“Captiva is paradise”

Reviewed 27 Nov 2014

Just back from a week at the Mermaid House. This was the 2nd time we rented from Larry. The first being April 2013, we rented the Sun & Moon House. The Mermaid House was great for four people. Plenty of room and comfortable. A great beach bungalow!! Weather was great with sun & low 80's high 70's most days. We went from house to beach back to house to use pool and then out to dinner. You can walk to everything. Again, Larry was a great host. The house has everything you need. Larry supplies the beach gear needed and it is a three minute walk to the beach. We used the pool (85 degrees) every day and night. Pool area is large and good place to have breakfast & lunch. The covered area near the kitchen & master bedroom has two sitting areas and we did use this area the day it rained. WE WILL BE BACK! The Burkes Cape Cod

“Relaxing and Enjoyable stay in Captiva”

Reviewed 3 Nov 2014

My husband and I loved our stay at the Mermaid House. The house is extremely clean and very well stocked with everything you could possibly need during your stay. The private pool was clean and very refreshing after a day on the beach. Larry Hahn was very responsive to all my questions and emails and even called the night we arrived to check to make sure everything was ok and if we needed anything. I highly recommend staying here while on Captiva. Looking forward to revisiting the Mermaid House and Captiva again soon!

“Like finding a natural pearl along the beach”

Mermaid House: Relaxing and peaceful, immaculate inside and out, beautifully decorated and landscaped, very accommodating. These are some of the words I would use to describe this quaint, adorable cottage on Captiva Island. My sister and I enjoyed a week at the Mermaid House in April 2014 and we have nothing but great things to say about both the house and the owner. It is perfect for couples, small families, girl’s week, or the elderly. From the moment we opened the squeaky front screen door onto the screened in front porch, we were in love with this property. The owner, who is local, provides all of the comforts of home, with the perfect atmosphere to just lay back and relax. He is available throughout the week to answer any questions and to assist if issues arise. The screened-in heated mermaid pool, nestled among palm trees and tropical plants, is private and provided hours of quiet relaxation after spending the day at the beach. The beach is an easy 2 minute walk and a cart is provided to haul owner-provided beach gear, umbrellas, and chairs. Besides enjoying the beach and lounging around the house and pool, we especially enjoyed a 5 hour cruise to privately-owned Useppa Island where we lunched at the Collier Inn and walked along the pink pathways winding their way among the beautiful white houses. The highlight of the cruise was seeing the dolphins race alongside the boat as we made our way to the island. Captiva Village is a short 5 minute walk from the Mermaid House. Some of the restaurants we recommend are: Sunshine Seafood in Captiva Village (small venue but big on flavor), The Green Flash, just a 2 minute walk from Mermaid House (our favorite), and Lazy Flamingo on Sanibel Island (the salmon and grouper were excellent). I highly recommend this property for vacationing on Captiva Island. We booked our week for next year even before we finished our stay. Thank you, Larry, for a perfect week.

“Absolutely Gorgeous!”

The house was lovely, clean, and extremely comfortable. The grounds were immaculate - beautiful, graveled pathways leading to the pool, drive, and beach, perfectly manicured and all surrounded by tropical flowers in bloom! I had such a wonderful time in Captiva. This beach cottage is bright, beautifully decorated, and the paint colors are fantastic. It's a great location, very short walk down the path to the beach and the Gulf of Mexico. The owners of this cottage have obviously taken a lot of time to keep it up to date and make it a truly beautiful place to visit. I highly recommend this spot. I'll bet it's the best place to stay on all of Captiva. Thanks for a perfect week.

“A taste of heaven”

We have just spent an amazing week at Mermaid House, it was so relaxing and peaceful. The music system is great, being able to listen to our favourite Cd's or Ipod in the pool area was a real treat. The communication from the owner was great, very friendly and attentive. The home is very clean and comfortable, and so well equiped - very easy to cater at home. However there are so many fantastic restaurants near by that you won't want to cook! Would recommend The Bubble Room, The Mucky Duck, Key Lime Bistro and The Island Cow on Sanibel. Easy walk to shop, restaurants and beach. I would recommend this home to my friends and family, and can't wait to return. Very accurate descriptions and info, and in fact the photo's on website do not do it justice!

