“Even better”

Reviewed 23 Apr 2015

Yes, it was even better than the pictures and even better than the reviews. I've only stayed one other place in my many years of traveling that so captured the peace and beauty of a place. I loved the virtual outdoor living, but with screens for dusk when the biting bugs can be annoying. Air conditioning is not needed in the least. One recommendation - float on your back in the pool at night and watch the stars sparkling in the black sky overhead. Also, try the snorkeling at Haulover, on the south side. We were going to try the north side, because we heard it was great, but were a bit intimidated by the swells and the fact that no one else was there. So we tried the south side, and it was great! Just snorkel up both sides of the cove. Although the beach is a bit rocky, there is a sandy area, so spend the extra time to look for it. Also watch out for the sea urchins. They are quite close in to the beach, although spread out enough that you won't step on them if you're watching. Also, our adult daughter and her fiance spent 3 days with us, sleeping on the futon in the living room and it worked well. I don't know if I would put little children there, due to the pool being between the living room and the bedroom, but it would work fine for older children, and the parents still have the romance of their own (adorable!) separate bedroom. They loved Mooncottage too and cried when they left.

“The PERFECT Honeymoon”

Reviewed 22 Jan 2015

There truly are not enough positive ways to sum up our 10 nights at Mooncottage. From the very beginning, Brian was a tremendous help as we were researching locations to spend our honeymoon. He made sure to provide us any local "tips" we would need so that there were no surprises along the way. It's hard to trust all of the incredible review online (can Mooncottage really be THAT amazing?!) - but they are all true! The home is beautiful - pictures don't even begin to do justice to the stunning views - and the amount of space was perfect for the 2 of us. We wanted a honeymoon location where we could just relax and never feel like we were on a schedule, and Mooncottage provided the perfect accommodations for that. We spent mornings and nights just taking in all of the scenery below us, and spent our days visiting different beaches, restaurants, and bars each day. We came to embrace the (very bumpy) drive up/down the road to the house, and it's really kind of fun once you get used to it! The privacy is well worth the short extra drive -- and we loved being in Coral Bay on the less populated end of the island. We've already passed the name of the home along to a few of our friends who are looking for a special getaway -- and we can't wait to go back ourselves!

“We didn't want to leave!”

Reviewed 2 May 2014

My husband and I stayed at Mooncottage for too short a time in april 2014. We loved it and will hope to go back one day. The layout of the cottage is perfect for a couple. Separate sleeping cottage allows for one to sleep-in undisturbed while the other makes coffee. The island/asian decor is very attractive and the house was fully equipped with everything we needed. But the very best feature is the view which is absolutely to die for. Once there, you will be happy to skip a day at the beach and just bask in the breezy air, taking an occasional dip in the tiny pool, positioned perfectly between the bedroom and the deck. The drive in is pretty hair-raising, but once you get the hang of the very steep and very rough roads (typical in Carol Bay and much of St. John) and the perilously steep driveway, you'll be so glad you made the journey!

“Heave on Earth”

Reviewed 28 Apr 2014

The travel to St. John from Minneapolis was terrible. We were exhausted by the time we arrived to the island and then encountered power outage island wide. By the time we go to the road and headed up, I thought, "what have I done?" With all that, I can honestly say that I would do double the travel to return to Mooncottage. It's better than the pictures. At least 100 times during the week, my husband said, "We have never stayed in a place that we had a tough time leaving for the beach." Each day, we'd have breakfast and decide which beach to go to and we found ourselves dragging those mornings later and later (to the point we couldn't find parking for beaches a few of the days). This place is pure magic. It is so private. The view is unreal. The attention to detail through every facet of this house is simply remarkable. You can feel the love and energy that was put into this tranquil home. This is a positive place. It was the best week of our lives. We never wanted to leave - we ate several dinners in, too, simply because we adored being there & with each other so very much. I can't say enough about this magical place that sits high atop the mountain, looking out on east end and Tortola ... there truly are no words, one must simply go to experience heaven on earth.

“Paradise found.”

Reviewed 4 Mar 2014

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about all the 5 star reviews. Possible? I was planning a last minute vacation, and we were torn between booking a resort or a villa. Though Mooncottage was booked, the photos compelled us to reach out to Brian anyway. As luck would have it, the existing reservation canceled just prior to our booking elsewhere. We've rented many lovely vacation homes, and none have so perfectly suited their place and purpose. Renting vacation property on-line can be tricky. Either the photography over promises, or the house under delivers. In this case, I don't know that one hundred photos could actually convey how picture-perfect this house and location really are. The house feels very remote. The rough dirt road makes you feel like your are going someplace very exotic. This house offers a unique indoor/outdoor experience that make each equally enjoyable. We drove all over the island, and couldn't find a better view, much less one you could enjoy in complete seclusion. At night, the lighting transforms the house and gardens to a dramatic, resort-like setting. Instead of the property going dead-dark after sunset, it is illuminated in a way creates beautiful garden vignettes that can be enjoyed indoors or out. The walls of the living area are almost 50% open (screened) so you don't have to turn your head very far to catch a view - day or night. I had reservations about mosquitos, and not having aC or cable, which proved to be unfounded. We were as happy to return home as we were to go to the beach. Though on the remote end of the island, it's a short drive to the beaches, and the small grocery store at the bottom of the hill has most things. If your an avid snorkeler, you might bring your own or rent. The gear at the house is fine, but the fins are fairly small. There were plenty of towels, 2 beach chairs, coolers and a beach bag to haul your stuff. I would gladly skip the room-service if I had the opportunity to stay at Mooncottage again!

