Description from owner

The mill is a magical hilltop haven, a beautiful and unique private home that is occasionally let to the lucky traveller seeking something private, secluded and special. Perfect for couples escaping for a romantic break and families alike. Flipkey Top Vacation Rental Winner 2013, 2012 and 2011. Selected by TripAdvisor as the 2011 number 1 Unique Holiday Rental and voted number 3 in the World's Top 10 Quirky Holiday Rentals 2010.

The grounds of the mill are divided into different garden areas with 3 different dining areas where you can enjoy or avoid the sun at your leisure or swim in a wonderful bio-pool.

A sand terrace surrounds half the mill, perfect for relaxing, doing a spot of Yoga, (mat supplied) or letting children run free, or for a good game of Petanque. There's a tree swing, and a tree chair and a hammock slung between an almond and an olive tree.

The bio-pool (8m x 3m) is 2m deep and perfect for a cooling swim. The pool is chemical free and filtered by a water garden of aquatic plants. It was designed in partnership with the designer behind the award winning pool at Hampton Court. There is free wifi, books, a well stocked DVD library, a PS3, cards and boardgames, binoculars, body boards, balls and lots more for guests to enjoy. A welcome pack of local wine and food greets every guest so you can arrive unprepared and not worry. Also there's a detailed information pack full of useful information.

Situated in an ecological reserve the mill stands on a hill overlooking the plains that roll their way from the Atlantic coast to the Spanish border. Tucked away near the delightful village of Santa Luzia, between the historic town of Ourique and the picturesque Odemira the mill may be secluded but it is not isolated. The mill is a perfect base for birdwatching, cycling, stargazing, walking, horse riding and exploring. It is just a ten minute walk to the local village shops and restaurant, and a fifteen minute drive to the nearest town, banks and supermarkets etc. Fabulous beaches are 30 minutes away and wonderful lakes are much closer, and great walks straight from the back door. It's also the ultimate retreat for those wanting to get away from it all.

Very Good

“Unforgetteable place”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2014

This is a beautiful place to rest and enjoy nature. All tips received from Mark (managing the mill) were excellent and ver helpul. All the restaurants you find around are exquisite and cheap to eat. Ours were beach vacation and needed to take car everyday, about 40 min to get the beach. Anyway it is perfect for interior, gastronomic tourism. Really good experience.

“Stunning location and great area to explore”

Reviewed 8 Oct 2013

Enjoyed an absolutely wonderful stay at the Mill in September 2013. The views from the property are truly amazing, you can see for miles around. One of the highlights of the stay was watching an electric storm roll in down the valley. Other than the storm, the weather was still scorching in September with the breeze on the hill providing welcome relief. Also stunning atlantic beaches within easy reach and plenty of other areas to explore. Portuguese people were amazingly friendly and it is all a world away from the tourism of the algarve. Great place for a relaxing stay or a base for wider exploration of the real Portugal.

“Beautiful, Peaceful and Fun”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2013

When you first arrive at the Mill (having tackled the slightly daunting drive up the hill) the first thing that strikes you is how stunning the views are and how well the Mill fits in. It is truly a beautiful location and the mill does it justice with charming, well-kept and practical accommodation. We had asked Mark in advance to set up the Mill ready to accommodate 3 families and everything was exactly as we had hoped. The directions and information provided was really helpful and the beach Mark recommends is truly one of the best we have ever been to. The Mill has everything you could need to enjoy a really peaceful and relaxing holiday. But it also provides a lot of fun. There are lots of toys and games for the kids and many hours were spent playing in the sand or the pool. On the practical front the Mill had everything you could need (although all we really needed was the BBQ) and we loved the fact that the Mill is self-sufficient. I can't recommend the Mill to highly. My personal favourite moment was cuddling up in a blanket at night and looking at the milky way (which was visible). Thank you Mark and Rachel for a wonderful holiday!!!

“Helpful and friendly”

Due to an accident, I could no longer travel to the mill, so I can't actually comment on the accommodation. However, Mark was really understanding, provided a full and prompt refund - it was all quite pain free (unlike my shoulder). I look forward to trying to get there again in the future!

“What a fabulous place !!!”

