“A place in nature with personality”

Reviewed 24 Dec 2014

We liked Camp Au Sable very much. We spend a week there and loved the views (everywhere), the animals (we saw dear every day, wild turkeys with chicks and a lot of birds, the silence (we were concerned of noise from the road on the other side of the river, but it was not a problem) and our kids loved the room upstairs which quickly became no-adults zone. We also enjoyed the house with all it's personality. This is clearly not created as a rental. The house was well equipped and everything worked, even though we had a little trouble with all the different light switches. But also the communication with Annie worked perfect all the way. Finally I want to mention the view from the master bedroom. Fireflies at night and wildlife in the morning - a very nice way to wake up. Annie has by far been the most friendly host we ever have encountered, always ready with a sound advice regarding activities, the house, or surroundings. Thanks you so much for a wonderful stay.

Response from the owner Thank you so much for your positive review. True, it is quite an idyllic and unique place. Some of the people in the surrounding villages who are used to driving by the expansive field call it a zoo because of the animals you see constantly if you know how to look carefully. As for the automatic electric gadgetry, we are planning to improve it some time soon. So, if ever you come back, you should not have any problem figuring out how to find the switches in the dark. It was a pleasure hosting you and your family and I do hope we have a chance to meet again either in North America or in Europe.

We stayed here the first week of September 2013, just before school started again. This place was exactly what we needed. We live in Manhattan and this is place is the opposite in so many aspects. It's quiet and peaceful. While we had dinner on the porch we saw deers in the field. Our kids, 3 and 5, also loved this place. The owners provided with a small electrical kids car that was widely used. House is very clean and tidy. Lake Placid and Whiteface mountain are close by.

Response from the owner Hello Andre, Going over the reviews for our little cottage, it looks like I didn't respond to your kind words. That could not be. In any case, let me respond once more if I, in fact, did. All kids love that little electrical car. I was a bit reluctant at first to let your kids have it as I was worried about potential mishaps. It is so much fun for the kids and the adults as well that I think you have to be willing to take calculated risks. The noise probably scared the deer away, but the kids will probably remember that little car for quite some time. So, if you ever come back, the little electrical car will be there for them. Have a great winter. Annie

“A charming cottage in a great location”

Reviewed 10 Aug 2013

We spent a wonderful week at ausable Camp enjoying the beauty of the scenery, the quietness of the woods, and the comfort of the cottage. The cottage is set in a beautiful location in the middle of a field, surrounded by forest, with a river in walking distance and views on the mountains close by. Wildlife also seems to like this spot so that you'd be able to observe deer and wild turkey. Inside, the cottage is cosy and charming with big windows, wooden decor and a fully functional kitchen. The perfect place to relax after a day of hiking, canoing or swimming! Annie Mear, the owner, was extremely helpful and did everything she could to make sure we were at ease at the cottage and had sufficient information on the cottage and the area.

Response from the owner Hi Maike, My apologies for not responding sooner to your very thoughtful review. When you embark in a rental transaction, there is a reciprocal risk for the renter as well as the owner. If you give our little cottage a 5 star appreciation, you and your party certainly deserve just as many stars for being perfect renters. I will make sure to take that into consideration if you ever decide to stay at our little cottage again. I wish you a very pleasant fall season. Annie

It would be hard to imagine a better place to stay for a few days in the High Peaks than this fully equipped, idiosyncratic cottage. We were there in high winter, with snow on the ground outside, temps in the 0 to 20 range, and x-country skiing right out the front door. An extremely romantic place to be, with fireplace, stacked cordwood, a bedroom looking out over a snowy field, and all the amenities one might need to cook up a storm. Anne Mear, the owner, prepared everything for us, down to the linens and firewood, and even left us a bottle of wine! She was a delight, and someone you can trust. She prefaced the entire weekend with a warning about needing 4-wheel drive to negotiate the short road leading into the property. Duly noted. But under the mild conditions we faced, and our expert driver at the wheel, not too much of a challenge. A more romantic and memorable few days I could not possibly have expected. Highly recommended, as long as you want to be in your own place, off to the side a bit. And check out the funky lighting system, with a mind of its own!

Response from the owner Thanks so much for your very kind works and your very thorough review. Nothing escaped your keen sense of observation. Your piqued my husband's knack for electronic gadgetry with your comment about his "funky lighting system, with a mind of its own". Next time you come, I am sure the funky little system will have been modernized. That in itself might be worth another trip. Looking forward to welcome you again.

“Fantastic Voyage!”

Greetings fellow travellers: My girlfriend and I just returned from a long weekend at this house and it was one of the best breaks we're had in a looong time. The house is in a remote area surrounded by mountains, and in a field that is about 150 acres. The house is also in top shape with every amenity and the owners are very nice and have thought of every possibility. I strongly recommend it -- we will be coming back here again! Bon voyage -- GT

Response from the owner Thank you for your kind words about our little cottage. You certainly were also the perfect guest for the house. I'll make sure to take that into account if you ever decide to come back to our little house in the prairie. Annie

“Perfect getaway !!”

Charming cottage in a tranquil setting surrounded by the beautiful adirondacks countryside Well presented with modern facilities but still has full of character ideally situated to explore all that the area has to offer: Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain, many of the most beatiful High Peaks. At the end of the long day of hiking, we enjoyed staying on the nice large terrace and watch the animals go for a drink in the nearby river!!

Response from the owner Thanks so much for your positive review. Anne

“Awsome location right on the ausable River”

Reviewed 10 May 2011

We love auSable Camp. Great location. Extreme cleanliness. My wife and I have been on repeated visits to the cottage over the years. The place is ideal for us (couple with two children in their teens). Lots of place around for the kids to play. Complete privacy. The views from the house are stunning. Very well equipped kitchen. There is no TV connection but you can bring your own movies on DVD to run on the DVD player connected to the flat screen. The best show in the place however is watching the deer grazing in the big field from the porch at sunset. The cottage is located minutes away from all the trail heads for the high peaks, Whiteface mountain and many of the attractions around Lake Placid.

Response from the owner Thank you very much for your positive review.. Anne
