My husband and I along with our best friends stayed at Cielomar Lodge in February, it was such an amazing place. Jeff, the owner was awesome, he is so knowledgeable about the surrounding jungle, and even took the time to take us on jungle hikes. The house was absolutely beautiful, we loved the open air room as well as the pool overlooking the jungle and ocean. Bruce the caretaker was great too. He provided us with fresh fruit each day and made sure we didn't miss the sloth and monkeys. Th house's proximity to surrounding grocery markets and beach is perfect, just secluded enough to enjoy the beautiful jungle but close enough to "run" into town. The four of us loved our time at Cielomar Lodge and cannot wait to return! Thank you Jeff for providing such a retreat!

“Our week in paradise!”

Reviewed 19 Apr 2012

We stayed here the first week of april, 2012. We had a wonderful time living in the house, surrounded by the jungle. There was more than enough room for our family to spread out but we always ended up in the canopy room together. It was the perfect place for reading, having a morning coffee, doing a board game with the kids, or a catnap in the hammock. The kids absolutely loved having the pool to play in after we got back from our daily adventures and the caretaker always made sure it was clean. Yes, there are bugs and lizards who are trying to get to those bugs hanging out on the wall, but this house is in the jungle and those kinds of things are to be expected. It's not my favorite thing but we really wanted our kids to have a different experience- and this was it! We were lucky to be there when the owner, Jeffrey, was there and we had a chance to relax and talk with him. He has a background in biology and is a wealth of knowledge about the area. He and the caretaker, Bruce, gave us great info and even treated us to the most delicious fresh fruit daily, delivered to our doorstep. One of the best things about the house is its location. It sits atop a hill and the view to the ocean is incredible. We took advantage of the trails behind the house and explored the jungle- what fun! It is about a 10 min walk to the beach and it was almost deserted. The kids found sea anemones, sea urchins, snails, small fish and several types of crabs in the rocky area. Just beside it is a huge, sandy shallow area perfect for swimming/snorkeling. There are great restaurants nearby and a small local grocery for convenience. Between the ziplining, Jaguar Rescue Center, local chocolate tour, and the beach, we found the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation on our trip. We would definitely recommend Cielomar to any of our friends or family. Enjoy! Jeff and Bruce- Hope all is well and pet africa, Big Boy and Teddy Bear for us ?

“Fantastic place!!”

Reviewed 3 Apr 2012

My children 9 and 11, stayed here. It was an amazing place!! We went all over Costa Rica, but found this to be the most rewarding and funnest of all. The house is imaculate, as well as the grounds. Jeff and Bruce are there to help if you need and were amazing. From the house we rented a car that was delivered to us, and we were able to go to the sloth sancturary, jaguae rescue center, into town, ride waves until complete exhaustion. And most special of all ride horses on the beach with Bruce!! My daughter had gone to heaven how he allowed her to treat the horse as her own. A must stay for sure!!!

Response from the owner Sandra's daughter had wanted to ride horses on the beach, so it was serendipitous that Bruce Walker was living on the property as my caretaker helper. Bruce has a stable (Playa Chiquita Riding Adventures) right at the bottom of our hill.. This group made the most of their stay here, even venturing out for night hikes in the jungle! -Jeff VanArsdell

“Jungle House”

Reviewed 23 Jan 2012

This is a great house if you like the outdoors. There is plenty of wildlife all over the place. Bruce Walker was the caregiver when my friends & I stayed. He was helpful, friendly, & kept the grounds tidy. His dogs & cat were great, too. My friends and I opted not to rent a car after having trouble with Poas Car Rental (we do not recommend dealing with them). We were able to get around by foot, bike, & bus. Hiking up the hill to the house at night in the dark (after 6 p.m.) was something we decided to avoid. The kitchen is well equipped so we cooked dinner regularly. The house is on a beautiful piece of land with mountain, jungle, & ocean views. Several in our party took the hike to the owner's rancho & loved the jungle. The house is open so there are insects throughout the house. I wouldn't recommend staying in the upstairs canopy room if you haven't done a lot of camping.

Response from the owner This is the first time of many that a customer has had a problem with the local car rental company, Poas car rental. Upon investigating, I found out the problem was that the guest had requested a car with automatic transmission (as she was unable to drive one with a standard transmission), and there was a communication error. Poas did not have a car with automatic transmission available for them. Many other guests have used them without a problem. The top part of the house IS open to the outside - that's why there is a mosquito net enclosing the bed. It's actually my favorite place to sleep! (Most guests here find that there are not nearly as many mosquitos, etc as they were expecting) Jeff VanArsdell (owner)

My friends and I stayed at Cielomar during my wedding and we had a trip that words fall short of accurately describing. It was beyond breathtaking for starters. It inspired both serenity and activity and gave everyone both a group experience and a solo experience. The house is beautiful and accompanied by the pool and bar area, quite large. The surrounding land gives a realistic demonstration of life in the jungle that you soon learn to appreciate. Be prepared to live side-by-side with rainforest life! I'm sure I speak for many guests when I state that if you can't respect or value that, you're not welcome. This is far too special a place to trash or ruin. I will definitely return...and just's a really good idea to sweep everyday!