Reviewed 11 Jul 2012

Fabulous and totally unique. We had a wonderful stay, with views of the alentejo countryside that must be unrivalled. Extremely comfortable, clean and well appointed. Lots of info on where to eat, swim, shop etc, but after a busy week in Lisbon we were more than happy to just spend our week relaxing at the mill. We caught quite a breezy week, but then I suppose you don't build a windmill where there's no wind !! That did not affect our enjoyment one bit. Excellent information and assistance from the considerate owners. Definitely to be recommended.

In a nutshell...Eden, the property, location and whole vibe of the Mill was amazing. As I work offshore as a diver it took a great deal of planning, flights, hire car etc but all the planning was well well worth it. I had gotten in Contact with Mark [the owner] and arranged a real surprise for my partner there, he provided the flowers, bubbly and rose petals on the bed in the amazing attic bedroom, I was to propose to my partner on arrival. Nothing was too much trouble for him and the house keeper Louise, they helped in everyway, the perfect hosts. The Mill was amazing, the drive up the hill to be greeted by that white tower was a view that will stay with myself and Leighannes memory for ever. The amenities and surroundings were breathtaking, clean, all mod cons, everything you would ever need, your own little kingdom. We sampled many resturants nearby, all were fantastic value for money and great fun, on occations we cooked in, barbies etc washed down with plenty of fantastc wine, half hour away are the most clean, gorgeous beaches you will ever want, most you have to yoursef. It was an amzing experience, memorable, gorgeous and so so special. Mark and Laura can be so proud of that little Eden they have created. We are proud to be a part of the Mills history now and it will always be a part of us forever. We are already planning our return. Oh...and by the way she said yes ...

“Peace and quiet with spectacular views”

Reviewed 11 May 2012

Despite having looked at lots of photographs before going, I was not prepared for the reality. I could spend days just sitting and looking and listening to the birds, just occasionally moving around to get a different perspective. But it was also great to go out - walking and sightseeing - eating out or buying food to cook in - a delightful untouristy area. And the mill itself was glorious and comfortable, with the owner having thought so carefully about what we might want or need.

“360 Degrees of Peace and Harmony”

Reviewed 29 Apr 2012

The Herons on the Telegraph Poles tell you both that you are nearly there, and that it is going to be glorious... and there it is on its own Hill with a 360 degee view of this lovely quiet farming basin. On top of the world. Inside, exactly what was needed, everything there for comfort, and for eating in... saucepans..frying pans... caffetier. Great roomy bathroom, stoves for the evenings in the sitting room and kitchen-dinning area- no need the day, even in February. Fabulous "loft" major bedroom, lovely guest room and smashing sitting room on the first floor, all there, and all very much reflecting itself, a mill. Delightful. We eat out twice in the local restaurants, great food in good traditional local style, low key,no frills, and all the better for it.Took one trip out, to Evora, absolutely fascinating, and the only bit of "tourism " for the whole stay. I was very contented with the immediate vicinity of the mill for gentle strolls and exploring, and the mill and it's walled garden for peace, quiet and lunches in its various sitting areas. Fabulous.I shall be there again, and possibly just a little later to catch the glory of the Spring flowers.

“Amazing place to stay in alentejo!”

Reviewed 6 Apr 2012

I stayed at the mill for a few days with a friend and I must say it was one of the best places and experiences I've ever had. Quiet, lovely and sunny during the day and amazing skies at night, never seen so many stars! I recommend eating in the outdoor table any of the great cheeses and wines from the area and then relax enjoying the sunset. Highly recommended for those looking for a different experience in Portugal and who value staying in a unique place.

“Truly unique and charming location.”

Reviewed 16 Feb 2012

You won't ever find a place the same as the Mill on the Hill. It has immense character and it's location is breathtaking. In particular it will suit the adventurous and those seeking out a bit of fun. Eating out in this area is simple but very acceptable - and offers extremely good value for money. The comfort of the bed exceeded that experienced in the Pousada we last stayed in. A really excellent region for walking and star gazing if those activities interest you. You will be rewarded for being up to observe the sunrise and sunset but that will depend on the time of year that you visit!
