“An experience of a lifetime”

Reviewed 6 Feb 2015

Arriving at the beach house is an experience in itself. The "driveway" is steep and consists of switchbacks reminiscent of a Colorado hiking trail. This just adds to the uniqueness of the house and the experience as well as the feeling of seclusion. The house itself is really three separate living areas. A main house with kitchen, TV room, and master bedroom, a cottage with more bedrooms and bathrooms, and an other bedroom/bathroom under the main living area. The house can be best described as a bit awkward in it's layout, but that's not why you are here. The outdoor living spaces can be described as incredible. There is a HUGE deck with VERY nice outdoor furniture. There are two outdoor dining areas, one covered that worked well even in hard rain. The main deck feels like it is hovering over a lush jungle overlooking a beautiful view of the ocean and adjacent islands. We spend 90% of our time there just enjoying life, day and night. There are stairs and railings everywhere. If you have mobility issues, this is probably not your place to stay. Also we were traveling with a three year old. If he were any younger, I would have been very nervous about him navigating the stairs, occasionally without railings. A slip could be the end of your vacation or worse. The website boasts a "clothing optional" vacation. This is entirely true. The seclusion of the home, the numerous outdoor showers, and the private beach can easily be enjoyed without any reservation with or without clothing. Be sure to take advantage of this. Even though we were staying with extended family, there was no concern about using outdoor showers, there is surprising privacy. After the amazing deck the other reason you are staying at this home is for it's beach. It is no joke, this is private! The only way to get here is by boat and because of the surrounding reef and the fact that it's not all that big it just isn't visited by anyone. With that said, it's more than enough beach for anyone and for the adventurous types there is a lot of rock climbing/scrambling that you can do to get beyond the beach to other rock outcroppings, tidal pools, and other interesting views and vantage points. One of the features my wife and I appreciated is that at the time of year we visited (early January) there were portions of the beach shaded by trees making us less hyper vigilant about getting sunscreen on our kids and ourselves, a very nice luxury. We could play in the water for hours without having to worry about excessive sun exposure (you can get sun if you want it, no problem). Another amazing feature is the boat house stuffed with fun toys. Boogie boards, kayaks, life jackets, snorkel gear, and more. Other features to note are a very nice and large grill, well functioning washer/dryer (key for the kids and their messes), a hot tub, which you sort of don't really need, but it's there if you want it, and good coverage by cell service and internet access through the home network. Bottom line is, is that this is an absolutely wonderful place to stay. It's unique, super private, comfortable, but not luxurious, and where else are you going to find what is truly your own private beach. If you are not the fence, just do it!

“Beyond Perfect!”

My husband and I, along with our two sons (ages 17 & 13), stayed at The Beach House with friends and their 13-year-old daughter. Camille met us at the airport and led us to the property. We had her pick up a few groceries for us, enough to get us through a couple days until we hit the stores. She is a gem! The house and cottage were absolutely charming and extremely comfortable for all of us. The kitchen had everything we wanted, most importantly, a cork-screw as we spent every evening on the deck with a bottle of wine...or two! No description can convey the stunning beauty from the decks - you'll have to see it to believe it. As luck would have it, there was a meteor shower while we were there, so we spent time on the comfy deck furniture watching the stars...spectacular! The kids were worn out by the end of each day after spending hours snorkeling, spearing, kayaking, and fishing. The reefs here are full of creatures - we saw lobster, cuddle fish, sea urchin, sea turtles, sting ray, and many other fish species - the best snorkeling on the island! The outdoor showers were fun and by the end of our stay I had my husband convinced that we needed an outdoor shower at home. Our last, full day on the island was spent entirely on the property - we wanted to savor every moment of relaxation on the beach at The Beach House! Side note: Every night after sunset we would go out to the walkways on each side of the main house and watch the trek of the hermit crabs, we call it "Hermit Highway!"

“Wore out our teenagers!”

