“Our excellent Dominican Vacation”
Our family just spent a wonderful and relaxing week at the Villa. What's not to like? The house is roomy (4 bedrooms), spotlessly clean, well maintained, decorated beautifully in warm tropical colors and with authentic Dominican artwork, and best of all it sits right on the ocean in a gated community an easy drive from the Puerto Plata airport. The ocean view from the very private backyard is fantastic. A two minute walk brings you to a drop dead gorgeous crescent-shaped beach with calm shallow waters. Golf course and health club are right down the street. Any number of exceptional restaurants are a short drive away. Heartily recommend!
“Sweet vacation place!”
This was a wonderful, relaxing and secure place to stay. We liked it very much! We would rent again and usually we don't say that! It is as nice or better then the pictures. The place was very clean and kept up and the manager( a Dominican named Isidro) is sweet, watchful and immediately helpful. He met us there within 5 min. when we got there or would call with a question or prob. He even hooked us up with a friend who has a car rental place nearby. Recommendations are everything when you are in a foreign country! Allen the owner spent time explaining everything before we went and had recommendations too! He has been great to deal with! The home is very spacious and the master BR and one downstairs have a direct view of the ocean and the sound of ocean lapping up on the shore made sleeping a dream!!! Loved that feature alot! Being outdoors was wonderful, the backyard is well kempt and the foliage is lovely!! It is so close to the ocean! It is so relaxing and beautiful! The one and only downside is that the beach was not clean along that area. It is a bit of a cove and lots of seaweed comes up, and Dominicans had left quite abit of trash scattered. But there is a clean beach right around the corner where you can snorkel and swim; about 200 yards away. You cannot see it from the yard because of the foliage and small retaining wall. the area is safe and people are very friendly and nice.It is a real look at the DR life with the comforts of american life!
Response from the owner I am so happy that my home in Costambar lived up to your expectations and more. My staff and I understand the importance of excellence in customer service and Isidro and Maria-elena have provided friendly and excellent service to my rental guests for years. As you described so perfectly, the uniqueness of my house is that it is on the edge of the ocean and you truly can hear the wonderful ocean sounds. Sitting in our backyard is like sitting on the beach Hope to rent to you soon!
Wonderful 10 days at this safe and quiet house. This house will easily accommodate 7 to 8 people comfortably. The manager will check on you every couple of days to see if you need anything. The area is safe. Everything close and good priced. Just a pleasant place to hang out and watch the amazing ocean view and have no worries for your entire vacation stay. When I return this is where I'll stay.
Response from the owner Thank you for renting my house, I am so happy that my house and Costambar provided you with such a wonderful and relaxing vacation. I remember that you had two young children with you which underscores that Costambar is perfect for a family vacation. Our beach is a mile long and beautiful, but as you stated, there is a small cove area a distance away from our house where the ocean waves drop litter as a result of the ocean conditions. As you pointed out, we keep the beach behind my house clean so there are only beautiful views from every room in our house. My staff and I work very hard to provide my clients with comfortable and safe accommodations, and I am happy to hear that they were so attentive to your family. I am also glad that you enjoyed the great restaurants in Costambar especially the restaurants on the beach where you can eat and experience the "million dollar" views. I am looking forward to renting to you in the future,
“Great Place to visit”
The house was great--very comfortable and Isidro was very helpful. We elected to take a shuttle from Santo Domingo rather than driving ourselves (at allen's suggestion) and were glad we did as we would have gotten lost. The roads are in good shape but traffic is wild and the roads are not well-marked. Costambar is a quiet, friendly little community and we chose after arrival not to pick up our rental car. Taxis from the La Sirena (like a super-WalMart) in Puerto Plata were ~30 pesos and Yenny's in market is a super easy walk and has a lot of things. There are several restaurants (mostly Italian) in easy walking distance and a couple of beach bars with good fish. I thought the house was more attractive than the photos and I liked the fact that we could leave the windows open and hear the ocean at night --very nice with breezes and very secure. The neighborhood feels very safe and people are friendly. I would return here if I come back to the DR. I recommend using Iguana Mama to go see the Damajagua falls (37 Charcos) and we did a fun half-day, low-key mountain bike ride with them as well which was fun.
