“Holy View!”

Reviewed 28 Dec 2014

We just returned from vacation in heaven, and cannot stop talking about it! The view, the wildlife, the adventurous excursions, the food, the culture, the house- all not to be believed. It is a 3 hour drive from the airport, but SO, SO worth the trip! Aside from the obvious- the view, wildlife, house, we would highly recommend doing the whitewater rafting through Dominical Surf Adventures (our favorite excursion), set up by the fantastic manager, Daryl. Hacienda Baru, the local zip line, was perfect for first timers. The kayak tour to the caves at the beautiful Playa Ventana, followed by a waterfall visit and swim in Uvita was a great day, as well as walking the Whale's Tail, and strolling along Dominical beach. When relaxing, we lounged in the beautiful infiniti pool and took in the nature- toucans, white faced monkeys, hummingbirds, other beautiful birds etc. Unfortunately, we did not know to make a reservation to Cafe Exotica in advance (we were there during high season), so were unable to get a reservation, but a delicious consolation was Citrus.... really cool, rainforest chic, for lack of a better description, with delicious food. Por Que No? had fabulous views (ask to eat on the lower level near the water) and delicious food. Fresh, delicious fruit can be found right on the highway just south of the villa- the best pineapple ever! This is getting too lengthy, so if you are still reading this, just know that if you book here you can not go wrong. Your eyes will not believe the beauty around you!! Thank you so much to John and Mary, for your vision, and for sharing your heaven with us! We will return one day!! The Quinns CT

Response from the owner Thank you Michelle and Brian for choosing Flying Toucans for your family Christmas vacation 2015. Hope you can return again some day soon. John and Mary

“It's about the spectacular view”

Reviewed 11 Nov 2014

This was our first trip to Costa Rica and although I did lots of research prior to our trip, I wasn't totally sure what to expect. We arrived in the dark (and it gets dark at 5:30PM) so we couldn't appreciate the perfect setting of Flying Toucans until the next morning. My favorite part of our experience was the privilege of rising at first light and enjoying the sunrise every day (at 5:30 AM)on the balcony, appreciating the glorious colors of the sky as the tides came in and watching the tropical creatures as they came in to visit. Actually, the view is so spectacular at any time of the day with a constant show of wildlife, you will find it very difficult to leave when you have activities planned. This was the rainy season which I didn't fully understand but it was perfect for us -- on most days we didn't see rain until later in the afternoon or evening and when it rained, we quite enjoyed the experience of the tropical downpour. Flying Toucans was perfect for the two couples on our trip and we loved that the living room was actually outside. Even the kitchen shutters opened to take in that gorgeous view of the infinity pool and the Pacific . Clearly the owner’s thought of every detail in design and location, the house manager came to meet us on our arrival in the dark and was a font of information about the area during our stay since he has been a resident for many years; he goes above and beyond to make your stay perfect yet he knows exactly the right balance between being available and giving you your privacy . We took a side trip to Manuel Antonio one day which we thoroughly enjoyed (the benefit of traveling to Costa Rica in the rainy season, is the crowds are much smaller). When we returned to Flying Toucans that evening after walking on every available trail, climbing every step and seeing lots of wildlife, the grounds person surprised us all with a Pipa Fria which I think was the most refreshing beverage I have ever tasted! Having a cell phone for local phone calls was a nice feature and since we turned our USA phones off except for Wifi, it was something we found very useful -- thank you! All in all, Flying Toucans made our first visit to Costa Rica, one we will never forget and we highly recommend this property. It really was paradise!

Response from the owner Glad you appreciated the view as much as we do. Over the years we have never tired of it. It mesmerizes us again and again.

“Amazing View”

Reviewed 12 Sep 2014

This place was one of the most amazing vacation homes I have ever rented. We didn't spend enough time at the house. Bedrooms are comfortable and nice. The open air living room and infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean is second to none. We could have spent the whole 4 days in the infinity pool, but spent lots of times on local excursions. White water rafting, a rain forest hike and rappel down a waterfall and surfing lessons. The region is not touristy at all. There are plenty of adventurous excursions to do in the area. We even found good food at the local restaurants, after being told by the house manager, Darryl, that the local food was not that good. Eat at Angel Del Cuna, Murakatu and Porque No. The house includes an open air kitchen, with an Ipod docking station. We also saw about a dozen monkeys on the property while we were enjoying the pool. The only negative I can think of is that the house is 3 hours away from the airport by car. That being said. The house is well worth the drive. Loved it and hope to go back one day.

