“beach ouse ok, but with sig. problems”
overall, ok - but two major, major problems that I have called mgr. Patrick about and have yet to receive a return call: - loose boards and nails on the deck (very hazardous) - a toilet leak that wasn't fixed until mid-week
“Halcyon Was a Nice End-of-Summer Break”
The house's location and amenities were great for a group of 8. The only complaints we had were a general lack of cleanliness in the bathrooms and some broken screens and broken chairs, which gave it a bit of a rundown feel. The stove in the kitchen only has one working burner, so be prepared for grilling! The OBB team did their best to work with us to improve it, and the house was otherwise an absolute pleasure and convenient. But if we'd been paying high-season rates, it would have been extremely disappointing. As a note for those of you taking advantage of the 4x4-only driving north of Corolla, after October 1 we were able to drive on the beaches in Whalehead as well - a demonstrable plus. Finally the hot tub was an excellent spot to watch the sun set.
Halycon was a beautiful home in a great location. The floors had not been vacuumed and it was obvious that the previous guests had a pet. The kitchen floor had not been cleaned. My sister in law is an asthmatic and was starting to feel ill. In looking around their room, there was a painting/picture hanging on the wall that had moisture on the back and was covered in mold. We put the painting outside and bleached the wall. There were huge spiders all over the deck that found their way into the pool. Also, I believe that the pool had a pretty bad leak as it was losing about 2 inches of water per day.
“Our first time in Outer Banks was wonderful”
The location of this house is terrific with a spectacular view of the ocean and a very short walk to the beach. The pool and the hot tub were great. However the grill was a disgrace and the stove top did not work. Could only use one burner at a time. The kitchen utensils and cooking pots all need to be replaced. There were not enough forks for all 11 of us to use at one time. It was nice to have the gazebo and the pool room and the lovely adirondack chairs and the hammock on the decks. We could not get in on time because the cleaners were still there, but the keyless entry was very nice.
“We throughly enjoyed our time in the Outer Banks!”
I rate the Halcyon 'Very Good' ... because of location, price, pool, and hot tub. You walk down the street 3-4 houses to the beach access. We loved the nice-sized pool and hot tub. We rented bikes and a kayak ahead of time, and they were at the Halcyon upon our arrival. The area is great for families … not much car traffic … so riding bikes was not nerve-racking. You can see the dunes and the ocean from the top deck (between the houses across the street). The Halcyon is not elaborate inside (up to date) but suitable for our family. There were deflated/dirty left-behind pool tubes/toys around the pool area, and a couple of the pool chairs were broken. We were a little disappointed but cleaned this up ourselves and moved on. The inside of was cleaned nicely. The beds were not extra comfortable, but they weren’t the worst either! Don't count on a gas grill .. it's gross (unless they replaced it). There were nails, yes nails, around the property. We tried to pick them up but am sure we missed some … I stepped on one on the 1st story deck outside one of the bedrooms. If minor fixups/updates were done around the property, it would be rated "excellent." Next time I would take my own blankets / lightweight comforters, my own frying pan, and some rafts/tubes for the pool.
Nice quiet area with view of ocean. House was adequate for our group but bottom floor game area essentially useless due to damp, musty conditions. Very nice pool and hot tub. Rental company reacted quickly to broken dishwasher.
“Unit needs to be updated.”
The location of this unit is great. Excellent view through a vacant property of the ocean and a short distance to the beach. This is our second year at Halcyon. We found that the carpets in the main living area were severely stained. We reported this the first day so the blame would not be on us. The kitchen sink faucet had a major leak and had to be completely replaced by the second day of our stay. Receptacles had no childproofing and we had a 1yr old and 2yr old in our party. Several outside lights by the pool have not been working for two years now. Upon arrival, the pool company had not taken down the unsafe to use pool sign. In addition, the entire unit needs painting interior and exterior trim. Nails on all outside decks need to be hammered. I think the maintenance inspector should catch these types of concerns. The weather was great and the entire family still had an enjoyable vacation. We are already talking about upgrading to another unit for next year.
Response from the manager T1, Thanks for taking time to give us your feedback. I'm glad to hear we were able to rectify your immediate complaints in a timely manner during your stay, these longer term issues need to be addressed by the owner. We will be sure your comments are passed along to the owner for action. All the best from the beach!
“Great Family Vacation place”
Great place to stay. Just minutes walk from beach and could see a good view of horizon from the deck.Loved pool and other amenities though the only suggestion I have is to have a small mesh to cover the pool so the dirt and insects won't get there.
“Not so Hot. Badly in Need of Maintenance. Sorry. :(”
Dear owner: Your home is badly in need of maintenance and remodeling. Even at the prices we paid for September, it was too high for the value. I'm sorry to report this and really wish the best for you. If I were to offer recommendations, first it would be simple maintenance. We could not use our screen door on the second floor master bedroom. The handle was missing. We could not open the windows in the bedroom, the screens were loose and one of the windows would not remain open. Screens on the second and top floors were torn and hanging. Some were completely off the windows and just sitting on the deck. The door in the living room could not be left open because the screen is torn and we were afraid our small dogs would escape. The bathroom toilet in the master bath on second floor has a huge crack all the way across the seat that someone repaired by gluing. Toilet seats don't cost much to replace. The shower in the master bath, 2nd floor was in need of re-grouting and was badly stained with mold. I used the shower in the bedroom toward the back of the house, 2nd floor and the door would not close completely and leaked water all over the floor. The walls were flimsy and every time I opened it, I worried that they might break away from the main wall or fall down. There are two leaks in the ceiling of the master bedroom on the top floor. They were particularly noticeable during the storm. The grill would not light on its own and has seen better days. The kitchen is badly in need of upgrading. It appears so dingy. The pink carpet is stained. The wall near the front door needs repair and the bracket on the front door that holds the outer door is broken. The décor and the bed coverings are terribly dated. And, the television was only operable half of the time. We called twice for repairs. I’m sorry to say we were very disappointed in the condition of the home.
Response from the manager Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts regarding this property. We are certainly sorry to see your discontent with "Halcyon." It is my understanding that we did respond to your call regarding some of the things outlined in your message, but unfortunately our maintenance staff was turned away when they arrived to rectify some of these items. We have followed up on these items now and we will be sure that the owner of the home does know your feelings. We look forward to serving you again soon! All the best from the beach!
We paid for early check and when we arrived the cleaning crew just started to clean. We were told it would be an hour. I called the office and complained to Sarah. Sarah said she would contact some type of manager and get right back to me. The cleaning manager arrive about five minutes after my conversation with Sarah, which by the way she did not call back. We checked in twenty minutes late. The house needs some work. There was a broken toilet seat, broken or missing screens, broken door frame/jam, mold in the showers, door handle on one screen door, broken glass on table, stain and smelly carpet, handle broken on the pantry door, toilet on third floor was hard to flush (had to use the plunger which was convenient beside the toilet) and combo lock did not work (most of the time). Finally, the repair fellow arrive unannounced at the time our baby was a sleep and wanted to do some of the repairs. It would have been nice to receive a phone call to set a time when it was convenient for us. The weather was nice and the ocean view was great. I am planning a large outing of 20+ people over the summer of 2009 and I'm not so sure I will use your company again. I feel a bit deceived by your brochure and the response to me needs.
