“Probably the best villa on Ko Mak”
We stayed for 6 nights, 3 adults and 2 small kids and we loved it. It was one of the best accomodations in Thailand we ever found. It's spacious enough for 3 couples with kids and has extra bedding and plenty of space. The value for money is amazing, it's got everything you need plus some extra things like wifi and internet tv. All the rooms are decorated nicely and they feel like a home not a hotel room. The first and second levels have really cool terraces where you can sit and relax. We also found the villa to be safe for the kids, stairs and terraces are fenced properly so they can't fall out. :) There's a nice lady with a taxi, you will receive her phone number and she takes you anywhere on the island for 100-150 baht per trip (not per person.) There are beaches to be reached on foot but I recommend taking the taxi to ones which we found better like: Seavana and White Sand beach. Once again the place is amazing, above and beyond anything you would expect for this budget. Highly recommended.
Response from the owner Thank you so much for this. It has made me feel it's all worth while. I've been lucky to have recently had two of the best sets of guests I've ever had. It has been a real pleasure. I'm encouraged to keep working on making the villa as pleasurable to stay in as possible. Many thanks, and best wishes.
We were looking for something more aesthetically pleasing, well designed and luxurious. This place was not quite that but it was pretty good if those things are not important. This villa was broken up in three levels which were all outside access only. The top level has a great bedroom and you walk out onto a gazebo which has a great view of the beautiful grounds. This is the best feature of the house. The bathroom off of this bedroom is ok but they slapped a cheap version of a shower in overtop of existing windows and used a corrugated plastic board as the surround we also had to fix the draining issue. The main level was our daughters bedroom and it was also the closest thing to a common area, unfortunately for her. This villa did lack a comfortable main common area for all of us to be in. The lighting in the place (coloured plastic fixtures) were really harsh. The lowest level was the kitchen and not so nice bedroom (which was also a little musty so we didn't much use). The biggest disappointment was the fact that this place did not have a pool. Considering how hot is was in March we really needed a pool each afternoon. ( The beaches also had sand fleas) There were pictures on their website of a pool and we were led to believe that they had an arrangement with a neighbouring resort to use theirs but this was not the case. We ended up going for a bite & drink at Koh Mak resort and using their pool which was the nicest one we found. The man taking care of the villa, Mr Ball, is really a lovely person and although we didn't need to bother him much he was very helpful and doing some great things for the community of Koh Mak.
Response from the owner Dear Guest First, let me thank you for taking the time to write your review, it's much appreciated. I totally accept your comments on the top-floor shower cubicle, the furnishing, lighting and general layout of the middle floor, and the unaired ground floor bedroom. All of these I will address when I return in July, if not sooner. As for the pool issue, obviously this is a difficult area. I am not part of Goodtime Resort, though I am situated right in the middle of it, so I don't have use of the pool, as stated on the website. I had made an arrangement with the Manager of the nearest resort (Coco Cape) to use their pool, but it seems this agreement somehow got either suspended or otherwise dishonoured in this instance, though I don't think the Manager was aware of it. I've not heard back from other guests regarding this, so I will endeavour to seek clarification when I return. In the long term, I am going to be looking at constructing my own pool, as I am aware it would make an enormous difference to many guests - if not all. After all that, I do really appreciate your feedback. As you may have noticed, I haven't collected any reviews for some time, so this is a very welcome "wake up" call. Many thanks, Brad.
“Gorgeous, spacious house with beautiful gardens, pool & views!”
I stayed here with my family for two weeks over December (2010) and January (2011). We used all three floors as there was five of us. The house is huge, with lots of indoor and outdoor space. The top floor is the best with a great seating area, we called it the bird's nest & spent most of our evenings hanging out there! It gives you great views of the ocean & sunsets. The house is nicely decorated with lots of Thai trimmings, the beds were comfy & the bathrooms were clean. The pool is a stone's throw away, not busy, clean & refreshing. We used the ground floor room so had use of the kitchen which was great to cook breakfasts and then eat them back on the top floor bird's nest! I travelled around a bit of Thailand & Koh Mak stands out for me because it's so peaceful and still really Thai with not much tourism at all. The beaches are stunning and barely disturbed. Plus it's insanely cheap with plenty of tasty traditional restaurants. I'd recommend Mem's Restaurant which is right next door to this house. Also Mong's Noodles near a diving shop and the Koh Mak Seafood restaurant were both delicious too. If you've got time have a Thai cooking lesson at Leng's Cooking School, she's amazing! You can walk from the house to beaches but we enjoyed renting scooters and driving a bit further a field. I can't wait to go back and stay in this house again, after reading the recent reviews it's sounds like it's got even better!
Response from the owner Many thanks for that lovely review! We have indeed made some changes - we'd like to think improvements! We've added satellite TV (Premier League etc) and 24/7 wifi at no extra cost, plus upgraded the kitchen equipment, so now there is a coffee maker, blender, and a variety of other useful gadgets, along with other improvements, eg to the mosquito nets for the bedrooms, and an upgrade for one of the bathrooms. Plus we have a new management team this year, who also run an Italian restaurant on the island, who do a great job in maintaining the heavily stocked garden, and in keeping the house up to their very high standards of cleanliness. I do hope you return soon!
“Lovely villa in Koh Mak”
We rented the entire villa for 4 nights & we were 2 families with kids. The owner John was very helpful & reliable when booking. No hidden costs & all was very up front. he was even very open to suggestions on how to improve the little things to make it an even more pleasant place! On arrival, we loved the place. Beautiful surroundings & lovely living space...the 3rd floor is gorgeously decorated & probably perfect for a romantic getaway on a idillic island with vistas of the oceans & neighboring islands. Well equipped and convienantly located in Koh Mak...this was the perfect accommodation for our group.
Response from the owner Many thanks for this, Alex! I've added a blender to the kitchen equipment, and changed the mosquito nets - you were right about this! Also given the bathrooms a minor "overhaul". Look forward to seeing you in the near future maybe?
“Perfect Island Retreat!”
We are a Canadian family of 4 travelling with our children aged 11 and 13. We are on a long trip and rented apartments/houses all over europe. We love staying in our own place vs. hotels, and it is difficult to find houses or apartments in Thailand. We were so lucky to find this place and we stayed for over 2 weeks! It is even nicer than the photos show - big bedrooms, nice bathrooms, lots of terraces (including the very Thai looking one at the top with the beautiful view of the ocean). Pool is lovely and clean, there is a great little inexpensive Thai restaurant right beside, the beaches were beautiful, there was good snorkeling and everyone on the island is very friendly. The house was cleaned every 3 days which was so nice. It's a great place to relax! We hope to return some day! Highly recommend for a romantic getaway or a nice place for families!
Response from the owner Dear Betty - thank you so much for this. I was so glad the house worked so well for you. Every booking is different, and every customer's expectations, so it is very rewarding to know we went at least some of the way to making your stay a happy one.
