Description

This historic gem is the most photographed home in Cape May. Built in 1869 by a wealthy Pennsylvania coal baron, John McCreary, its architecture is a mix of Victorian elegance meeting Gothic Revival. Architect Stephen Button designed this beautiful Gothic villa to feature a 60' tower. He also designed her with stenciled and ruby glass arched windows. This home features 4 large public rooms, 9 bedrooms and 9 1/2 baths (mixture of double beds, queen and single beds), all richly decorated with antiques, chandeliers, mahogany trim, beautiful wallpaper and Persian rugs. Shaded verandas and porches offer relaxing spaces for reading, watching the horse-drawn carriages go by or enjoying the summer breezes. Our location in the heart of Cape May's historic district puts you within walking distance of great shopping, restaurants, art galleries and, of course, our wonderful beaches and cool Atlantic Ocean. There is on-site parking for 10 cars and a large side yard for bbqs, games, weddings and family gatherings and more. A large modern kitchen renovated in 2012 features granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, custom cabinetry and new flooring. A second galley kitchen also features stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and custom cabinetry. All bathrooms have undergone renovation as well.

3. DO NOT MOVE LARGE FURNITURE OR ANTIQUE LAMPS.
4. Empty the dishwasher and remove all food from the refrigerators/cupboards – wipe out as appropriate.
5. Vacuum and sweep (please sweep the front and back porches).
6. Wipe out microwave(s).
7. Wipe out ovens.
8. Make up the beds with bedspreads, pillows, etc.
9. CLEAN THE GRILL.
10. REPORT DAMAGE IMMEDIATELY!!

“The Most amazing Victorian House”

People use the word "amazing" too often these days but I have to say it applies to The abbey. My husband, friends and I rented The abbey over a recent fall weekend and could not have had a better time. The house is large, clean, wonderfully decorated and the details wowed everyone.It's right in the center of town, a 5 minute walk from all of the shops and attractions. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms,large kitchen and great porch to sit outside and watch the world go by. If you need,there is plenty of room for at least 8 cars in the driveway. A big plus in a town where parking is at a premium. If you appreciate Victorian architecture, antiques and modern amenities, then The abbey is for you. Thank you, Barbara, for letting us into your wonderful home.

“I never want to stay anywhere else!”

We had an amazing experience at the abbey! My family of four (kids ages 2 & 4) stayed there for 4 days along with 3 other families (all with kids the same age). There was plenty of room for everyone & we even had unused rooms. Split 4 ways, the price was very reasonable. And we loved the fact that we could rent by the night (whereas most places require a week-long rental). The home is beautiful. Honestly breathtaking. And it is so well maintained. Initially, we were a little concerned that the kids would wreak havoc on the antiques; however, we were happy to find upon our arrival that there weren't many breakables within reach. Although this is a beautiful "bed and breakfast" style home, I was happy to find many comforts of a more modern home. For example, the beds were very comfortable and not squeaky, the bathrooms have been redone and are in great condition, the televisions/DVD players are new & impressive and the kitchens are fabulous. With so many people, it was great to have 2 kitchens to spread out in. And they have a Keurig coffee machine...so nice! Another thing we loved about the place was the beautiful porch, where we would relax after the kids went to bed. The abbey couldn't have been in a better location. It is one block from the beach, an arcade and the mall. We received excellent service. The owner and the property manager communicated regularly and quickly. They were more than accommodating. Also, I appreciated the fact that the owner, Barbara, emailed us the night we left to let us know that our security deposit would be refunded in full (a major victory given the 8 kids). There is really nothing negative about the house. There are a lot of staircases, which can be dangerous with toddlers, so I recommend bringing a gate if you are traveling with young ones. Honestly, though, I never want to stay anywhere else again. My 4 year old daughter summed it up best when she asked me, "Mom, is this 'castle' a dream?"

“Amazing rental!!!”

We stayed here for a group get-together of about 40 people to celebrate our wedding. The house was just perfect this type of event--the rooms are gorgeous and unique, there is a lot of communal space indoors and outdoors in porch/yard for people to hang out together and there is a huge kitchen for preparing/storing food and drinks.The owner of the house is extremely nice and responsive--she answered all of our questions right away and showed us the house twice before we rented it so that we could plan for our event. I cannot recommend this place enough! Thank you!

We loved the house, it was everything that we hoped it would be. The rental process was organized and easy. We enjoyed exploring the house as much as the rest of the activities that were part of our girl's weekend!
