“It is a dream spot !”
This place is just unforgettable ! The house, the property, the river, the boss of the house - Smooki and her human parents - everything and everyone was beyond any expectations. The property is so nice that you can spend entire day there without any regret...We saw so many different butterflies on a pebble beach by the river ! The location is great, so much to see around. The cheese place nearby is excellent, the chocolate place - make sure you try their chocolates. The aquas Termales are great, but somewhat far (in this climate) and steep to walk to, it is not a 1/2 hour walk unfortunately...The Cloudbridge preserve is a must to explore ! It is better to have a 4x4 vehicle, otherwise it is more expensive to hire a driver. Note: the housekeeper Oldemar is willing to help with the local rides. The local bus runs, but I believe only couple times a day - a typical rural bus schedule. Bottom line - best to have a good dependable vehicle here. ...The roads to the paradise are not meant to be easy...
“Fall in love with this place like I did!”
The house is beautifully constructed, comfortable and cozy. During my 10 days stay I especially enjoyed the thoughtfully designed kitchen and the spacious balcony overlooking the garden, the river and the jungle. Located close to the road, but very peaceful, apart for the sounds of the surrounding garden and the virgin rainforest just across the Chirripó river. You have private access to the riverbank, where you can relax on the beautiful big rocks. We went swimming in the natural "swimming pool", since the stream was not to strong. Fish were jumping high up the little waterfalls, and the air tastes like paradise. In the evening it cools down for a good night's sleep. All round, it´s the most relaxing spot if you are into nature. Good infrastructure, even if most guests seem to have a car, you could make without. There is a regular bus to San Isidro, a little pulperia just 5 Minutes walk from the house and a farm where local cheese is made, which is a nice change from the cheese you get in the supermarket. A slightly longer walk to the "Hard Rock Café" restaurant, that features freshly caught trout on the menu. The "Aguas Thermales" are beautiful and relaxing and approximately a 30 minute walk from the house. Yoga classes are often held nearby at the 'Rio Chirripó' Retreat. Don´t miss the good food on the way to San Isidro: Antojos de Maiz, 50mts. Sur de la entrada a Miravelles, La Bonita de Rivas, camino al Chirripó.
“Costa Rica Mountain Solitude”
The house is Canaan was great; it may have been the best part of our trip to Costa Rica! Forget the beach, if you want some real relaxation, venture off the beaten path and spend some time in a hammock by a roaring river, which is just steps from the house. We had total seclusion if we wanted it, and angus and Tania were great guides and company when we wanted to see the sights. If you want to stay in an awesome house, with the best "sound machine" imaginable, avoid tourists, and get away from it all, I highly recommend this place!
“Best vacation house!”
Angus is extremely generous, attentive to details and has an over-all energy that exudes humility! Although he was traveling he offered us immediate responses to our questions and his welcome note was very thoughtful. "Kubla Khan"-in one word is- impresionante! A home away from home-prime location-super comfy beds, both balconies over look your own, private river-do a bit of yoga or enjoy some local, organic coffee, as the day kicks in...the layout of la casa is very unique-cook, listen to music, BBQ, watch birds and butterflies (fireflies at night) a bit of futbol, or simply embrace the roaring Rio Chirripo. The garden is plentiful-flora and fauna galore-fresh oranges, not to mention the shower is extraordinary (gracias Tania for the sweet garden view and lovely flower arrangement) Local digs: catch your own trout at La Truchera (Amable and Gonzalez are awesome), Tao's Samaritin Chocolate, Las aguas Thermales and the local Queso mujer, Catya. Angus and Tania-this place is a true gem, thank you for sharing, and we look forward to crossing paths again...suerte!
Kubla Khan. Where to begin, our jaws dropped as we stepped onto the grounds. Our energy lifted and the dream began. Everywhere you look, lush vegetation, fruit trees, a garden, and of course the magnificent roaring river. Stepping into the house, we were awed by the open concept and breathtaking views. A gorgeous bathroom, excellent kitchen and a heavenly bedroom. Truly divine! The best part of our trip was Miss Smooki, the kitty. What a character!!! Everyday we enjoyed sunbathing, cat naps, cooking and playing all around the property. She created a really fun environment for us, and we miss her already. Angus and Tania, we are so thankful to have had the opportunity to stay in your magical palace. Pura Vida. Namastè. Arigato! X
“Amazing relaxing vacation”
Our family has been in Costa Rica many times, this was our first time at Chirripo Mountains. The mountain is unbelievably beautiful and the weather very pleasant. The Chirripo mountain retreat is in a great location with a spectacular river and mountain view. The house is very comfortable, the glass and wood construction provides great natural lighting. The owners were very attentive to our family needs and went out of their ways to make our vacation special. We highly recommend and hope to be back soon.
“Our Favorite Place We've Ever Been!”
This was absolutely one of the most amazing places we've ever stayed - in any country! The house and the property are absolutely stunning (the pictures do it no justice) and the town is very charming. Angus was very helpful and informative on where to go and what to do - my only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. We will definitely be staying at Kubla Khan again as soon as possible!
“Breathtakingly Beautiful & Relaxing”
We could not be happier with our choice to stay at Chirripó Mountain Retreat. Angus and Tania have made it a wonderful home -- comfortably, but simply, furnished with all the basics, as well as some custom upscale touches for extra "awe factor." It is obvious the care and pride they have for the house and the land. Upon arrival, Angus had printed information about the house and local contacts, and included several pages of "interesting things to do" along with a very clear hand-drawn map for the area. This information was very helpful -- we used it daily as we explored the valley. We took advantage of the fresh vegetables, herbs and oranges from the gardens almost everyday, and made it down to the swimming hole several afternoons to cool off. There were many beautiful birds, moths and butterflies literally "a few meters" off the deck. And we were fortunate enough to see a group of spider monkeys in the canopy straight across the river. We met several neighbors in the nearby villages or down at the river, and everyone had very high regard for angus and Tania. Chirripó Mountain Retreat definitely is on our list of favorite places, and we have no doubt that we will return soon. Thank you, Angus and Tania!