What a wonderful place! Our kids were exhausted at the end of our week stay and rarely even turned on the TV! The snorkeling was amazing and the water was beautiful. The beach is lovely and the hammock in the palm trees on the beach was my daughter's favorite reading place. 4 wheel drive is recommended as the place is very private and secluded. The pictures just do not do justice to the beauty of this home. We did see abundant aquatic life including lobsters, cuddle fish, grouper, sting rays, barracuda and many other creatures. The outdoor showers are a treat and as I read in another review, the iguanas do come and steal your soap if you leave it outside! Probably not very good for them, so I took my soap in after showing when I confirmed that they were taking it. Every evening.. the hermit crabs (which were huge) would come out on the pathway. We called it Hermit Highway. They are amazing and adorable! I think the best day was when we stayed down at the private beach all day long just enjoying the beauty of this place! I didn't want to leave...

“Fantastic beach house!”

We stayed a week at the Beach House and I did not want to leave! Great host from the day we landed. Escorted us to the house and checked in regularly via phone. Great recommendations for anything and everything asked. The house is very well equiped. Definately follow Donald's recommendation for a 4 wheel drive vehicle for getting to and from the beach house. Wonderfully secluded.

“The Best Place Imaginable!”

Our week at Don's place was beyond description. The house and cottage are charming and comfortable, and the location without peer. We spent our days relaxing on the beach and playing in the warm water, with only a few trips out to explore the island, ferry over to St John and enjoy a dinner or two at local restaurants. Snorkeling is delightful and we saw a turtle as well as lots of fish. The rooms are comfortable and fans keep the warm air circulated and fresh. Having everything available from lawn chairs, kayaks, and beach toys to a fully equipped kitchen made it like being in our own home, only better! It was blissful to sit on the covered porch in the afternoon, watching the native wildlife scampering up and down the trees and making forest noises. A real favorite was the outside showers - so awesome!! The driveway down to the house is an adventure in itself - very narrow, bumpy, and curvy, but that's one reason when you get there you feel like you're on an island of your own! You'd probably better rent a 4 wheel drive car so you can avoid any difficulties. Driving on the left side of the road wasn't bad, but be prepared for the newness of that experience. Don was an excellent host, and quickly resolved the few problems which we experienced(all of which were beyond his control). I'd rate this one of our most enjoyable vacations ever. Remember that this is a perfect place for a laid back experience...basically paradise...no noise except for the sound of the birds and island critters, no traffic, no hustle bustle. A+

“Our Shangri-la”

This was the 2nd time we haved stayed at Donald's house, the first time for a week, this time for 2 weeks. We absolutely love this house & the very private location. None of us want to leave when we get there. It is so beautiful, the snorkeling is awesome & there is a peacefulness we haven't found anywhere else. The lovely well cared for houses give everyone their own private space & have everything you need onsite. We watched the sea turtles from the deck many times, the gila monsters were in the trees right off the deck, and the water was exquisite with beautiful fish & coral reefs. If you need a getaway place this is it! We will be back again.

“The best beach house”

There is nothing to add! If you are coming for the sea, the beach, the scenery, the tranquility, the place you can focus on yourself and your family only then this is it! Donald has provided us with the best service possible, attending to all the usual details, but also helping with all the unique requests.

“What a Great Place”

From the moment you arrive on St Thomas until you leave the service and the house are great. Donald will meet you at the airport, help with your car,and lead you to the house. The house is on a very private and secluded beach on the north side of St Thomas, directly across Crown Mnt. from the airport. The road to the house does require a Jeep or other suitable vehicle. My wife and I have stayed at The Beach House at least 6 times now and are really happy with everything. This is a very private property with a beach that has access only through this property or by boat. We have never had anyone on the beach when we were there. The main house is very well supplied with two bedrooms, the guest house has three bedrooms with outdoor showers which are really nice. The house keeper Gina and her husband Brian are great and will do shopping for you if want. The reef that extends from both sides of the beach is alive with coral and many different fish and the snorkeling is some of the best on St.Thomas. As I write this review we are preparing to visit the Beach House again, this time for an entire month. Donald, The Beach House, the beach,Gina and Brian are all wonderful. If privacy and a beautiful beach is your idea of a great vacation you will not regret a stay at the Beach House.
