Abbacca –la is set atop a beautiful, steep sided valley and is just 20 minutes out from Lucca. Views to the mountains from the house are truly stunning. The apartments are well equipped and very comfortable. Lella is a perfect host, eager to help but not at all intrusive. Having read all the previous reviews we were beginning to doubt whether it would live up to expectation, but it did! It was easy to explore nearby Lucca, Pisa, Florence and the coast. We loved it, our teenage girls loved it and my elderly in laws had a wonderful time. Lella cooked a delicious meal for them while the younger members of the family headed into Lucca for one of the Summer Festival Concerts. What a wonderful place to spend a week.
“A very beautiful spot and great hosts”
Abbaccalà is an unusually beautiful place, even for Tuscany! It sits up high, at the head of valley, near a little village called Aquilea, with views downward over clusters of houses, olive groves, and fields. Above it, at the top of a hill, is a ruined church, partially leveled by bombardment during World War II. All of this was visible from the windows of both apartments we stayed in. The panorama was especially enchanting in the mornings and evenings. The hosts were extremely helpful and kind, without being obsequious in any way. Since our visit took place in March, the apartments had to be heated well in advance of our arrival to offset winters' chill, and they were very cozy when we got there on a Monday evening. All the beds were comfortable, plenty of clean linens were available, and the kitchen had everything we needed. Freshly ground coffee appeared soon after we mentioned our addiction. The larger apartment is perfect for a family with children and the smaller studio we also rented was attached to it, enlarging the living space considerably. If you wish, Lella will prepare meals made from locally available ingredients. The fresh eggs are a revelation for anyone accustomed to the industrial variety and the focaccia made from chick pea flour was simple and especially delicious. The hosts also provided very clear and detailed directions to the house and were very helpful with other arrangements in the area. There are many places of interest to visit nearby, and we spent a day with Lella as our tour guide. We saw many beautiful towns in the Garfagnana region and our day ended in the Piazza dei Miracoli in Lucca. That was a very appropriate place to finish since the next morning, and every time I think about it since then, I feel like our visit to Abbaccalà was magical indeed. I can’t help thinking that it would also be a perfect place to go for someone looking for a quiet getaway; a place to read, write, and relax. We are all looking forward to going back soon, and will find a way to have a longer stay next time.
“Glorious Mountain Farmhouse”
We had a lovely stay in the Abbaccla -la farmhouse in the mountains surrounding Lucca. After a frenzied day of organizing and meeting up with family, the gates opened to the quaint farmhouse and all the surrounding beauty of the area. We were delighted each morning as we watched the sun unfold over each hill and valley from the stone terrace. The accommodations were cozy and the walk to the top of the mountain was surreal; only the sound of birds as the view below became more and more breathtaking. Lella and her family were wonderful and even though late in the season, all their dedication to natural growing still flourished all around us. Lella prepared us a meal that was memory making, and we sat and ate and talked like family in a kitchen that felt like home should always be. Even now I try to make sure I remember every detail of our visit to the home she shared so graciously with us.
“everything was just perfect”
We were looking for an organic farm that also offered cooking classes. Abbaccla -la was absolutely perfect .We had the very spacious 2 bedroom apartment which was very comfortable and clean . The views over the valley were splendid and the walks in the area were equally magnificent. Lella picked us up from Florence station and we also spent 2 days travelling with Lella around Tuscany as our guide and driver.Lella is a beautiful person ,very kind and great fun. Her English is excellent. We also did two cooking classes during our week long stay which we found brilliant .We learnt to make pasta, gnocchi, sauces, tiramisu , semi freddo, bruschetta ,celery salad. The olive oil that is produced on the farm is the tastiest we have ever found. There were so many great experiences to be had whilst staying at the farmhouse and it is a holiday that we will be hard to beat anywhere else
“Exactly what we were looking for.”
We wanted to spend two weeks in Italy, staying in one place, reasonably priced, using a rental car to explore Tuscany. We also wanted to experience an Italian cooking class and be close enough to a small village that we could walk for a cup of "Caffe' Americano". We found exactly what we were looking for at Agriturismo, Abbacca-la. We were made to feel like visiting family rather than as paying guests. We were able to make some of our own meals in our own kitchen and experience world class, historic, local restaurants within 10 minutes of the farm for others. The farm is situated where day trips to Sienna, Florence, Cinque Terre, and Pisa are easily doable. We loved this place!
“The most amazing cooking lesson ever!”
Me and 4 of my friends did a cooking Lesson with Lella. We cooked a 4 course meal and it was amazing. We cooked bruschetta, pasta and sauce, chicken and tiramisu. The 5 of us had the most fun and of all my our Europe trip it was definitely a highlight. One of the best parts was how she made us feel like we were at home when eating. Lella served us and each individual meal and have us wine and bread and olivies etc to also enjoy. The best part was the amazing view! It was of all of Tuscany it was amazing! Our ages range from 22-28 although I would recommend any age taking part in the cooking classes!
“Lovely agriturismo in a beatiful area”
We had a great stay at this agriturismo. The owners were very friendly and have a beautiful place. The surroundings are really beautiful and it is only a short drive to Lucca, which is a lovely city. If you like good food, you can take cooking lessons. We had one in making pizza and focaccia in the wood oven and it was great. It is also a fantastic area for riding your race bike.
“Take in the view, relax and eat!”
The perfect spot for doing all these things. We were looking for a quiet week, away from the hustle and bustle of big cities and this was perfect. The accommodation is as it says on the tin, basic, functional and very congruent with it's surroundings. It enabled us to take advantage of the excellent local produce and rustle up something for ourselves when we wanted. Lella was very accommodating in advising us on good local restaurants and we would highly recommend the cooking class which was fun, relaxed and the food excellent. Plenty to see in the area if your inclined or you can just sit by the pool or take in the views.
“Lovely scenic, peaceful, friendly location and accommodations”
We stayed here for 7 nights with four people. The unit we rented was as shown in the photos. Clean, comfortable and had everything you needed and well stocked. Great place to unwind and relax but very close to major highways and cities. Lucca is a great place to shop and site see. You can do lots of day trips and our host gave us good tips on places to see and go. Our host was very friendly and helpful. Even helping us find a doctor at the last minute so we could fly home. We had a cooking night, which I highly recommend. Amazing food and we learned how to cook it too. I would recommend this rental to anyone that is trying to find a slice of the real Italy. Thanks Lella for making our stay everything we hoped it would be.
“Treated like part of the family”
Our family felt like we were part of an Italian farmhouse family. The house sits up on a hill which gives you a feeling of being in the country, but you are only 15 minutes from the city. We had the 2 bedroom apartment which was perfect for my husband and 2 young teens. They have 2 dogs, a pool and jacuzzi which we all enjoyed. The owners took special care for us since we had driven far the day we arrived and made dinner for us even though they were going out that evening. We took the train to Florence and Siena that week and it worked out fine. All 3 of the apartment rentals decided to do the pizza dinner on the last night we stayed. It was fantastic and got to end out Italy trip on a perfect note.
