“Another Amazing Vacation at Camp Hatteras”
We enjoyed another amazing week at Camp Hatteras. We have rented many rental homes over the years, but have never returned to a home we had rented before as we enjoy seeing and exploring new places. Camp Hatteras broke this tradition and we are so happy we returned for another winter adventure (we were here the same week in 2012). Sheila and Bob continue to be wonderful hosts and always have terrific suggestions on what to see and do. This year we didn’t have as much snow, but their suggestions for walks and a museum (The Wild Museum) were perfect for our family and children (ages: 17, 13, 8). The house is always spotless, warm, plenty of wood available if you want to heat by wood, and the kitchen is well-stocked. Trips to The VIC, Mt. Titus for skiing, Saranac Lake, the trails on the property, and the sledding hill on the property made for plenty of outdoor adventure and memories. The only drawback for us is that it is a 9 hour drive away or we would likely rent it more often. We can’t say enough positives about Camp Hatteras and give it our highest recommendation for the house, area, owners, and sites to experience in the Adirondacks!
“Lovely Stay At Camp Hatteras”
Our family of four from Connecticut thoroughly enjoyed our week-long stay at Camp Hatteras. It had all the comforts of home. It was neat, clean and well-stocked with everything we needed for our home-cooked meals and grilling. We ate out on the screened porch almost every night. The convenient location was perfect for our paddling adventures, trips to the Adirondack Museum, Whiteface Mountain, The Wild, and nearby hiking. It was a delight to relax either on the deck, curled up in the loft reading a good book, or while enjoying an evening campfire. Sheila was most accommodating, suggesting paddles and a hike, which suited us well. Glad we chose Camp Hatteras—highly recommended.
“Quiet cabin in the woods with hikes nearby”
Camp Hatteras is a real find and served our purposes very well. We were two couples who get together once a year for a hiking trip, this time in the Adirondacks. The cabin is indeed quiet and there is no sight nor sound of humans anywhere close. It is very close to the VIC (Visitor Interpretive Center) at Paul Smith’s College, which has several delightful trails through the woods and the wetlands. Also, many other trails are near. The owners live nearby and were at our door within a few minutes when we mentioned a couple of small issues. They were dealt with successfully. The Internet isn’t blazing fast, but works. The cabin shows that it is well-cared for and clean. I am so glad we chose to stay here rather than in the congestion of Saranac Lake or Lake Placid (the lake may be placid but the town isn’t).
“Camp Hatteras was perfect for our stay!”
This comfortable, cozy cabin-style home was perfect for our family (7 total)! It is comfortable and has all the conveniences to make your own meals, etc. Very quiet wooded acreage with lots of privacy. Downstairs bedroom and bath are great for folks who need ground level accommodations. Would we stay again? In a heartbeat!
“True aDK atmosphere & Experience”
Our family absolutely enjoyed Thanksgiving week at Camp Hatteras. We arrived after dark with the snow still falling. After our long drive to the Camp, it was especially welcoming to enter the cabin to soothing music and the scent of a balsam candle. It didn't take us long to settle in, light the wood stove and make ourselves right at home. We agree with all the previous reviews of this property, clean, equipped, comfortable and located in the midst of nature. We did venture into the Town of Malone and further north to the casino one night. But, all in all, we were happy to leave "city" behind for a few days. We had much enjoyed family time. The fellows took advantage of canoeing, tracking, hiking and hunting. Extra sledding for Mom and little grandson and plenty of slow cooked feasts. Our stay was everything we expected and more ... topped with outstanding maple syrup produced by hosts, Sheila & Bob. Delicious! We would definitely stay there again and would recommend Camp Hatteras to others.
