were a lot of nails sticking out, ready to stub toes on. The bit between the dock and the stairs leading up to the cottage was difficult to navigate with loose dirt and rock. Overall, were were quite happy with our week at this cottage.

“When I build a cottage, it will be like this.”

Bass lake is quiet and pretty. The cottage is stunning, well built and so comfy. The rocky shoreline is amazing. Hiking the Bruce trail was a great workout and very relaxing. Perfect site for curling up indoors with a book, roasting a marshmallow by the campfire or jumping off the dock into the lake. Would not hesitate to book this cottage again.

“This cottage at Bass Lake was peaceful!”

The cottage is pretty secluded from the world which was relaxing. The path down to the dock/lake was an extremely interesting hike and the view from the dock was beautiful with full sun from sun up until sun down!

“Nice area”

Reviewed 29 Oct 2009

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We thought we were just going to read, canoe and sit on the dock for 2 weeks, but there was so much to see and do in the area. Gorgeous waterfalls, scenic bluffs, lots of great trails, farmer's markets galore, artisans,etc...The cottage was very nice, tidy and clean. The bed was extremely soft but everyone has different taste. The kitchen was well stocked with implements, pans, etc. We bbq'd every night. We loved hand-feeding chickadees on the porch. Saw a porcupine on the driveway one night (luckily we saw him before Zoe, our dog, did) and also a flying squirrel flung himself at the window one night...very cute. The walk down to the dock is beautiful through the fern-covered rocks..it felt almost prehistoric. We didn't find out til we arrived that the canoe is "very tippy and has a small leak"...I wish they'd mentioned that because we would have brought our own in that case. Maybe it's fine, we didn't try it because our dog likes to move around a lot in the canoe :o) We'd assumed that such a small lake wouldn't allow motorized crafts...but we were wrong. Over Labour Day weekend especially it was quite noisy with water skiiers, tubing, etc. It also made the dock rock and roll which wasn't really relaxing. That's fine...people are entitled to enjoy their vacation. During the week it was fairly quiet. Overall, we would highly recommend this cottage. Very comfortable and enjoyable.

“Quiet and Quaint”

Reviewed 5 Feb 2009

Cottage was clean and quite homey. We found the beds to be on the hard side and could use new matresses. Lake is very clean ... didn't have a lot of luck with the fishing though. We found the location to be too remote for our liking and not enough sun exposure. We enjoyed the firepit at night.

“Cottage 473”

Reviewed 28 Jan 2009

My girlfriend and I rented the cottage for a week. We hiked the Bruce Trail every day, but were still close enough to the city to drive in for a pizza. The trail from the cottage to the lake is a beautiful feature. The lake was warm even in late September, and aside from the tail end of hurricane Ivan the first weekend, the weather was great. The woodstove heated the entire cottage, and the bedrooms were still cool enough for sleeping. Everything worked perfectly and the cottage was in excellent condition. One caveat - watch out for the folding chairs by the lake, unless you want to go in the water backwards. carry the plastic chairs down from the deck for a much more secure seating experience.

Response from the manager Owner Response: We are really glad you enjoyed our cottage. Thanks for the tip on the folding chairs by the lake ? we replaced the folding chairs with comfortable Adirondack chairs ? great for reading or lounging by the lake.

“Rustic cottage”

Reviewed 24 Jan 2009

The property was exactly as described by the cottage rental agency. It is on a quiet, narrow lake. The only entry to the lake is off the dock and is probably at least 15 feet deep so I wouldn't recommend this cottage to people with young children. It's close Wiarton and Owen Sound. It's very private but due to all the trees screening the property you can't really sit outside because of the bugs and you can't see the lake from the cottage. The descent to the lake is rather steep so I wouldn't recommend this cottage to people with mobility issues. There is no TV so you need to take that into account too. We had a wonderful week but you should take into account that this rental is only for you if you are active and are looking to rough it a little. Beautiful - thanks for sharing your home with us.

“lake was great for canoeing and swimming”

Reviewed 24 Jan 2009

Beautiful setting, private and clean. Enjoyed the little hike to the dock; where we spent hours sunning and swimming. Thanks to the owners' biking route booklet, we had many enjoyable hours touring the area. The only issues we had with the cottage were the uncomfortably hard bed and the poor condition of the barbeque. We would definitley rent this cottage again, but I would bring along an air mattress!

Response from the manager Very glad you enjoyed our cottage at Bass Lake. We have replaced the double mattress in one of the bedrooms with a brand new full queen sized bed ? much better for a great night?s sleep. We also bought a new barbeque ? sorry for the poor condition of the old one. Thanks for your comments ? and we hope you will enjoy Bass Lake cottage again.
