Description from owner

Description

Percy Hill is a beautifully restored century-old farmhouse, located in the southeastern region of Prince Edward Island. The very private 700 acre property features gentle rolling hills and forest. There is an organic vineyard to the south, a small forest to the north and a very large backyard. Built on the top of one of the highest spots on PEI, Percy's offers one of the most spectacular views on the Island. On a clear day you can see Northumberland Strait and the long coast of Nova Scotia. Make yourself at home and take advantage of the generous interiors.

The home has all wooden floors and is decorated with Island-made furniture, antiques and original paintings. While having all the charms of Country living, Percy's has all the conveniences of a luxury home. If you play the piano, you will enjoy our Mason & Hamlin upright.

“A beautiful farm house and dream of returning”

Reviewed 13 Mar 2018

I have traveled throughout every corner of North America on a motorcycle, in a car, and on a train; 170,000 miles on a motorcycle in 6 years, 300,000 miles in a car for a total travel of more than 500,000 miles in 40 years. My experience staying at Percy Hill was the most memorable from all these places. Often, I lay in bed dreaming of someday returning. I still see the crystal blue sky in the cool April morning out the sun porch window, viewing the coast of Nova Scotia. I smell the fresh cooked bacon and eggs, and pancakes from the sun-lite kitchen. I still can taste the fresh fish and mussels from the market. My four teenagers loved the house and the vast space outdoors. The house is a small mansion, well equipped, modern, updated yet simple and clean, energy efficient (heat pump and wind generator), and spacey yet many places for small group discussions. You see my family came to America (Maine) 400 years ago, as farmers and sailors and as travelers, and recently (my generation) our family has a similar set up: 700 acres with a farm house (built 1812-3) in the middle of a working farm, which has been only in 3 families for 8 generations. I dreamed of visiting PEI since high school 40 years ago. And I love PEI and its people. Percy Hill has a special meaning to me. I dream of returning. I truly mean that. You too will have memorable experiences that will stay with you forever when staying at Percy Hill. Sebastian is an excellent host, and did a wonderful job updating and maintaining the home. He is easy to work with and extremely accommodating. I hope this helps you in deciding where to stay in PEI, for it took me months to research and decide where to stay. It was Sebastian's pictures, location, and these reviews that helped me to decide. I made the right decision. Thank you for reading my review.

“This is a terrific location and fabulous view, less than average maintenance.”

Response from the owner First off, I feel I need to apologize for your less than perfect stay, but I also feel that some of your comments warrant a response: - I always greet my guests in the evenings as I work during the day and often they do not check in or are not at the house (as was your case) until it is evening. Prior guest know that access is always given per key code. That way, guests can enter the house and make themselves comfortable without having to wait for me, but all that is needed is one bad experience, so from now on I make it a policy to call ahead. The question about payment is a routine question to make sure everything has been settled between us. In your case the transfer from Flipkey had not yet happened, but I sensed that my question led to some uneasiness on your part. - There is a small wind turbine on the property, but there are turbines and turbines. The model is an Airstream (diameter 2 meters), designed for sigle family homes. It is 100 meters away from the house. It is also not visible form the house. This is in an effort to reduce my dependence of fossil fuels. It can also be turned off. Then, it is just a steel tower, not visible from the house. - The plant front of the shed and growing into the window is not a weed, but a clematis plant. - For the dust and the candy wrapper, I apologize. As always, I try and make sure the house is 100% spotless when guests arrive. It appears, this time I was not successful and things were missed. - The garbage system is indeed a challenge. Prince Edward Island only picks up garbage every two weeks and we have guests from parts of the world that have different garbage separation systems. That's why the garbage can at the bottom of the road is sometimes full. I will remedy this next year by doing two things: I will get a second garbage container and I will lock the shed to tourists as it is a shed for the grounds people (their beer cans) and for storage of the recyclables and guests should not have access to it. - At the end of your stay, I indeed was on the property. I was showing prospective grape buyers the potential harvest. We were parked on the bottom of the property, only a few feet away from the public road an more than 200 feet from the house.. In general I alert guest to the fact that every now and then, groundskeepers.. etc will be present on the property. it is part of being guests at Percy Hill. Having said this, we make an effort to mowe the lawn when guests are away and to stay out of the private zone 200 feet around the house. - There is access to the property through an extensive trail system, but you never asked about it. -The "Book how things work" is a good suggestion. I will put one together. Again, I am sorry your stay was not what you expected, I hope you will find a place that suits your needs next time you visit PEI.