Response from the owner I am so happy that you enjoyed your stay in Costambar. Our seaside village is very special because it provides all the amenities for a wonderful vacation without the "crowded in" feeling that is often experienced at the all inclusive hotels. Our beach is never crowded and the many restaurants on the beach in our community offer good food with reasonable prices, Our community board works hard to keep Costambar safe. My manager Isidro and my staff work very hard to make sure our guests are comfortable in my house. I am very glad that you took my suggestions and enjoyed some of my recommended day trips. The North coast of the DR is so beautiful.
“A World Traveler's opinion - it's better than described”
I travel a lot for work; in 30 years I've stayed in everything you can imagine; Four Seasons in Italy, Maui resorts, villas in the Caribbean, hammocks in Mexico. This was perfect to make our vacation whatever we wanted. The 1 review about the rundown community was misleading. This is the DR, not Florida. Please, if that's what you expect, go there and don't give americans more of a bad reputation than we already have. Yes, you'll see some vacant buildings, quaint restaurants and beautiful homes. The DR is a developing country, and if you want to be a good citizen of our World, show some respect for that. There are poor areas (I didn't really see that), but I've seen much, much worse in Mexico, Dominica, St. Thomas, and Barbados. It's just... different. The owner was excellent, the house is nicer than the pics. Weather - perfect every day. "Beachfront" means 1 step from the backyard to the beach; quiet, not deserted. 2 min. walk to slightly more populated beach; little restaurants, thatched-roof palapas, great swimming. Great for kids, swim in the easily identified white-sand areas (bring a mask/snorkel and you'll easily identify where coral and sea urchins are further out). The gated community is safe, several English-speaking restaurants/shops. You could spend your entire time without leaving, but if that's your plan... go to Florida, please. We explored every day. If you haven't traveled much outside your country, but want to experience something idyllic, slightly exotic, and relatively quiet, this may be a good place to start. Just use your head and do some research. And if you have traveled, enjoy. A big smile and "Hola" goes a long way. A little Spanish helps tremendously. Mine was rusty, but when seeking directions in Puerto Plata, a shop owner walked us two blocks to the store I was looking for, and left me with a warm smile and a handshake. When was the last time that happened to you in the States?
We enjoyed our 10 day vacation in Costambar. The house is quite large and has a gorgeous view. Two of the bedrooms face east so you can watch the sunrise from your bedroom window! The house is very secure, neighbors friendly and helpful, the manager and house staff is very attentive. Inside the community there are several restaurants, small market, golf course, spa, and beautiful beach. You wouldn't need to venture outside of the community if he didn't want to. If you do, however, Puerto Plata is a busy little community filled with small time entrepreneurs. Your adventures can consist of lots of day trips that will provide you with history (Columbus' first settlement) and social activities (casino and dancing). Note: brush up on your Spanish or download a translation app to make communication easier during your stay.
“Quaint villa on the beach with privacy and relaxation”
As described with excellent owner communication. Greeted by local property manager who checked in several times during the week. Cleaning service twice during week kept things clean with fresh towels. Easy to get around the small town/village by foot. Taxis readily available for further day trips. Local market with delivery. Good restaurants within walking. Comfortable home for four looking for R&R.; Great that you were on the beach for breezes, easy access to public beach. Would recommend for couples...may need a car with teenagers to go to places. Family oriented beach would be fine for children.