“Un lieu magique”

Pour ceux qui aiment la tranquillité, un endroit magnifique et reposant... La plage à deux minutes à pied, une maison super bien équipée, excellemment entretenue et très confortable, les propriétaires très sympathique et disponibles... un lieu que je recommande vivement à tous ceux qui ont besoin de se ressourcer. Pour sur nous reviendrons...

“Great Stay”

Reviewed 26 Jun 2013

Just returned from a great week at the Mermaid House in Captiva. We were welcomed to an open home with Jimmy Buffet music playing throughout the house and pool. Located only a 2 minute walk to the ocean we spent most morning hanging out on the beach,in the water or shelling. Afternoons were spent taking advantage of the pool at the house. The location is fantastic as we are just minutes away from some great restaurants (The Mucky Duck, The Green Flash and The Bubble room for kids). We are already talking about next years trip. Can't wait to return. Thanks again for a great week

“Serenity Now!”

Ahh, the Mermaid House. Such a delightul, well maintained, beautiful little oasis on the tiny island of Captiva. Not the first time we have stayed on Captiva, being going there off and on for about 25 years. We used to do the South Seas Pantation thing but tired of that. For the last few trips to Captiva we have used Larry's vacation properties and never been disappointed. The Mermaid House is such a delight. Everything and I mean everything worked to perfection. From the dishwasher to the pool we had absolutely no problems. The house is located about a 3 minute walk to Jensens Marina. I'm a fishing nut and was out in the Jensen's boats just about every day and caught a whole mess of Sea Trout whilch was quickly consumed for breakfast the following mornings. The lads at Jensens are customer oriented and fun to do business with. Just about everything you need with the exception of major grocery shopping is within a five minute walk of the house. An absolutely wonderful was had in Captiva.

“Location, location, location!!”

Cozy and well stocked home for a week away. The kitchen has everything you need (plates, utensils, small appliances, gadgets, storage containers, light cleaning supplies) - and I highly recommend you stock up for the week before you get to Captiva because all the restaurants are pricey (and most are mediocre, at best) & groceries are over-priced on the island. There are a few seasonings in the cabinets but nothing else provided or saved from previous guests. There were only 2 of us, so we didn't use the room with the twin beds, but the master bedroom was very comfortable and both bathrooms are clean and a good size. The outside living area is the reason to book this house! The screened in porch and pool areas are comfortable and fairly private. There are multiple entry points to the outdoor space (2 french doors of living room, 1 door off laundry area, sliding glass doors off kitchen and master) and we were there during a (sadly) chilly week in March - but it was magnificent to have all of those doors (no a/C on - I promise!) open and feel the breeze - I swear we could hear the waves crashing too :) The location absolutely cannot be beat. Period. It is situated almost equidistant from the beach and the bay - so you can catch both sunrise and sunset daily. A 5 minute walk to town or beach, the library is just a block or two away - it's perfectly close to all you need and just far enough away from the crowd that it is relaxing. We used the beach equipment when we could (it was chilly) - that was great, easy to use. Didn't get a chance with the bikes or grill. The pool is heated, but there were few days when the windy weather wouldn't allow us to comfortably take a dip - this was not the house's fault, obviously! One suggestion - the "beach" towels are very small - you may want to bring your own. The entrance to the beach is located just before the parking lot to the library... and it is an amazing introduction to the gulf - I've attached a pic :)

“You Won't Want To Leave!”

From the moment you pull up into the driveway, you'll be enveloped in the laid-back spirit of the island. We've been returning guests to the Mermaid House for five years and would not stay anywhere else. The home furnished beautifully with every amenity you could need. I've stayed in other Captiva rentals and none comes close to this one. Larry & Donna are the nicest, most responsive owners I've ever dealt with. When you see this house, you'll know they take great pride in it. Stay here - you won't be disappointed!
