“Just what I needed”
This is a beautiful house with a well appointed kitchen. It is quiet and peaceful. I enjoyed the cool evenings as I live in the Caribbean Region and we had a very hot summer and fall. I would recommend this rental.
“An Oasis of Peace and Quiet among the Volcanoes”
The setting of Hale apapane is in cool rain forest (where it doesn't) seem to rain all that much) hardly visible to other houses and enveloped in exotic foliage. The structure of the house is an experience in itself. Both the layout and the materials used are masterful. The overwhelming impression on first seeing it was of a medley of wood containing space and light. This is a just a really nice place to be. The practicalities of the rental were mostly smoothly handled and the small glitches were promptly and cheerfully handled by the caretaker. In addition to all this, the location is ideal for an education and immersion in all things volcanic.
We absolutely loved this house and everything about it - location, layout, design, amenities, price. It was perfect for our family vacation.
“Convenient to Volcano National Park”
This home is so convenient to Volcano National Park. It is clean and comfortable. We stayed for 2 nights while visiting the park. Please take note that there is no central heating. There is a wood burning stove in the kitchen to heat the home, but we were unable to use it due to my son's allergies and asthma. Small room heaters were provided that worked quite well for the bedrooms and made sleeping comfortable. The oven did not work while we were there, and though we made the housekeeper aware, it was not fixed during our stay. Additionally, there was very little toilet tissue when we arrived. There was a note from the housekeeper that it would be dropped off later that night around dinner time. We found it on the porch the following day. Overall, this was a good stay, although there were some inconveniences that needed to be addressed.
Response from the owner I am glad you enjoyed your stay, and very sorry about the oven not working, and the extra toilet paper being dropped off late. We normally use one of the best housekeepers in the area, but had to use a substitute that day, which won't happen again. The oven has been fixed, of course.
“My new happy place”
Hale apapane was a great base camp for the Hilo portion of our Big Island vacation. My girls were so excited when we first pulled up; the house is tucked into beautiful ferns and ginger and they saw the swing, basketball hoop and sidewalk chalk, not to mention the hot tub. The inside of the house is beautiful, just like the pictures. The open floor layout in the living space let us all be together and also provided enough room for us to do our own things, too, like read, play games or write postcards. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed to cook our meals. I especially appreciated that there was coffee, filters and even sugar and creamers there, as well as some tinfoil/saran wrap. The bedrooms were large, airy and very comfortable. There are 5 of us in the family, but the house could easily have accomodated a few more. The closets were all large and had lots of storage space, and space heaters--just in case since this is the Volcanoes. Since we have a young one I also appreciated that the house had a pack and play, booster seat and other child specific toys and accessories, since those things are really bulky to travel with. I loved how warm and cozy the house was at night, with the rain falling outside and the fireplace inside. I also loved how bright and peaceful the house was in the morning, with birds singing and coffee brewing. I would highly recommend this house to any group or family who is looking for a central location with easy access to the Volcano Nat'l park (we were able to take morning hikes, come back "home" for lunch and go right back out again) Hilo and the Farmer's Market, and other places on the lusher side of the Big Island. My family is already looking forward to a return visit sometime in our future.
We had a great time. Wonderful house in a beautiful location. The small town of Volcano is really a neat place. It was especially nice to see Ira Ono again. His place is great. Hope to be back next year.