“a wonderful romantic escape”

Reviewed 5 Jan 2014

The house is beautiful , very private , maybe a bit far from the beaches but the breathtaking views and the lush vegetation around makes your stay a unique one . Bob , the house manager , was a great help and a very nice man . Snorkeling, coolers and beach chairs were available for us to use. A great choice of DVD s and good sound system made our evenings very pleasant . I would definitely recommend the house to anyone is search of privacy ,calm , relax and beauty . Alvise

“Gorgeous views, super private, and romantic.”

Reviewed 23 Aug 2013

My husband and I just spent the week at Mooncottage and absolutely loved it! We were greeted at Cruz Bay by Trip, who was super nice. He took us by the grocery store and then we followed him to Mooncottage. He asked us if we wanted to go the scenic route and we did. The drive there was gorgeous. We stopped on the road overlooking Trunk Bay and he volunteered to take our picture. It was just so beautiful. Once we were at Mooncottage, we were in awe over the view from the front porch. Just gorgeous! The decor inside was so beautiful, too. We spent most of our time at Mooncottage because we didn't want to leave. We loved how the house was built to enjoy nature as much as possible. No matter where you look, wherever you are in the house, you can see outside. We just loved, loved, loved it and can't wait to come back!!! Oh, and St. John was amazing, too! :) We drove all over the island and kept gasping at the views. We enjoyed the beaches and snorkeling but our favorite thing about the vacation was the house!

“Magical seclusion”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2013

My husband and I stayed at Mooncottage for a fabulous 10 days. It was nothing short of a romantic, private slice of paradise. Upon arriving in St. Thomas, we found out our luggage was "misplaced" by the airline. Bob arranged to have it brought to Mooncottage the next morning. What great service! However, by the next day we were discovering we weren't going to need 1/4 of the clothes we brought! ;) Pack light! We loved the zen/Frank Lloyd Wright style of the home...just simple, beautiful, clean and comfy. Well done Brian. Although we enjoyed eating at the many wonderful and casual restaurants in coral bay, we also made great use of the gourmet kitchen so that we didn't have to leave heaven too often. We had a blast at Carnivale on the fourth of July, though driving back from Cruz Bay in the dark was a bit hairy! Keep left! As an amateur photographer, I must have taken 1000 pics of the gorgeous flora and fauna at Mooncottage. We made friends with many crested anoles, hummingbirds, dragonflies and hermit crabs...so beautiful! This was a vacation we will always treasure. Thank you Brian and Bob!

“Relaxing and Romantic time on the Best of the Usvi!”

Reviewed 25 Jul 2013

My wife and I were lucky enough to experience the Mooncottage during our Honeymoon in July. What an amazing time we had! We enjoyed venturing out to the beaches each day, snorkeling all the bays and always took a dip in the shaded pool each afternoon once we'd had a bit too much sun. Our favorite times were eating breakfast each day on the wrap around porch and winding down in the living room at night watching an old movie while listening to the wildlife all around us. We will be planning a trip back at some point in our future. St John is a small island so don't concern yourself with this remote location, everything is still very close! Only tip... make sure you get fuel in Cruz Bay as you won't find another service station anywhere else on the island.

“What a Magnificent Villa!”

Reviewed 10 Jun 2013

My husband & I had the pleasure of staying at Mooncottage for 2 weeks on our honeymoon! It was great. Theincredible views are breathtaking. It truly is better in person than in the photos, which is rare. April is a good time to stay at Mooncottage, there's a lot going on on St. Thomas too(carnival!)We experienced sunny days 90% of the time and honestly the days it rained were a relief and an excuse for us to stay inside for once! We enjoyed the kitchen & the freedom to grill whenever, it really makes you feel like home. The drive up to the villa is a little creepy at first but you get used to the drive after the first time up. Honestly after a few beers its not so bad.. the whole island is very hilly anyway so definitely rent a Jeep!! We loved everything about Mooncottage! Every day we woke up to amazing views of Tortola & the aqua blue water. Be sure to watch for deer in the mountain side :) We appreciate the fact that Brian & Bruce offer their guests an abundance of towels, snorkeling equipment, chairs & coolers for the beach, not to mention the best soap the island has to offer & wide variety of spices in the fridge for cooking! We will miss the pool, it was great to come home after a long day of beaches & beers to a refreshing dip in the pool. You cant complain much. As with prior reviews the mosquitoes take some getting used to, however with the mosquito coils & the use of the ceiling fans we had absolutely no problems sleeping. Honestly, the whole island has mosquitoes so your going to have to get used to them quickly. We really enjoyed Coral Bay & felt like locals there for 2 weeks. It is a nice quiet side on the island with plenty of nighttime entertainment. But if you get too bored, just pop over to Cruz Bay for more fun.. or St. Thomas for even more! Some must tries in Coral Bay include: Concordia Cafe, Blue Cobblestone Beach(turtles), the burgers at Miss Lucy's & the karoake at Island Blues Bar. Enjoy! We cannot wait to come back :) What a getaway!
