“Lovely, clean, well-placed home”
Kapoho is such a great location, and this home is a beautiful place to stay in Kapoho-- a short walk to the famous tide pools for snorkeling, a short drive to the lava-heated warm pond, down the red road from Uncle Robert's, an easy trip in to Pahoa. Fresh flowers make it welcoming and Plenty of closet space--and hangers!!! Bring your food and coffee. Very sweet!!! Mahalo!
Response from the owner Mahalo! Glad you enjoyed your stay.
“August in Kapoho”
The four of us arrived late on a Monday. The house is exactly as it looks in the pictures. It's modern, clean and very nicely designed. The kitchen is excellent and has just about everything you need to cook just about anything (we love to cook.) The back balcony has a good grill (small but good.) The back yard leads out to jungle so you can grill in your BVDs if you like. Sure there is no AC but the celling fans work great and it's never that hot. The wifi worked great. The TV reception is OK but why are you watching TV?....you're in Hawaii? There is cell service but I never got more than 2 bars on my Verizon Iphone. More importantly, there is enough of a signal to use the navigation app. That noise you hear, is the ocean crashing on the lava about 1 1/2 blocks away. The next morning we walked to the tide pools where the snorkeling is just as good as everyone says. DO NOT forget swim socks. Trying to walk on the slippery lava in flipflops is tricky and ludicrous in bare feet. Once you get in the water, it's all worth it. The fins, masks and snorkels that they keep at the house are good enough for novice snorkelers like us but investing in a good mask and snorkel wouldn't be a bad thing. There are plenty of fins in all sizes so don't both to buy those. Now, there is some grocery shopping you can do in nearby Pahoa, but the two natural food stores don't quite suit carnivores like us. Luckily we stopped at the KTA Super Store on the way out of Hilo which is awesome. They have everything you could need, plus a good bakery, deli and meat department. Prepare for the higher prices, it's Hawaii. Restaurants in nearby Pahoa are ok. We bought some great marinated meats at the KTA and grilled. Breakfast was fruits and breads.....exactly what we wanted. Hilo is about a 30-40 minute drive through lush and amazing scenery. You have to go to the Ahaluanui Park, which is about 15 minutes away. It's a volcanically heated pool where waves crash over and into it. There is some marine life here, but this place is ideal for families with kids. The water is about 5-6 at it's deepest. We rented a 4x4 so we drove to Champagne Pond which made the extra cost of the 4x4 rental totally worth it. It's a bit too far to walk. Cat, the property manager is only two doors down and is very helpful. The owner contacted me after returned and is very very nice. I would definitely stay here again.__
“A Lovely house in a quiet area and 5 minutes walk from great snorkelling”
Would highly recommend this house. Cannot think of one negative thing to say about it. Plenty of room and we had a great time. The snorkeling pools are a 5 minute walk. Its located in a quiet neighborhood off the beaten path.
“Kapoho Kaiyo Ocean Retreat was perfect for us!”
We were Oahu kamaianas some time ago and, planning a visit to Hawaii, were looking for a place to stay a week on the big island that was not too touristy. My sister had stayed in the Pahoa area and thought we would like it. Kapoho Kaiyo Ocean Retreat was perfect for us. It is located in a real Hawaiian community of locals with a mix of a few vacationers. The house is spacious and comfortable, very well-maintained and equipped. Nice kitchen for cooking if you like and good restaurants nearby in Pahoa. It is located within a five minute walk to the lava pools that are full of fish and offer relaxing snorkeling. It is a couple of minutes by car from huge natural hot-tub, warmed by thermal springs. The property "manager" is helpful if you need her but invisible when you don't . Everything is perfect about his place. Lucky you live Pahoa.
“best snorkel spot on the Big Island”
Enjoyed our short stay here at Kapoho Kaiyo retrest with another couple. We both had great space and enjoyed the open air feeling of the living area. The best part was the most fantastic spot to snorkel on the BI just a short walk away. having a hose to wash off snorkel gear and a line to hang it on was a bonus. The manager lives 2 houses away and was most cordial when checking in on us. She also invited us to a pool party at her home which was a thoughtful gesture. We were unable to attend but appreciated the invitation.
Our family just returned from a visit to the island and loved our stay here. Everything was exactly as described in the listing. We really appreciated the fact that there were water shoes and snorkel gear for our use. The house was perfect for our family of 5 with 3 young adult children. Everyone had space! The tidal pools were just a couple of blocks away and our first morning there we watched the sun come up and did some snorkeling! Memories were made and we appreciate all that the owner and the manager did to make our trip one for the books!! We will recommend this to our friends and truly hope to return soon!
