Very Good

“A great vacation experience”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2016

This condo unit had everything we needed for a complete extended family vacation. Clean with all appliances in good repair, comfortable living space, good wifi (but horrible cellphone range) beautiful ocean view, nice covered deck space, community pool access in pleasant surroundings, jacuzzi, and grills available. Beautifully landscaped property with live oaks and other natural features. Carts available on standby to unload your car with a convenient elevator for upper floors. Good value for the location and the accommodations. Set up umbrellas and chairs for the beach through local beach service (well worth it), and rented bicycles to add to our experience (ride a mile down the beach (at low tide) to the Pavilion and treat everyone to a heaping ice cream cone at Duney's Ice Cream shop). The property management was always available by phone if we needed them (didn't really), but we felt like the condo was exclusively ours the whole time we were there. I won't deduct my 5-star rating for the property by noting some other details that are no fault of the property owner, but... I had to memorize three combinations for the stay- one for the gate, one for the pool, and one for the bike cable. There is no handicap access to the beach, which means negotiating steps, so taking anything to the beach on wheels requires some lifting for both the sidewalk and the boardwalk. Groceries, if you need them, are virtually unavailable anywhere in the Wild Dunes property area, except for a minuscule representation at Hudson's market, and your closest restock location is Harris Teeter, about 5 miles south. A couple of good places to grab a bite to eat without having to prepare it yourself include Coastal Provisions at the Grand Pavilion for lunch, and Morgan Creek Grill down at the marina for dinner with a view. Leave the property and a fun place is Coconut Joe's in Isle of Palms village, and any kind of restaurant you desire can be found in the Mt. Pleasant area. And finally, the beach experience itself is based at a unique location on the end of Isle of Palms, which means a little more solitude from the rest of the island, but there is a serious beach erosion issue, which has resulted in the sister condo complex next door literally having a corner sticking out into the ocean at high tide, blocking beach access to the south and obstructing the view of everything southward. An interesting line of sandbars becomes visible and accessible at low tide, where recent storms deposited much of the former beach, but which becomes a treacherous experience if one waits too long to come back to shore. Fierce riptides are common just off the shoreline, and it is absolutely imperative to supervise children in the water. While there are other locations in South Carolina and Georgia that offer similar experiences, we like the Isle of Palms area because of the variety of experiences available, including the various activities available in Charleston. Coming from the Atlanta area, it is our most common beach destination. If your main priority is a beautiful beach and turquoise surf, you'd better look to the gulf coast of Florida, but the overall experience if balanced and fulfilling.
