“This house was, without a doubt, the perfect family vacation home, even for our large family of 8.”

Reviewed 18 Feb 2017

The Ohana house at Volcano was an absolutely perfect match for our family and our 5 day stay on the Big Island. We came focused on exploring the east side of the Big Island and had a great time rambling around the Volcanos Nat'l Park and exploring Hilo and Honokaa. The house was very family-friendly, and included plenty of little kid-essentials like a high-chair and a playpen, very much appreciated by our 3-year old. The main room (shown in the primary photo) was great place for our three generations to hang out and converse. The altitude (~3500 ft) ensured that the evenings were cool and helped everyone relax after hiking and exploring. The kitchen was perfectly sized to support the mutual entertaining that the four families did. The location for exploring the National Park could not be better, and we spent three days there. The fact that the volcano was erupting both into the sea as well as at the summit was a bonus! In summary, we had a great time in every aspect of our visit, and would highly recommend this house for anyone who wants to explore the eastern side of the Big Island.

Response from the owner Thanks for the great review. I'm so glad your family had a wonderful Big Island holiday, and that the Ohana House was a good fit. Hope you'll return someday. Mahalo!

“Great place to stay!”

Reviewed 14 Apr 2015

We had an AMAZING time in the Ohana house! We stayed there for 3 nights. The house was very cozy and comfortable, bathrooms and bedrooms were super clean, same for the kitchen. We really really enjoyed our time there. It's very close to the Volcano park so we did several hikes and we were amazed by all the different landscapes we saw. Because the house is so close to the park, we came back one night to see the Kilauea crater at dark, it was amazing. Not to mention that the owner Becky is very nice and very friendly, and very efficient to reply which is a plus! We would definitely recommand the place to our friends.

“Wonderful home away from home! Very comfortable and convenient!”

Reviewed 21 Jan 2015

We loved the home! It had just about anything you needed, a kitchen well supplied with cookware and utensils, dishes, glasses, etc. The home should be listed as a 4/2 because the loft, roomy with twin beds is really very private. The yard is very private and quiet. We were only 4 miles from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, so it is easy to hike and enjoy the park, with only a short ride home at night, or enjoy seeing the glowing caldera at night against the dark sky, a site to see, again without having to drive very far to get "home". We appreciated the motion-detector lights when arriving after dark. The fireplace was a great asset for those cooler mornings or evenings. The house has everything! And the maintenance was superb. They even left some basic supplies to help get started for the first morning with coffee, tea, hot cereal, pancake mix... Very nice touch! Owners were great to work with, sharing lots of great information.

“Despite experiencing a hurricane, it was an exceptional rental.”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2014

The property was well maintained and clean but more importantly, it was quite comfortable and accomodated all of our party. The grounds were well maintained and it was quiet and very relaxing. The one thing that sticks out were the little things I haven't experienced in other rentals. (e.g. a toothbrush holder, a wok to cook with, etc.). The owners were a joy to work with and were very accomodating. As mentioned, while we were there, we experienced an earthquake (granted on the other side of the island), a tropical storm and a hurricane. We all felt safe in the house despite the winds and rains and the owners had the caretaker check in on us when she couldn't get in touch (phone services was knocked out). I really felt that they cared about our having a positive experience. All in all, the house, the property and the owners made this vacation one of the best ever!

“Delightful”

a lovely home tucked away amid giant ferns and fragrant ginger. We only wish we could have stayed longer!

“Perfect in every way”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2013

We stayed for three nights, a family of four, at this beautiful house. It was secluded and quiet, and so easy to go to Volcano National Park, which we did day and night! The house is spacious and well heated and includes everything you need for a relaxing stay. i was working during our stay and could connect instantly to the internet and never had trouble from any room in the house. The on-site manager Renee helped us solve the fireplace problem the first day (battery problem for the base of the remote control). We cooked meals, took hot showers, slept like babies. The view of the huge ferns from the dining room is gorgeous. I highly recommend this wonderful place!

“Awesome”

The house was so handy to Volcano National Park. The house was very very clean and so toasty warm. We all recommend it highly! Fun toys for kids. The owner is so friendly and welcoming. Great place.

“Wow, what a treat!”

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Ohana House - it really felt comfortable. So well stocked and so beautiful to come home to. My kids enjoyed having their space in the loft, and we all loved sitting in the living room gazing out at the rainforest. It's really close to the park - and we loved the Thai Thai restaurant and the Kilauea Lodge in the village. Renee the housekeeper was a big help when we needed to drop our bags early. Altogether a perfect stay - much nicer facility than our other vacation rental over in Kona!

“The perfect rain forest retreat”

Reviewed 5 Jan 2013

The Ohana House is a little gem! After a long flight from australia and four days of touristic madness on Oahu it was a sheer relief to drive down the long drive and find our little 'cottage in the rain forest' waiting for us. It was immaculately clean and well presented and amply equipped with all that the weary traveller could possibly require, including four large bedrooms, two bathrooms (each with a hair dryer) a well stocked pantry, a fridge, washing machine and dryer and a vey helpful printed and illustrated Guidebook produced by the owner which explains in great detail all that you need to know about what to see and where to go on the Big Island generally and in and around Volcano in particular. We spent four idyllic days exploring the rain forest, the volcano and the surrounding coastline. We found the Ohana House to be an ideal base for hiking and trekking in the rain forest and the various restaurants in the nearby village of Volcano were all very welcoming to hungry hikers at the end of a long day and provided an interesting and varied range of fare. Overall the experience of staying in the Ohana House was better by far than anything we could possibly have hoped for and we will forever hold fond memories of our time there. We strongly recommend it to travellers and adventurers of all ages!

“Fantastic Home away from Home near Volcano National Park”

Reviewed 3 Apr 2012

My wife and three children (8,6,2) just returned from our stay at Ohana House and it was more impressive than advertised. The attention to detail was incredible. The owners have great taste! The location is the absolute best for being near Volcano National Park. Would recommend everyone to stay at Ohana House if you are in the area.
