Very Good

“This is a little piece of heaven an hour out of Rome!”

Reviewed 25 Jan 2014

I have been lucky enough to be a guest at Il Sogno for 5 years (we always go in the springtime) and every visit has been more enchanting than the last. Chris and Meg have done everything to make their guests comfortable. They have always responded promptly, and have offered interesting suggestions as well as resolved any concerns. There are books and guest recommendations in the house (that Meg and Chris have compiled over the years) about the town of Casperia, and neighbouring towns, as well as were to go and stay in Rome etc. The house is very well set up. Perfect for two couples. Each part of the house is well organized for gatherings in the dining room, or lounging in the livingroom or having quiet time in each of the bedrooms. The kitchen is cozy, functional and beautifully designed. The main bedroom with it's well designed windows and fireplace provides a space that is at once inviting and magical. The views from the 8 windows are stunning, overlooking the town of Casperia and the green valley below. The bathroom is just to die for. It is beautifully tiled in blue/green and it is a gorgeous place to bath and lounge away the hours. Yummy. There is an outside terrace which is perfectly set up for eating or visiting, outside. The little garden and the rockery within the terrace provides for a space that is intimate but connected to the beauty of Casperia. And Casperia, (the little town), is very well located. About an hours train ride from Rome, and set in the Sabine Hills. Quiet, yet accessible to Orta, Cantelupo, Orvieto, or Florence. A perfect jumping off spot. What I like best about Il Sogno is how skillfully it has been restored. Meg and Chris have kept all the wonderful character of a house, yet they have provided for all the important comforts. Staying at Il Sogno is a warm and welcoming experience. I highly recommend it. When we walked into the hall back in 2009, I could hear Il Sogno whispering, welcome home. Welcome to Italy!

“Superb. Gorgeous. Beautiful.”

Casperia itself is well worth a visit. It's hospitable and stunningly situated. The surrounding vineyards and olive groves are wonderful and one's lungs are constantly filled with an amazing rural Italian perfume. Il Sogno is fantastic as well. We were told of Casperia and this ancient house by friends/neighbours, which was one of those great moments where a vacation turns into something much more special. We visited in the spring of 2012. Four adults. The kitchen was a delight to use, the house is well-stocked with books, the beds are a+, and the morning view through the bedroom window is something to behold. Everything in this home has been tastefully considered. It's a first-rate base of operations for touring or -- as was the case on our expedition -- running along the country lanes. We look forward to going again. And again.

“A True Italian experience”

Five years ago, we were looking for an ideal place to have day trips close enough to Rome, but also something smaller, more unique. Luckily for us, we chose Casperia and Il Sogno. Aptly named, Il Sogno is the dream place to stay, while you are in a beautiful country setting, with great views, fantastic food, and most of all friendly people. Chris and Meg have created a spot very close to our hearts, so close, that we have gone back three times ! The house is stunning, with a large upstairs bedroom with wood burning fireplace at the foot of the bed, and windows opening up to a view consisting of the beautiful rolling hills of the Sabina. Their outdoor terrace garden, full of herbs and flowers was the spot of many a lunch, accompanied by good friends and just a little prosecco ! You will not be disappointed !!

“Il Sogno - A Little Bit of Heaven in the Magical Sabine Countrys”

Look no further! If you are searching for a perfect house to stay for a perfect Italian getaway, Il Sogno is it! The owners have done a lovely and respectful job rehabilitating and restoring their centuries old stone house, saving original features wherever possible. Il Sogno is on two levels with the dining room, living room/library, kitchen and main bedroom (with a fabulous fireplace)and main bathroom on the main floor. Downstairs is another beautifully appointed bedroom and ensuite bathroom. Il Sogno has a delightful adjoining garden for dining al fresco. If the weather is fine you'll be spending a lot of time there. They also have WiFi! A stay at Il Sogno is like the most relaxing stay you can imagine at a cabin on a secluded lake, except instead of a lake you are near the top of a historic thousand year old walled hilltop town with a friendly population of about 900 people including a small ex-pat community. But think of it, instead of your regular lakeside fare, you are just minutes away from a friendly store that provides prosciutto, salami, all sorts of ready to eat antipasti, the freshest fruit and vegetables - everything you need to prepare your own gourmet meals, as well as a nice array of wines, prosecco and grappa if you wish. Instead of a country burger joint you have access to Friends Cafe in the village, and there are other amazing restaurants nearby in Cottanello, Roccantica, Poggio Mirteto, and Vescovio. From Farfa abbey to the winding streets of Roccantica to the archeological Museum in Fara in Sabina, you'll love exploring the back roads of the Sabina. Orvieto and the delights of Umbria are little more than an hour's drive away, as is Rome. We found that, in Casperia, every day trip departure had a promise of adventure that was always amply rewarded. But equally rewarding was our down time at Il Sogno. Our first stay was for a week in april of 2009. Since then we've been back 2 more times for much longer stays and recommended it to friends.

“A Gem”

Chris and Meg Phillips have named their beautiful home in Casperia "Il Sogno" ("The Dream") and indeed it is a dream location. This dream begins when you leave your car in the very convenient and free car park and start walking up the winding cobbled paths of this medieval fortress town on your way to the apartment. When you recognize the wooden door of the apartment from the pictures you will know that you have arrived. Rosella will open the door for you for the first time and walking through it you step back in time into an authentic decor that will leave you breathless (the steps will also have contributed somewhat to your lack of breath...). The apartment is beautifully restored and offers all the modern conveniences you would expect. The kitchen is so well equipped that you tend to forget that you are away from home and the apartment is stocked with books and maps of the area and of Rome. The very helpful information book prepared by the owners covers everything you need to know with regard to the apartment itself, hiking in the area, shops, restaurants, trains and even Rome. As for the Sabina, this is my first, and definitely not my last visit. As opposed to the much advertised Tuscany, the Sabina seems much less frequented by tourists ( a good thing!), the hills are beautiful, and the people very friendly. We spent 10 days at Il Sogno, went twice to Rome (40 minutes by train) and took a day trip to Southern Tuscany, not to mention the hikes we took in the proximity of Casperia and a bit further toward the abbruzzo. We had a lovely vacation.