“A beautiful home on the beautiful Puna side of the Big Island”
You are looking on the Puna side of the Big Island because you want easy access to the wonder of an active volcano, or you want to swim with the fishes in protected tide pools, or you want to immerse yourself in tropical lushness, or you don't want to be surrounded by fellow tourists, or you just want to remove yourself from the hubbub of your normal life. We found that the Kapoho Kaiyo Ocean Retreat provides all of the above. Three of us stayed in the house for several days: my husband, his mother, myself. Whatever stresses we brought with us from our normal life drained away as we stepped thru the door. The decor is beautiful. The walls are vivid colors, shades of teal, purple, blue. They bring the outside in and are cool and calming. The kitchen is well-appointed. The furniture is comfortable. It was heaven to awake to the birds in the morning, make a cup of tea and enjoy it on the lanai as I watched the birds, the vegetation and the sky. The owner provides copious notes on what to do and see in the neighborhood and beyond. The "toy closet" is stocked so we didn't have to bring water toys with us. The house is well-maintained and clean. It did not feel like a rental. I have already recommended Kapoho Kaiyo to several friends and other members of our family. I would love to go back!
“Great Hawaii Rental in Puna district and by the ocean”
My husband, my adult daughter and I just spent a month at Kapoho Kaiyo Ocean Retreat and it was wonderful month. The house & location was great as was the dealing with the owner, Deb, and manager, Cat. The house itself was roomy, well decorated, and had all the amenities that we needed, even such items as water shoes(I forgot mine)and a snorkel(mine developed a leak). It is situated so that it feels private despite neighbors close by and has a wonderful view of Green Mountain. The windows all around the large great room make it airy and bright and allow the trade winds to help keep the house cool. The ceiling fans in each room cool down the house, so that it is always comfortable despite no aC. The washer and dryer were a great convenience for our extended stay. The manager Cat and owner Deb were well organized, all paperwork was done easily and quickly, including a quick return of the damage deposit. There were maps, guidebooks and directions to answer any questions. Cat, the manager was accommodating and available, if needed, but unobtrusive otherwise. Kapaho is an ideal location to enjoy the beauty of the area. Snorkeling in the tide pools (a short walk) was truly unique, fish and coral were diverse & colorful and the water temperatures ideal. Short rides in either direction led to beautiful parks with breathtaking views or unusual features, such as the hot ocean pond heated by underground volcano heat. Volcano National Park is also a short ride. A birthday celebration at Volcano House was an experienct to remeber with delicious food and the view of the active lava lake in the Kilaeua caldera. Pahoa, close by, has a distinctive atmosphere and great restaurants. While we were dining at Kaleos in Pahoa, President Obama's sister & guests was there also. Hilo & everything it has to offer; shops, beaches, restaurants, zoo, and other tourist sites, is 40 minutes away. Not to be missed are all the local markets including Hilo, Pahoa and Maku'u Market.
“A great place to relax and to explore the east side of the Big I”
For me going to hi means an opportunity to enjoy fresh fish, great fruit, and a relaxing place to enjoy these. I also look forward to exploring the area and finding unique places to eat, hike, and enjoy the sea. I found Kapoho Kayio to be a great place to relax and from which to explore. Nearby in Pahoa I found a place to buy fresh fish located next to the grocery store. I enjoyed grilling the fish on the patio for dinner. One evening I was delighted when the clouds lifted and from the patio I could see the observatories on top of Mauna Kea. This view inspired me to rent a 4x4 vehicle from Harpers in Hilo and drive up to the summit for sunset. There are extensive farmer's markets in Hilo (Saturday and Wednesday) and near Pahoa on Sunday. These are easy to reach from Kapoho Kayio which has a blender and ice maker so I could have fruit smoothies for breakfast. The tide pools are a 10 minute walk from the house. These pools are located in the volcanic rock and many are large and deep enough to snorkel. The house has a toy box (really a closet) that contains snorkel gear as well as a selection of reef shoes for walking on the volcanic rock surrounding the tide pools. It is a short drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I wanted to see molten lava entering the sea but did not want to do the 14 mile hike inside the Park. So I went on a guided hike from Kalapana which is only a few miles from the house. The company I used is Kalapana Culture Tours. We hiked 5 miles round trip. Our guide found a safe place for us to view molten lava from about 30 feet and we had a great view lava flowing into the sea close enough for great images. I did regret not spending more time sampling the dining in options in nearby Pahoa. There is a wide variety of options ranging from ethnic to gourmet, most featuring local fruit and fish. Oh well, I just have to stay longer next time. I would chose Kapoha Kayio again as a place to relax and enjoy the delights of the area.
“great place for girls getaway”
This was a great house for a group of friends to spend some time together. We had 8 of us that just wanted to relax and spend time in the tidal pools. The layout of the house was perfect with the great kitchen, eating areas and the deck with the grill. The house is in great striking distance to Hilo and to see the Volcano. I would recommend this to friends and consider coming back again!!
