Very Good

“Emerald Isle Rental agency was great...This Cottage was horrible”

Reviewed 4 Oct 2013

Emerald Isle Rental agency was friendly and pleasant to deal with. But this cottage was filthy dirty, outdated, in need of repair to basic things like shower facilities, dishwasher, dryer, wall repairs, furniture...anything that made you feel comfortable and on vacation. We had to do our own cleaning job before we settled in for the week. If we would have been there with children it would have been more miserable. The boardwalk/deck area was dangerous with protruding nails, narrow walk area, and dangerous steps. Our brother-in-law had an accident on the steps that resulted in a trip to urgent care the first day we were there. He spent the week recuperating with two swollen ankles, broken/dislocated toes, bruised ribs, and lacerations on the arms. We would strongly suggest travel insurance if you were to stay here! We loved the beach!

Response from the manager Thank you for your review. We were terribly sorry to hear of the injury your brother in law sustained. The deck at this property was inspected and repaired/replaced as needed. Other refurbishments since your stay include: New mattresses and box springs, new furnishings (living rooms, dining rooms, and most bedrooms), flat screen HDTVs have been added, the kitchen now has granite counter tops, new sliding door and blinds, new bed coverings, lamps, and artwork, new carpet, bathrooms now have granite counter tops, and Calypso was painted inside and out. Thank you again for your feedback. Again, we were so sorry to hear of the injury that took place during your vacation and hope your next visit to Emerald Isle will be filled with nothing but happy moments with your family.

“Great beach access...but needs to be updated”

Reviewed 27 Jul 2013

My family has visited Emerald Isle for years so we are familiar with the area and would recommend it to others interested in a family vacation location. We have also rented through Emerald Isle Realty and would rent through them again. The property, Calypso, had great beach access that we thoroughly enjoyed, but the furnishings and accomodations need to be updated. We would probably look elsewhere before renting this property again. Two families, seven in total, stayed at the property for a week. We were looking for a property in this area in order to be close to other family members in a different house on the street. We wanted second row, but by the time we went to reserve the location beach side was all that was available. We found Calypso on-line and thought it would meet our purposes. Check in was effortless and the property was available and clean right on time. We noticed ants in the kitchen and called and left a message for pest service. The same day we told the maintenance man when he stopped by to check in to replace a light bulb. The maintenance man was very courteous and returned the same day to spray for the ants. A pest service also came by later the same day. While we noticed a few more ants during the week, for the most part the problem was resolved to our satisfaction. We enjoy the beach and spend most of our time outside so while it is nice to have a TV if you need it we used them rarely. We would have preferred to have internet access, but it was not available. To be fair, it was not advertised, but I think it follows the theme of a nice location in need of some serious updating. The house phone did not work. The maintenance man investigated and determined the line to the house needed to be repaired. We were able to get a dial tone, but the connection was so bad the phone was not useable. This was not a major detractor since we all had cell phones. We would have traded for internet access!

Response from the manager Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It pleases me to let you know that Calypso has been refurbished for the current vacation season, 2014. Updates include: New mattresses and box springs, new furnishings (living rooms, dining rooms, and most bedrooms), flat screen HDTVs have been added, the kitchen now has granite counter tops, new sliding door and blinds, new bed coverings, lamps, and artwork, new carpet, bathrooms now have granite counter tops, and Calypso was painted inside and out. I hope you and your family will revisit Emerald Isle and give Calypso another try as there simply is no room for disappointment. Please call us to make your reservations - 1-888-832-0140.

“a wonderful family vacation”

Reviewed 13 Jun 2013

Our family has been coming to Emerald Isle since the 1980's. My parents started this tradition and have now passed away. I continued to bring my family to your wonderful area. This year for the first time my husband came with us. His second day there he was already planning next year's vacation. Growing up he always went to Mytle Beach with his parents and really didn't like it. He fell in love with Emerald Island. We stayed for the 2nd time at Calypso and love it. The only thing I would do to improve the house is to provide pillows and blankets for the trundle bed and the sleeper sofas. We were provided sheets but no pillows and blankets. We love the area and would recommend it to everyone we know. Any problems we had, maintenance was there right away. Wonderful service, wonderful home and wonderful vacation.

Response from the manager How great that your parents started such a wonderful family vacation tradition with you so many years ago and it has become something you can share with your family. Being a family owned company, stories like yours are near and dear to Emerald Isle Realty. Thank you for sharing and please let us know when we can start planning your next vacation - 1-888-832-0140.

“Great Views but only a Decent House”

Reviewed 8 Oct 2012

The ocean views, the gazebo, the back deck of Calypso made our stay! All in our family would agree with the Sept 12th review where it was stated "The place is well equipped. There is plenty of room there. Furnishings aren't that bad. However, the flooring needs work; those carpets are absolutely gross." We would also state, in agreement with some of the other reviewers of Calypso, the mattresses do need some upgrading especially the King bed. For what you pay to stay there, we think many small things should be resolved immediately or discount the house so you are paying the lower end price for the lower end amenities. With the price lowered we would stay at this home a second time. Again; the views from Calypso were fantastic and made our stay!