Response from the owner Good choice coming in September. Lots of guests avoid September/October but are pleasantly surprised at how nice the weather is. Come visit again!

“Paradise, As Advertised”

Reviewed 26 Jun 2014

We stayed at the Flying Toucans in early June. We are a family of 4, including 9 and 11 year old girls. It was an experience of a lifetime! This property is spectacular and immaculate. It offers relaxation, incredible views, a wonderful pool, and every comfort you could wish for. There is an abundance of wildlife which is entertaining in itself. It's obvious that John and Mary have gone the extra mile. Daryl was a fantastic resource, and Joiner did a splendid job keeping everything in top notch condition. Every previous review rates it a 5-star, with good reason. I second every positive comment that others have left. Here are some extra tidbits that may help enhance your experience. We had every intention to prepare our own meals, but quickly discovered that the local restaurants were fabulous and very reasonable. Specifically, Porque No, Exotica, and Parcella. Be sure to find these places in the daylight, as finding them at night can be tricky. We flew in and out of Liberia, a 5-hour drive. The roads were surprisingly good, much better than I expected. Road signs could have been better. I recorded my rental car inspection as a precaution, just to avoid any unpleasant surprises when I dropped it off at the airport. We rented a Yaris, which was adequate for the driving we did. The Whale's tail and horseback riding were fantastic. Lounging in the pool and admiring the views filled out our week. A splendid vacation all around! Thanks John and Mary! We've recommended Flying Toucans to our friends, and hope to visit again some time. Nick from Canada

Response from the owner Thanks Nick, Glad to hear Flying Toucans met and exceeded your expectations.

Yes, it's exactly how it looks in the pictures. Wonderful, private, immaculate home. John and Mary have dedicated a lot of thought and pride into this home and it shows.Sometimes descriptions seem too good to be true. Not the case here. My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I've rented in Central america for over 10 years and this home is a gem. Go ahead, book it!

Response from the owner Thanks you guys! Thanks for enjoying Flying Toucans so much. :) John and Mary

“Absolutely perfect”

Reviewed 19 Mar 2014

It is really hard to write yet another review without repeating what other reviewers have said. The property itself is immaculate, way above anything we have ever rented (we almost always rent a house on our vacation). As many have already stated, you could just stay there for the entire week, without going to the beach or taking trips and your vacation would be wonderful. Sipping cocktails by the pool while watching monkeys and listening to the ocean, all in absolute privacy (jungle is literally all around you) was fantastic. That said, we did the obligatory horse riding, zip line, beaches and restaurants - it was all very nice, but we were always so glad to come back to the house and jump into the pool. We can't wait to come back!

Response from the owner Thanks Neven. Great to know it even exceeded your expectations. We look forward to you coming back again. J&M

“Adios Mexico, Ola Costa Rica and Flying Toucans”

Reviewed 3 Jan 2014

My wife and I typically stay at luxury all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. After much research we decided to stay at Flying Toucans, everything looked perfect and it was! All the photo's, guest comments could not have prepared us once we were there in person, my wife cried as we entered the gate and saw the pool, ocean views and the villa. We were greeted by a Sloth hanging from the same tree that the toucans like to visit and eat berries from. The entire week the monkeys just hung out and swung and jumped across one side of the jungle (house in the middle) to the other. This was a regular daily show in the afternoon. We named the home "flying monkeys" but there were also plenty of toucans, pizotes, butterflies, colorful birds, humming birds and some very unusual critters that you have to see to believe. Really hard to believe that someplace like this exists anywhere in the world...Wow. The villa was designed perfectly, totally private from all neighbors, open aired, great weather and climate, and views from every room. One thing we noticed right away was that there were not any bugs or mosquitoes. The views of both the sunrise and sunsets were spectacular, we have never been anywhere in the world that had both. The pool was just the right size with beautiful turquoise tile that blended with the ocean below and the jungle, the infinity edge accentuated the endless ocean views. We as well did not want to ever leave the villa nor the pool, perfect temperature night and day with the best views of everything. The weather was great even though we stayed in November, a few downpours but sunny every day as well. We loved exploring the local beaches to many to mention, but especially enjoyed the Whale's Tail. The managers Daryl and Donna were very helpful with activities, restaurant recommendations etc. and they are very close by which was comforting. could go on and on (you say I have!) but we will be back. thanks John and Mary for the best vacation ever. Hard to rate this property on scale of one to five as it is a TEN (10). If you are still shopping around stop shopping and book this villa you will love it!