“Three weeks in Paradise”

Reviewed 11 Sep 2011

Cielomar is located up a steep hill a few driving minutes from the beach. The villa is entirely surrounded by impressive natural jungle: overgrown trees, colorful flowers, howling monkeys, sleepy sloths, tukans, parrots, and much more. A covered terrace on top provides a 360* view of the jungle and the ocean. Great views also from the pool, with groups of parrots and toucans flying in the trees above us. Punta Uva, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo have incredible beaches, lots of nature, good restaurants, friendly people, coco loco, and it's virtually tourist-free. We enjoyed driving over unpaved roads to jungle waterfalls, turtle sanctuaries and hidden beaches. We are glad we rented a 4-wheel-drive SUV for our jungle explorations. The beaches closest to Cielomar, such as arecife and Punta Uva are very beautiful as well. Our 2-day trip to Vulcan arenal taught us that we had found the best place for us in Costa Rica: Punta Uva. We (4 adults and 2 children) stayed at Cielomar for almost three weeks - and it was a sad day when we had to return home. We thank Jeff for being a great helpful host; and our daughters say hi to Puca and africa and all the other dogs they met during this most memorable vacation.

Response from the owner Gerhard and Maritza made the most of their stay here by getting out and exploring ther area on their own, including taking a trip to the waterfall near Bribri, and they also found their way to the turtle hatching facility in Gandoca, where they and their daughters got to help some baby turtles make it to the ocean .... some of the best experiences here are off the beaten path! Jeff

“"Wonderful Jungle & Ocean experience" loved it!!!”

This trip was truly excellent! We stayed at Cielomar for 5days. Couldn't have been any better unless of course we could have stayed longer! We spent most of our time in the Jungle(all kinds of plant life and animals to see, which by the way is the backyard of the rental house, approx 70 acres, beautiful. Jeff personally led us through the Jungle on trails that he keeps maintained. He was so helpful with every kind of accommodation we asked for.We also enjoyed jumping into our own private pool with an ocean view & cabana after a nice hike. The wildlife is just unbelievable. We hiked the trails and the creeks all the way to the Rancho Jeff had built over looking Panama. Wonderful place to stop for pictures and a break in the hammock! And in the house the ocean is visible from all three floors and the jungle from the back of the house. Waking up early here feels right! The howler monkeys can help do that! Very active in the morning! There are several beaches within walking distance or several more you can reach with a bike rental which is how we spent our 5days. We stopped in on every beach down the coast. So beautiful, clear water, and not very populated at all. It was practically our own private beach area. Punta Uva is just a short bike ride down the road & is very calm and clear, wonderful for snorkeling.Night life in town is about 3miles away and very lively every night. If your into preparing your own meals, the house is fully equipped with every thing needed and even a sitting area out by the pool big enough for at least 12 people! We particularly enjoyed the restaurant "Jungle Love" but there are so many to try!The weather was also perfect, no need for an aC, in the 80's during the day & nice and cool with the ocean breeze at night. It only rained once during our stay and that was at night! We will definitely visit here again. Best house in the area with the best owner/caretaker too. Thanks Jeff for your company and all your help to make our visit perfect!!!

Response from the owner I love it when guests enjoy the place and appreciate it as I do... I feed on their energy and am inspired to make it the best experience I can for people who stay here! That's how it was when John and Tiffany visited. Jeff

“Exceeded our expectations”

Reviewed 19 Jul 2011

We spent a week at this wonderful property, and with the combination of the wildlife we saw from the canopy room (or as the kids called it, the jungle room) and what we saw on hikes through Jeff's personal jungle preserve (65+ acres) we did not feel the need to go an any additional jungle tours or travel to Manuel antonio. It is amazing to have primary jungle with well maintained trails right in one's backyard. We saw howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, flocks of toucans, parrots, red-eyed tree and poison dart frogs right from the house. Insect life was also amazing. All this will an ocean view and proximity to some very beautiful beaches. We and the kids took turns sleeping in the canopy room. The sound of the jungle (and waves crashing on the beach) at night is amazing. This was an amazing trip that we and the kids will remember for the rest of oyur lives.

“fantastic jungle experience”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2011

We spent the beginning of a 2 week stay in costa rica at this wonderful home. Jeff was so helpful, and we truly enjoyed his company and his stories about the place. We saw more animals here than anywhere else and it was so active in the morning. we were up early every day. loved the hike to the ranchero, lots of interesting birds and bugs, loved the geckos in the house (keep looking for them at home out of habit). the pool was so refreshing to come home to daily. fun things to do-snorkel at punta uva, it was calm and we saw many fish, the jaguer rescue center and holding the monkeys, good places to eat-jungle love for great dinner, max's in manzanillo, pizza at carols?? think that name is wrong. A 4x4 is necessary if you dont want to walk a great deal, we however managed our 5 days without one, (and with some help from jeff). there are no atms within walking distance, but local grocery did take debit. restaurants tended to only take cash. the water in the home was great, no problems..loved how everything is kept so natural by jeff and environmentally fits in. would go back again!! was our favorite part of the 2 week stay, only wish our friends had joined us in this home instead of in manuel antonio. thanks jeff!