Response from the manager Thank you for your feedback. I am pleased to let you know that since your stay Calypso has been refurbished inside and out! The owners of this home have replaced the mattresses and box springs, added new furnishings, repaired/replaced decks and windows, added HDTVs, upgraded kitchen and baths with granite counter tops, added plantation blinds and replaced other window treatments, replaced carpet and bedding throughout, and the interior and exterior has been painted. I hope you and your family will revisit Calypso and enjoy all of the new features of this property.

“Not that bad...”

Reviewed 20 Sep 2012

I read the reviews but when you book the trip 10 days in advance, beggars can't be choosers. The place is well equipped. There is plenty of room there. Furnishings aren't that bad. However, the flooring needs work; those carpets are absolutely gross. It's a real shame that renters don't treat the place as if it was their own. The mattresses do need some upgrading - then again, I sleep on a Sleep Number bed so maybe my expectations are too high. There is a box spring and 2 mattresses on one of the first floor beds which causes the top mattress to slip off the bed. Besides that, the top mattress seems wider than the others making it difficult to get in the bed. I didn't think maintenance did a bad job. I called because the first floor bathtub wasn't draining properly and the response was very timely. Everything was fixed that morning. The location is great. You can't beat right on the beach. The deck is super although the very bottom handrails will need replacing in the short term. Also, unlike other parts of EI, we weren't chewed up by the mosquitos--that was really nice! I think the cleaning staff needs to step it up. We always tip the cleaning staff...not this time. There was trash under the living room furniture which we spotted while walking up the steps. The doorknob was about to fall off but luckily my husband had a few tools with him and made the repair. Also, the bedroom with the bunk beds must not get used very often because it smelled "dusty" as if it hadn't been cleaned/vacuumed. For what you pay to stay there, I think the landlord should be able to hire a much more competent cleaning staff. So, in short, a really good cleaning and some new rugs would do wonders for the place.

Response from the manager Thank you for sharing your experience and suggestions with us. I'm happy to know that you enjoyed your vacation at Calypso and hope you'll return soon. I have passed your feedback on to our housekeeping department so they can be sure the items you mentioned aren't overlooked again. “Everything was great except for the weather :-)”

Reviewed 6 Sep 2012

Everything was very well organized, easy to get keys, rooms good, bathrooms outdated, but good and clean.

Response from the manager Thank you for your review of your stay at Calypso. I'm happy that you found our procedures to be simple and enjoyed your time at this Oceanfront home. Hopefully the weather will cooperate better for your next Emerald Isle vacation. Please call us when you begin making plans for your next stay and we'll happily reserve Calypso for you again - 1-888-832-0140.

“Extremely Disappointing”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2012

This is the eighth house I have rented in EI and have never been more unimpressed. Several lights out, rugs and furntiture dirty, food left in cabinets. Dishwasher useless, thus dishes, glasses and silverware caked with dirt. Linens from previous renter sat in the driveway during our entire stay. No Wifi (this is 2012). Bottom line is that Emerald Isle Realty plays the role of slum lord with this property. It is a crime what is charged because it is beach front. Amenities do not match weekly rental rates. I have stayed in houses very near to Calypso and paid about the same. Those houses were castles compared to this one. Have tried contacting EI Realty more that once via their on-line email portal with no reply. Will not recommend nor rent from EI Realty again.

“The most relaxing and enjoyable week !!!”

Reviewed 21 May 2012

All our expierence was wonderful the staff were most helpful in making our stay exactly what we were looking for! The house was perfect met all our needs! My favorite part was getting to see the dolphins go by daily in the morning and then again in the evening!!

Response from the manager Thank you for your review of your stay at Calypso. Dolphins frolicking in the surf is one of the best things about being at the beach. I'm so glad you got to see that and enjoyed your stay at this home. Please call us when you begin making plans for your next vacation and we'll happily assist you in planning - 1-888-832-0140.

“It was a pretty good experience.”

Reviewed 25 Aug 2011

I was a little disappointed in the house. It looks quite worn since we stayed there 6 or 7 years ago. The house's layout is good with the four bedroom windows facing the ocean so the sounds of the surf at night is great. The enclosed deck provided an excellent play area for our 2 year old granddaughter and the gazebo was a welcomed relief from the hot sun.

Response from the manager Thank you for your review of your stay at Calypso. I agree that this home provides the excellent location where you can enjoy the island and all it has to offer. I'm sorry you were disappointed in the appearance of this home. I'll happily pass on your comments to the owner so they can take them into consideration should they decide to refurbish their home. Thank you again for providing you feedback. Please call us when you're ready to book your next trip to the Crystal Coast - 1-888-832-0140.

“Plain on the outside, but better on the inside”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2011

This house actually worked out great for our family. It isn't pretty from the outside, but the inside works surprisingly well and was very, very clean. We needed maintenance for a few items and the response was beyond excellent. The location was perfect and we really enjoyed the gazebo/table on the walkway to the beach. The description said it came with a gas grill, but there was only a charcoal grill underneath. We ended up grilling only once or twice because it takes so long to heat up the grill and it isn't convenient to get to. We usually love to grill for lunch, as well as, most dinners. We missed that! The most important thing is that the house really, really needs to have Internet access - we felt like we were in the dark ages for a week. We would rent it again if only it had a gas grill and internet capability.
