“Exceeded our expectations!”
I am originally from Oahu and now live on the Mainland and found Pu'uhonua to be such a special place. It was even better than I imagined, which I was pleasantly surprised about! More than just the beauty of the house and location, there is a sense of being immersed in the spirit of aloha. And even though you feel far removed from civilization, modern conveniences are very close which is nice. Bruce and Nikki were very gracious and shared some of the fruits grown on the property itself and Nikki offers wonderful spa treatments in natural surroundings next door!
Since our return from Hawaii, a day does not pass that the view from the Pu'uhonua House is not remembered. The “treehouse” as the children affectionately named it provided landscaped grounds with Hawaiian plants, coconuts, pineapples, coffee, and papayas for all to investigate. Indoors the pole house provided a variety of sleeping arrangements including separate bedrooms and a loft and was plenty big enough for our family of five. The Pu'uhonua House is centrally located so that there is driving access to a variety of sites and activities including beaches, snorkeling, boats, surfing and historic landmarks. The house grill is more than adequate to cook a fine steak to end the day and then begin the evening with a beautiful sunset and speckled lights accenting the valley below. The owners were wonderful to work with and responded to any emails or questions quickly. We highly recommend the Pu'uhonua House!
“You are going to love this house!”
We were on the Big Island for 2 weeks and by far the best part of our trip was our stay at Pu'uhonua House. It was spacious and very clean, the hosts were terrific, the beds and baths were very comfortable and with the wrap around balconies and the gorgeous ocean view we never wanted to leave. The kitchen had everything that we needed for our group of 8, 4 adults and 4 kids. There are terrific restaurants nearby, I would recommend stopping by Da Poke Shack for some amazing "Hawaiian Sushi" to go. We had an wonderful day at the Place of Refuge followed by snorkeling at Two Step. Captain Cook is the ideal destination for when you're a little tired of the touristy areas north of Kona. We will definitely rent this house again.
“Great treehouse property away from touristy downtown!”
We stayed in this fantastic property with another couple and had a fabulous time in the Captain Cook area. We loved the accommodation. We felt like we were up in the trees, with gorgeous flowers all around (they smelled amazing at night) and the sound birds just outside your window. We kept the windows open (with screens) all the time and were very comfortable. It was at about 500 ft elevation, so cooler than down at the beach and in Kailua. We were very happy that we chose to stay outside of town - not our style, it seemed very touristy. The treehouse was the opposite of touristy. Before we booked, we didn't appreciate that we would have our own onsite tour guide, Dan. Dan was there to greet us and offered tons of suggestions (and freshly caught ono one day - it was fabulous!), but was completely unobtrusive. We took him up on the kayak tour in Kealakekua Bay (Captain Cook monument). What an amazing day! We saw and swam with tons of dolphins, it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Dan also recommended a company to do the manta ray night snorkel, which we also really enjoyed. We all thought he was the perfect person for this type of role - so friendly and easy to talk to. All in all, we had a great time and loved our stay at the treehouse.
“Pu'uhonua House - stunning views and comfortable atmosphere”
Pu'uhonua House is a bright and airy retreat with sweeping views of the ocean. Hidden from the road, the narrow driveway opens up in front of the house which rises up into the sky. The house is well-furnished, with comfortable beds, as well as many spots to sit and enjoy the view, or read a book. The house is supplied with books about the island, and exploring the area. The kitchen pantry was well-stocked. The house is also a short walk to the local grocery store, small restaurants, cafés, and the Farmers Market on Sundays.
“Relax in this amazing house as you watch the play of light as th”
This beautiful pole house provides a relaxing perch to experience the magic of the mountainside as it meets the blue Pacific. The main (upper) level was a delight with its lovely wood and the full panel sliding doors that could be positioned wide open to enjoy the tropical air inside and out, or screened or closed in seemingly endless combinations. The huge, wrap-around lanai, perched high in the trees, is the perfect place to soak in the never-ending view south along the coast or those quick tropical sunsets. In our ten days at the house, we never tired of the way the light and cloud-shadows played on the mountain's slope and on the glittering waters of the Pacific below. You can feel yourself relax as you take in the perfect way the mountain comes down so huge and yet so graceful to the sea. Great food is close at hand (don't miss the Coffee Shack just down road or annie's for great burgers-follow up with tremendous Gio's gelato right next to annie's). The whole island is within striking distance from here. We had beach days, volcano days, rainforest days, South Point days and poking around Captain Cook and Kona days. This is truly a fabulous house that made possible a trip that we will never forget. Everything was as advertised and better. We can highly recommend Pu'uhonua House to all.
“Perfect! Authentic yet with every amenity!”
We used to live in Hawaii and wanted to share this special place with our children and closest friends. This house was perfect! Plenty of room for all of us to spread out, comfy beds, fully equipped kitchen and gorgeous views all day, but especially at sunset! It's perfect in every way! Dan the caretaker was so helpful with little hidden treasures in the vicinity and any equipment we needed for our activities. It was a perfect way to spend our New Years celebration!
“Great place to stay -- better than expected”
This is a very unique home because of the construction, the view, and the location. Although it is only a minute from the main state highway through Captain Cook, and there are other houses in the area, the property feels completely isolated because of the little-used access road and long driveway. We stayed 10 days and saw no other cars or people other than the caretaker who lives in an adjacent building. The caretaker was a pleasant surprise. He is a very friendly and helpful fellow who gave us good advice, took us snorkeling, and would have taken us kayaking if the surf had not been so high. Everything was clean and working when we arrived, and the home was an excellent fit for our group of seven. There is a grocery store a few minutes away where we bought food for the meals we had at the house. What you see in the description and web site is what you get. We would love to come back.
“Pinch Me Perfect Place of Refuge for your Big Island adventures”
This was our 2nd stay here -- we are returning guests. This time we were accompanied by our dear friends. We slept like logs on their comfy beds (complete with Island themes & snuggly Hawaiian quilts.) We enjoyed many fine meals, watching the sun set, sipping our wine, as we grilled our steaks and fish. Yum! Breakfasts were divine -- so many choices of where to sit -- front, back, in? Off we'd go on our adventures -- snorkeling (close by), volcanos, shopping, kayaking. Wrap up your day by sitting on the wrap-around lanais, watch the sun set, and breathe! Honestly, it was hard to leave each morning. An additional plus: Dan the caretaker. He was there if we needed him -- otherwise he gave us our space & privacy. Dan is a good guy, has great suggestions and was even willing to take us out kayaking -- we ran out of time -- next time! The owners are easy to work with -- good, honest, nice folks. Lots of nice places close by that you can go to for breakfast (the Coffee Shack!), Lunches (Annies for burgers) & Dinners (Jackie Reys). But you'll find you will also want to dine back at the house so you can unwind in pure island luxury. Decisions, decisions. A final word: when you stay here, you'll return with a lifetime of wonderful memories!
“Great place, view, accomodations, & our host Dan!”
This house was perfect for our stay! We needed the 5 rooms for us, & it worked out great. This is one of those unique gems in the Captain Cook area. Dan was very helpful in sharing his knowledge with us, and entertainment possibilities - & participated in a couple. Thanks - Maholo bill
