“No frills, slightly shabby, but cosy - "What tower?"”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2016

We've been going to Emerald Isle for decades, first with my family, with my siblings and their kids, and this time, just us three. We've stayed up and down Ocean, on the beach or in the next row. The beach is the focus, as are the visits to the go-cart track and Dairy Queen. Where we stay is no longer as important as having enough room for us all. What Tower fills that bill. It is comfortable, with some touch of shabbiness. Doors stick. Deck furniture is falling apart. I think we found bed-bugs in a down-stairs mattress. But the TV is big, important in early August with the Olympics on. Electric range. Mismatched glassware, plates, flatware, pots, pans and the like. Standard Emerald Isle vacation rental. Not top tier, but not a hut.

Response from the manager Thank you for your review of your stay at What Tower? I’m happy to know that What Tower? accommodated your family so nicely, and that you found everything you needed to have a comfortable and enjoyable stay in Emerald Isle. Thank you for letting us know about your concern of bed bugs. I am pleased to let you know that our housekeeping director, who is highly trained in the identification, treatment, and prevention of bed bugs, thoroughly checked the property and each of the beds, and she found no evidence of bed bugs. I hope you and your family will revisit Emerald Isle soon and book What Tower? with confidence.

“I Say, What Tower?”

Reviewed 5 Jul 2016

The tower is an excellent landmark and in no way a detriment to the cottage. Two old couples enjoyed the cottage, one thinking the downstairs bedroom perfect because of being darker; one finding the upper bedrooms preferable because of the light. The front deck and the upper living area have practically unobstructed views of the ocean. The stairs are a bit tricky - narrow and no grab bar, but we managed with little trouble. The steps down to Ocean Drive were being overgrown, but we were able to duck and dodge the vines. Everything in the kitchen was so tidy, with all the expected items plus a spice rack with lots of offerings. All in all it was a delightful experience.

“Towering Experience”

What Tower is our annual retreat center, a well-kept, comfortable, no-frills but constantly evolving place to enjoy the beach, the sun, the pelicans, and the books of a summer vacation. I recommend this highly to any family looking to enjoy a peaceful, easy feeling, Emerald Isle-style!

“Good time had by all.”

We enjoyed our stay at What Tower?. It was our first stay at this property. The only thing that was a problem was the hike to the beach. There is no real beach access, except people-made across the street up a dune. This was after going down the hill from the property. It was diffcult for us because we had three children, two under the age of 2 so they had to be carried across to the beach. Otherwise, we had a nice stay.

“It was great!”

The location was great-easy walk to the beach. the house was clean-one complaint, we started seeing bugs towards the last few days of our stay, otherwise we liked the house and location.

“Wonderful”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2009

We really liked this house. It was in such great shape and nicely decorated. The location is fine since the beach access is quite close. The only complaint we have is that we reported a problem with the refrigerator and were told a service repairman would be there soon. No one ever showed up and we reported it 2 more times.

“What Tower (of Love)?”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2009

This is about the 11th or 12th year we've stayed at What Tower at 704 Ocean Drive. We love everything about it -- from the 2nd floor porch with a good view of the ocean, to the 1st floor porch that gets us out of the sun and allows us to read in the morning and have coffee. With four bedrooms and three baths, it's the perfect size for our family, and every year Joe the owner seems to add some nice new touches (we love your smiling family pictures Joe!). It has quick access to the beach, and with the water Tower that gives the house its clever name, we can always find our wonderful home away from home at Emerald Isle.