Response from the owner So glad you guys finally made it to CR after waiting so many years! Now you know why we prefer it over other tropical destinations we've been to. I thought that was so interesting that you said in an email that your diabetes count went down so much by just being relaxed at FT., Hope it stays down now that you are back home. :) John and Mary

“Absolutely wonderful!!”

Reviewed 27 Dec 2013

The pictures of this villa does not even do it justice, the place was absolutely wonderful!! We arrived at the end of the wet season in November. We planned several excursions throughout our week long trip, but found ourselves wanting to go back to, and stay at the house the majority of the time. The plants & wildlife around the home is spectacular! Multi-colored toucans arrived on our second day while we were lounging by the fantastic infinity pool. Lots of humming birds, and howler monkeys also accompanied us a lot of the time. On our third day we even spotted a sloth in a tree nearby the house. There are numerous beaches within walking distance and even several water falls! The location of the home is perfect, very close to restaurants, bars, shopping, zip lining, fishing, and even surf lessons. We loved spending our time outdoors by the pool staring at the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. It was sooo hard to leave beautiful Costa Rica! We loved this fabulous Oceanfront Villa appropriately named 'Flying Toucans' and we definitely hope to return as soon as we can!!

Response from the owner Thanks Winston and Catherine for staying with us. You are so polite and respectful and young! Wish I had first seen Flying Toucans at your age. :)

“I couldn't ask for anything more!”

Reviewed 18 Dec 2013

The first thing you see is the view...Breathe taking. Pictures just don't compare to the real thing. The house is very private, other than the monkeys, toucans, parrots that make regular visits to the feeder. We enjoyed and saw more wildlife at the house than at the national parks. Very peaceful at the house, a great place to relax! We could have stayed at the house every day and had a wonderful time! Great location, 10 minutes from a town (food, banks, places to eat) also near several waterfalls, lush jungle, and many beaches. The house is very well maintained, very clean, the grounds are beautiful and the pool is amazing. People ask me if I would stay there again...Yes! Loved every minute of the trip and house just made it all that much better! We actually had the privilege of meeting John (the owner) wonderful man with great advice about things to do and places go.

Response from the owner Thanks Jonathon for taking the time to write a review and for the kind words. When we lived in Dominical we enjoyed meeting our guests in person, but now living back in the US we miss having that opportunity. It too was a privilege to meet you wonderful Texans (my wife's family is from there) and we're so glad you enjoyed the beauty of Flying Toucans.

“Jungle Paradise!”

Reviewed 17 Jun 2013

We searched for a long time for the perfect spot that had the wildlife we were looking for and a great view. The moment we saw Flying Toucans we knew this is where we wanted to stay. The villa was amazing and the pool was very refreshing. Having a beautiful ocean view and a zoo in your backyard what more could you ask for? We were visited daily by monkeys, toucans, parrots and many more critters. Viewing all the incredible wildlife right in your backyard made our stay magical. I never knew I could enjoy bird watching so much but Costa Rica has so many beautiful birds to look at. We took a couple tours that Daryl recommended and we found them to be very enjoyable. The Tico people are so friendly and we loved the fact it was no pressure sales. I could not have picked a better place. Thank you for making the vacation of our dreams come true!!

Response from the owner Thanks John and Brenda for being part of the Flying Toucans family and sharing in the wowness we all experience from being there
