“Charming Casita”

Reviewed 29 Apr 2014

A short bus or taxi ride from Oaxaca city, this 2 br house in San Felipe del agua, at the base of the mountains, is an excellent location for a couple or small family (we were 4 adults and one child.) Small stores and a thrice weekly mercado are in walking distance, as is the bus stop, there is a lovely church, and a swimming pool is available (and desirable during the hot months!) Our host, Sergio, was there to greet us, kindly provided coffee and a few essentials for our first morning, and drove us to a nearby restaurant for our first breakfast. Mayra, who cleans the house weekly, was very helpful, especially when we had a problem with the gate lock. Everything worked well in the house otherwise; we usually had meals outside on the patio if not dining in town. The village atmosphere was a welcome respite after touring the valley or visiting downtown. An excellent Spanish school is also a 20 minute walk away, and we took lessons twice. We eventually got used to the roosters, dogs and firecrackers (but bring those earplugs anyway!) My sister even missed the night sounds after she went home. It is very easy to communicate with the owners or their neighbor. We enjoyed the artwork in the house, and a boom box was available-we found a good Mexican music channel. The only real problems we encountered were the gate lock (resolved) and the difficulty of finding the return bus routes in town due to 'bloqueos.' Other than that, we had a great time and would recommend the house to anyone who wants to experience Oaxaca.

“the magic of oaxaca”

A restful 10 day stay in February. Spacious house, small garden, but delightful pool next door. Local market only a five minute walk. We were about 15 minutes out of town - in San Felipe de agua - but there was a 6 peso local bus ride only a few minutes from the house. The town of oaxaca is full of exciting food, shops, museums. We could have stayed longer. Only drawback is no local restaurants close to the house.

Response from the owner Thank you for your review. As you know we were unfortunately on a year's sabbatical and missed seeing you. I only know now that somehow our information sheet which we have at the house did not come to your attention as there is a list of nearby restaurants which are within walking distance from the house. There is an un market on a block away in the Hotel Los Laureles, a delicious sushi restaurant ten minutes walk away and typical Mexican cafes just a stone's throw from the house!

“Fabulous Oaxaca Experience”

We loved staying in the house in San Felipe del agua. It was located a bit outside the city in a quiet suburb. It was readily accessible by bus that ran regularly and by an inexpensive taxi ride into or out of town. We didn't mind being out of town. There were several outdoor markets each week just a couple of blocks away so we could stock up on fresh produce, etc. And there were several small stores with other necessities. The woman next door made fresh tortillas. The house itself was large and comfortable, though not luxurious. We really liked our upstairs master bedroom with its own desk area. Guests could stay downstairs and had their own bathroom. The kitchen had all the necessities and we loved having a washer and then hanging our clothes out to dry. There was a woman who cleaned every week and kept the place spotless. The hosts were wonderful and very accommodating. Judith occasionally shopped for us at Sam's Club, took us to a doctor when needed, allowed us to have important business documents faxed or emailed and printed out. They were wonderful hosts. The only thing we didn't love was the pool because it felt a bit intrusive to use it because it's in their back yard but it's a very nice solar heated poor and the discomfort I felt was not because of the hosts. I just prefer a private pool. Oaxaca itself is an amazing and wonderful place. We felt totally safe there. We had fabulous food, loved the ancient ruins and the contemporary crafts. We were there more than two months and were never bored. We took cooking classes, visited the ruins and the various crafts villages, poked around the museums, the markets and the shops. I highly recommend this house, especially if you are planning to stay long enough to settle into Oaxaca (more than 10 days or so).