“Beautiful house on the ocean in Costambar, Dominican Republic”
We recently rented this beautiful house in Costambar, Dominican Republic for our family. Since it was our first trip to the Dominican Republic, we weren't sure what to expect. But the owner was very helpful about providing restaurant recommendations, information about the area and giving us some ideas for day trips. He arranged to have the manager meet us at the house when we arrived, which was a nice touch. The house itself was perfect for us, with a big master bedroom that has a nice view of the ocean, and rooms for each of our two children. The house was painted with tropical colors and big enough that we had a lot of room to spread out. The property was right on the edge of the ocean, and the views were really special. The main beach was a short walk from the house. The beach was nice and had a long shallow slope which was perfect for the kids. We rented lounge chairs for a couple dollars a day, and spent many wonderful hours relaxing on the beach. There were a couple of good beach restaurants for lunch, and Pina Coladas in the afternoon. Costambar was not fancy or touristy, but it offered everything we needed for a relaxing and affordable vacation.
Response from the owner Thank you for your comments. I am very pleased that you had such a great experience on your first trip to the DR. We strive to make our guest feel comfortable in our house and we are pleased that you enjoyed the relaxed feel of Costambar.
“Great house, but - A word of warning about Costambar”
First, the house itself - it is wonderful. Very clean, bright, and cheerful. The ocean breeze makes the lack of air conditioning on the main level a non-issue. The property manager, Isidro, is fantastic - he caters to all requests promptly and with a friendly smile. The beach that the house is on, however, is not swimmable - it is narrow and seaweed-clogged. You will need to walk along the main road for 5 mins to get to the beach. The development that the house is in, Costambar, though - deserves a clear warning for others considering this location. If you like to steer clear of crowds, in that respect Costambar fits the bill. However we were somewhat taken aback by the run-down nature of what is supposed to be a "gated community" - the abandoned hotel buildings, open piles of trash everywhere, "for sale" signs all over. The whole place has a real sense of decay about it, like a place whose best days are well behind it. The diamond in the rough is the club house (Los Mangos), which is fantastic - clean, beautiful pool, great food, etc. If you are considering this rental - go with an open mind about Costambar itself, and you will not be disappointed.
Response from the owner We are pleased that this family enjoyed our beautiful house. As reviewed, our house is very comfortable, relaxing and full of beautiful colors and wonderful views. We have a terrific staff, and are pleased that our manager, Isidro, played an important role in making them comfortable in our house. The uniqueness of Costambar is that it is not touristy, yet Costambar has everything you need for a relaxing vacation: great beach, local restaurants, country-like walking areas, security, tennis, golf and many other amenities including our clients’ use of the facilities of the Los Mangos Country club. Clients who stay at our home enjoy the outstanding views of the ocean from every room, as well as when sitting on lounges in our backyard. Being adjacent to a small, natural beach, which is also a coastal tidal point, guarantees no swimming crowds, but offers maximum ocean/beach views and cool breezes. Yet a very short stroll will bring you to the maintained main beach area. Costambar is a special destination, but unfortunately like other Caribbean countries, it has felt some real estate consequences of the global economic crisis. Our community association is diligently working to keep Costambar clean and beautiful. Additionally, Costambar is international in every sense; a place where one meets Dominicans, Americans, Italians, Canadians, Germans and people from many other countries, who contribute to its daily life. Costambar is not for everyone, but it certainly has so much to offer those who want a relaxed, inexpensive authentic Caribbean vacation. The owners
“The best most relaxing and fun vacation.”
Our group vacationed for two weeks at the end of February, this year and consisted of 2 adult couples. Costambar was perfect, very relaxing and user friendly. The Villa we stayed in was everything it was said to be, great location, very clean and plenty of room. Costambar has lots of good, inexpensive restaurants within walking distance and on the beach. The main supermarket has what you need if you choose to cook at home, which we did on a few nights. The people of Dominican Republic are very friendly. The manager and the maid service that we had were very thorough and kept things up to par. Although we spent most of our time on the beautiful beach, a nice amenity was the ability to use the pool the gym and the golf course at the Los Mangos Country club which is about a 15 minute walk from the house. This was a great vacation spot and not only would I recommend this to my family and friends but I will be back. Thanks for everything.