“Relaxing retreat in the woods”
From the moment we walked into the house, we instantly felt at home in the beautiful surroundings. The house was spotless and decorated very tastefully and felt very welcoming after a long day of traveling. Every window had a view of the woods and the beautiful fall colors. The 2nd story deck, with a cup of coffee in the morning, was a perfect place to breathe in the fresh smell of the white pines. The campfire area, which was one of our favorite places at the camp, is very large with enough wood provided for at least a week and a great place to end your day. We had planned on staying only 4 nights, but since we were enjoying our stay so much and had beautiful fall weather, we ended up renting the entire week. It has all the amenities you would need and more! The proximity of the camp to Paul Smith's Interpretive Center was an added bonus. We were able to get in many nice walks almost every evening on the many trails at the VIC. Speaking of trails, the 33 acres of the camp, offers a "maze" of trails which is an adventure in itself. It's proximity to Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, and the high peaks is an added feature. The owners, Sheila and Bob, are extremely nice people and great hosts who have a wealth of information to offer those looking for things to do or places to go in the area. All in all, it was more than we anticipated and would definitely return to Camp Hatteras the next time we visit the adirondacks. We would highly recommend this camp for anyone looking to get away from their busy schedule and who want the solitude of being in the woods yet having all the amenities you have at home. This would also be a great place to stay in the winter for those who love to cross-country ski due to its close proximity to Paul Smith's VIC and their many groomed trails. Thanks Bob and Sheila and we hope to see you the next time we plan a trip to the adirondacks.
“We had a great weekend at Camp Hatteras”
This home is warm and cozy - has all of the amenities and is a great get away! Surrounded by woods - with a great fire pit - it is a home away from home!
“A Quiet/Secluded, Well Kept Cabin”
Within 20-30 minutes of Saranac Lake/Lake Placid, this beautiful and well kept house really gave us some much needed rest from hustle/bustle of city life. The serenity of this place gave us the opportunity to meditate, explore scenery of the adirondacks, and enjoy spending time together as a family. The property, nestled on 33 acres of woods, provided plenty of opportunity for the kids to explore and my wife and I some time alone. The owner Sheila, was our tour guide and gave us much needed suggestions of things to do and places to go, including the best restaurants in Saranac Lake/Lake Placid. She's also a "46er"-one who's climbed the 46 tallest mountains in the adirondacks! We highly recommend this place to anyone who want to get away from city life and explore the outdoors.
“Paradise - within driving distance of NYC!”
The time to pack our cars and head south (to NYC/NJ/RI) is upon us - our only regret is that we did not have many more days at Camp Hatteras! We expected rain all weekend but were pleasantly surprised by awesome weather on Saturday. We enjoyed quality family time such as hikes, campfires, amazing star-gazing, harmonica playing, home-cooked meals and great conversation. Sheila & Bob went way beyond our expectations and were truly fabulous hosts! We arrived to a toasty warm camp...with the wood-burning fire already filling the place with that unique smell and warmth that permeated the cabin and our hearts. They even had music playing - a great touch to an already spectacular adirondack atmosphere. This was everything that we had hoped for...and a bit more. The place was exactly as described. It was spotless and prepared. All of those little things that you might forget...fear not, Sheila and Bob probably have it ready for you! The price - reasonable. The location - convenient. The scenery - magical. Wildlife - bring your camera! We've been camping the adirondacks since 1963. We've also stayed at many cabins over the past years and this one certainly ranks among top. We highly recommend a visit to this camp...we certainly expect to be return visitors. Thank you again for ensuring that our stay was remarkable. Until next time - enjoy the peace. Warmest regards, The Donlon (and Kearns) Family. Ps - and they are not stingy with the firewood Woohoo
“Great for children!”
Our stay at Camp Hatteras was the perfect adirondack summer getaway. The house is beautiful and comfortable. There are two rooms on the main floor, one with a queen bed and one with 2 twin beds along with a full bathroom that were both very comfortable. The room with two twin beds also contains a portable crib for younger guests. Downstairs there is another room with two twin beds and another conveniently located full bathroom. The convenience of this bathroom to the downstairs bedroom was a big hit with our pregnant guest:) There was also a futon that folded out upstairs in the loft, making this home very comfortable for 6 adults and a toddler. The dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, high chair, plentiful toys, children's utensils and plates, and lack of water near the house make this house the absolute perfect place to go if you have young children with you. We really could not have been more pleased. Highly recommended!
