We truly enjoyed our stay in San Juan Puerto Rico! we chose this vacation condo rental and it was perfect. it was clean comfortable felt like home and perfectly located in between Old San Juan and Condado. Martin helped us to get settled in comfortably. We were able to buy groceries from a grocery store 1 block away and enjoyed grilling salmon and jerk bbq chicken on the rooftop deck. There are plenty of restaurants in the neighborhood in addition to venturing out into Old San Juan to appreciate the old world charm, eating authentic PR cuisine, sightseeing at San Juan Historical Site (Castillo San Felipe del Morro) or just having a great time at Escambron beach, or going into Condado for more beach, restaurants and fun. We highly recommend this vacation condo rental. We will be definitely returning to San Juan in the near future, this is the perfect location to enjoy.
“Somewhere between thrifty and luxurious.”
I booked this place for my honeymoon; chosen based on price, proximity to the beach, and kitchen availability. This was our first experience with a vacation rental, so I wasn't sure what to expect. When we arrived, I was able to text Martin, informing him of our arrival, and he promptly replied that he was waiting for us at the place. Our $20 cab ride got us to the rental, and first impressions began setting in. The neighborhood is far from touristy. The building itself is sort of run-down looking, I think mainly attributed to the cruddy metal gate at the entrance. If I were Gary/Martin, I'd update that gate for two reasons: "curb appeal," and functionality- the lock was really inconsistent and hard to operate. Martin let us know that there was a grocery store open until 5pm just 2 small blocks away, so we went to stock up on some groceries. Unfortunately for the renters, first impressions weren't improved as we walked through a fairly lackluster neighborhood (Puerta de Tierra, for those of you looking it up) to the store. I'm from Chicago, so I have little issue and much understanding with the welfare state that springs from a 10% unemployment rate, but with that being said, I was on vacation and wanted to feel safe and pampered by my surroundings. This neighborhood did neither. Regardless, we got our groceries and returned home. This is when the pit of our first impression set in - a sizable drug bust just down the hill on our street... cops chasing crooks, maybe 5 police cars lit up, and bystanders watching intently. Nothing bad happened, but again, a pretty awful first view of the neighborhood. We however, weren't about to let that define our trip... The inside of the condo was nice. Simple, effective, and spacious enough to not feel trapped. Wasn't a big fan of the couch. It didn't stay "put together" as the cushions slid off with any bit of slouch. It wouldn't be good for sleeping, it was hard enough relaxing on the thing. An improvement that I would consider making if I owned the place. The air-conditioning was great... very cold, and a delightful contrast from the sweltering heat outside. The kitchen/appliances were beautiful, and we were glad to have access to them after incurring several $50-75 dinner bills. (Gary, you guys need some normal sized spoons in your silverware drawer!) The wi-fi wasn't what we were hoping for. Incredibly slow DL/UL speeds... I know what you're thinking, "we're not going on vacation to spend time on the internet!" That wasn't our plan, either. But Verizon and US Cellular don't offer roaming-free service, so every time we wanted to search for attractions, restaurants, or look at a map, we'd have to wait 30 seconds for a page to load using their wi-fi. We definitely wasted more time waiting for things to load than we would've had the internet been an average speed. A low cost improvement that should be highly considered by management. The bed was comfortable enough. Springy, but didn't leave me sore or anything so it did the job. Would've been nice to lay down on a high-end king size mattress or something, but beggars can't be choosers :). There was nice closet space and a dresser that served our clothes well. The bathroom is aesthetically pleasing. The washer and dryer units were really nice for getting a couple loads of laundry done. The shower is sleek looking, however the water temperature caused a lot of problems. There was seemingly no way to truly control the shower temperature, so we spent several minutes each shower tinkering with the faucet handle in hopes to locate the ideal warmth. This resulted in many moments of scalding hot or ice cold water during our showers... I would have Martin look into this - it could very well be due to the infrastructure of the place, but could possibly be as simple as getting a new faucet handle. The proximity to the beach was nice, and Escambrón was a great place to relax and swim. Other than that, there wasn't much to offer within 15-20 minutes walking, which was okay because we wanted to spend a lot of time in Old San Juan and El Condado anyway, which were about 20 minutes walking in either direction. In short, bring your walking shoes - cabs are expensive and the bus system seems like a secondary option. I'm not going to review the city itself because you've probably already done that if you're looking to rent here! Aside from the our first impression and the few new-rental kinks that need to be worked out by management, this was a very nice stay. I would recommend it to young people first, followed by anybody who wants something other than a boring tiny-box hotel stay. If I'm Gary, I start marketing the place just like that until the gentrification of the neighborhood overcomes its rough-around-the-edges history. Thanks for the stay, Gary and Martin!
“Great apartment, excellent location!”
I had the pleasure of staying in both the upper one bedroom and the lower two bedroom apartment during my stay. Martin was most helpful and was available by phone to assist me in any way necessary. The location is excellent as the building is located a six minute drive from both Old San Juan and the Condado Beach area. The apartments were clean and had beautiful finishes. It was wonderful to have a new washer and dryer for laundry in both units. The internet and cable worked well. Laundry machines and internet are big advantages, as most hotels in the area do not have these amenities. The kitchens were well equipped. Parking was always available in front of the building and was free. The view from the rooftop terrace in the one bedroom apartment was wonderful, as the building is located only one block from the ocean. The air conditioning worked very well and was quiet. The beds were comfortable. I highly recommend both units to travelers to San Juan. I plan to stay once again here on future travels to Puerto Rico
My wife and I recently stayed in this one bedroom condo located on the outskirts of Old San Juan. We arrived about an hour and a half later than expected due to a delay with our flight. Martin, the caretaker, went out of his way to make us feel at home. The apartment was nicely furnished, comfortable and as advertised close to the beach. There are a number of restaurants nearby including a popular hamburger place, Mexican, Chinese and of course Puerto Rican cuisine. We found the location was perfect for getting into and out of the Old City without getting into a traffic jam. Martin was very helpful with getting us hooked up to the wireless internet system and was always available to answer questions or to give directions. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone that wanted to be centrally located to Old San Juan and still wanted to be near the beach. Playa Escambron was a great place to hang out.
