Description

Tropical Hideaway is a charming Hawaii-style downstairs studio apartment in a lush garden setting, with ocean and sunset views, plus a chemical-free swimming pool with waterfall and private hot tub. Tropical Hideaway is just a three minute drive from fabulous snorkeling, kayaking, diving and dolphin experiences at Honaunau (Two Step), and close to Kealakekua Bay & Ho'okena Bay.

The beautifully landscaped garden is filled with mango, papaya, banana, lilikoi, and other fruit trees and flowers. Pick your own breakfast (some fruits are seasonal) and relax in the back to nature environment or explore the island by day and return to your cozy retreat by night. A private hot tub and outdoor shower (hot and cold water) are on the patio. Explore the awesome beauty of Hawaii's active volcano or the upcountry pastures of Parker Ranch and the cowboy country of Waimea--each just a 1.5 hour drive.

Tropical Hideaway is located on the west side of the "Big Island" of Hawaii about 20 miles south of the town of Kailua-Kona, 1 mile off the main island highway near the "Painted Church," and 2 miles from the historic "Place of Refuge" National Park at Honaunau.

Rates: Studio $120 per night + tax and $100 cleaning fee for 1-2 persons, 4 night minimum with advance reservation. (Futon couch also available for a child 10+ or third/fourth person, $15/night additional for each person.) We recently purchased a new Serta $1000 Perfect Sleeper bed--not too firm, not too soft, just right! There is a memory foam topper for the futon couch.

Getting around

On the Big Island, you will need a car to get around. The island is big (larger than all of the other islands put together), so to see the most amazing sights, you will need to drive. You might consider splitting your accommodation to the Kona side and the Hilo side (or Volcano) to minimize driving time. Key sights are the many beaches and snorkeling areas, historic and cultural sites, the volcano, botanical gardens, and the incredible beauty of the the island.

Response from the owner Aloha V-diz, thank you for the wonderful review. I really enjoyed having you both as guests. I'd like to clarify a couple of things for those who read the reviews. In addition to the hot plate, the kitchenette has a large Oster toaster oven with convection setting, a microwave, a steamer and rice cooker, and two coffee-makers, blender, plus the gas-fired outdoor grill. Most guests don't do much cooking. And you were here in our rainy season, the summer. The rest of the year it hardly rains, as we are on the dry side of the island. There is a built-in bed-length step to the bed. I look forward to a future visit!

Response from the owner Hi Bob, I'm sorry that you weren't completely happy with Tropical Hideaway. The kitchenette is advertised as a kitchenette, not a kitchen, so it is limited in nature. I'm puzzled about your comment about the appliances, because the kitchen appliances are all fairly new. I will look closely at the utensils and make any needed replacements. Also, the cleaner spends four hours cleaning before each guest arrives, so the unit should have been very clean. I can speak with her about this. You were here during the rainy season, where there are more mosquitoes (the only insect that anyone has been bitten by). We do have a bug black light repellent unit, mosquito traps, citronella candles and torches to lessen any impact. Only certain people seem to be bothered by mosquitoes. I guess the mosquitoes don't like me, because I never even see any! I appreciate the positive comments you made about Tropical Hideaway, and am glad that you mostly enjoyed your stay.

If Kathleen (the owner) agrees, they’ll send you a revised quote outlining the changes. You can review and accept/decline this from the Manage your booking page. You’ll have 48 hours to take action before the revised quote expires.
