Very Good

“Absolutely wonderful!”

Reviewed 25 Jan 2015

We absolutely loved everything about Casa Dos Rios! The house is amazing and exactly what we wanted with our rainforest experience. It is VERY comfortable while taking full advantage of the amazing location. We could not have had more fun just hanging around the property - playing on the beach, resting in the hammocks, hiking to the waterfalls and watching all of the amazing wildlife right from our house! Additionally, we loved going to the Osa Wildlife Sanctuary - an incredible place doing important work. And, we HIGHLY recommend the sailing tour with the owners of Casa Dos Rios, Kim and Melanie. We had the BEST time with them out on the water. In fact, they were so wonderful with every part of this vacation. In a nutshell, they are just REALLY nice people who go out of their way to make your stay wonderful! We would have loved Casa Dos Rios in any case, but the fact that Kim and Melanie are so nice really made our stay extra special! I would not change one thing about this special place - we hope to be back!

“All you could ask for!”

After staying at an amazing villa in Dominical(Flying Toucans)we wanted to end our vacation on a high note. We choose Cabo Matapalo for it's splendid wildlife, beaches and vistas. After careful consideration we choose Casa Dos Rios and we are glad we did. Melanie and Kim were wonderful hosts, a perfect blend of hosting yet giving us all the privacy we desired. We left with sore necks from watching all the wildlife right above our heads. Located right on the ocean we surfed and kayaked everyday out our front door. Only complaint is we couldn't stay longer but...we'll be back! Thanks Kim and Melanie :)

“Simply the best!”

What a wonderful vacation we just had. I was a little worried that I had chosen a 'glorified camping' option, but as soon as we arrived, my concerns disappeared. You cannot beat the location, attention to detail and obvious care the owners took in creating this special place for those lucky enough to find it. My mother in law kept saying she would do the dishes every meal because of the view! Who gets to prep dinner and wash dishes while watching whales put on a performance? The fact there are no screens on the house wasn't an issue, the bugs were minimal, and the netting on all beds was perfectly sufficient. We got into the natural rhythms of each day, waking with the sun & sleeping soon after the sun went down. It felt so healthy, restful & rejuvenating. It was such a lovely break to not have any stores close by- we cooked all our own meals and enjoyed every moment we prepped food in the well equipped kitchen. Our almost 5 year old had a great time learning about all the creatures, including five species of monkeys, a boa constrictor, blue morpho butterflies, cleaning ants, funny little bunny-like things and so much more!! You can easily walk to Pan Dulce and Backwash at a lower tide, though we mostly used our vehicle (4wD a must) It's been a long time since I have been truly sad for a vacation to end, but our 10 night stay at CDR could have been longer. For us, the set up was perfect- 2 bedrooms upstairs (hubby and I, then little boy in the other) & Grandma downstairs.. With still a spare bedroom. Just to point out, there are two bathrooms. I think on one website it lists 1 bathroom which almost changed our decision, but the upstairs bathroom is with toilet and spacious shower, downstairs bathroom has toilet and sink, with the shower being a private outdoor shower. We loved our stay at CDR & when we next return, will stay here again! For those if you who are thinking of staying here, & wanting to experience the Osa in all it's glory, this is the place.

“We enjoyed our stay at Casa Dos Rios and it gave us an experienc”

That was our second visit to Cabo Matapalo within a one-month period. Both times we booked our stay with Melanie and our experience was absolutely incredible on every level! We weren't able to stay at "Casa Dos Rios" on our first visit. Another party already booked the house and Melanie offered us to stay at her neighbor's house Casa Tuanis. We spent 4 wonderful days. Two weeks lately we came back to Cabo Matapalo & were able to book Casa Dos Rios. We just fell in love with that place from the first sight. One could feel how much love & efforts Melanie & her husband Kim put into it.The house is very spacious with an incredibly high vaulted ceiling. It's good for up to 8 people. It has a very specious living room where we enjoyed ourselves day and night. An open-air setting of Casa Dos Rios creates a perfect connection with the jungle & beautiful landscaping around the house made it even more incredible. The ocean view is spectacular! It's great that there was a Wi-Fi in the house. My husband was able to take care of some business stuff remotely. Having Internet is pretty unique for the area as the entire town is off-grid and Casa Dos Rios is fully powered by solar. Having hot water, a fridge, internet and even electricity is a luxury add-on for rentals in Cabo Matapalo and Casa Dos Rios has it all. We loved our wonderful kitchen where one can find everything needed for cooking. Bedrooms are very cozy. Multiple windows & wall openings allowed breeze to go through & keep air fresh throughout the night. We enjoyed different activities during the day: surfing, fishing, kayaking, boogie boarding, sunbathing, yoga, reading.We were so excited to see brown Capuchin monkeys crossing the lawn in front of the house. There were pelicans, toucans, lots of beautiful scarlet macaw and many other birds all around & in the sky. Now we constantly think of coming back soon! Thanks Melanie and Kim for your hospitality and letting us stay at your beautiful house. Christina&Vadim;

“Fantastic area, beautiful house, and friendly hosts equal Casa Do”

Reviewed 4 Mar 2013

We (two couples) stayed at Casa Dos Rios (CDR) for 10 days. The house is beautiful 4 bedroom, open air. It is very clean with gleaming hardwood floors, comfortable beds, fresh linens equipped kitchen. We spent time walking along the beach (at low tide) and along the road. There are 2 waterfalls nearby which are beautiful and lots of wildlife to see (toucans, macaws, 4 types of monkeys). We swam everyday, read, played cards. The evenings had a few bugs when we had the lights on but never any that bothered us. The beds had bug nets and we slept well (it does take a few nights to get used to the jungle sounds). We woke to the sound of the howler monkeys and the birds at around 530 am so bedtime comes early. We went on the sailing trip with Kim and Melanie. It was great fun. They taught us about sailing, we went swimming and they made a wonderful lunch with cold beverages. We will do it again next year. Melanie prepared 5 meals for us. They we all outstanding dinners and I highly recommend you take advantage of her culinary skills. We also ate at Martina's a few nights. Food is excellent, 5 minute walk. The beach at CDR is a bit challenging until you get to know it. Once you see it at low tide, you can figure it out. After we got to know it, we had no trouble and swam every day. We also took advantage of the river to cool off. On our last day we took our wine and sat in the river mouth and said goodbye to the Osa for another year. ): Melanie and Kim are wonderful hosts and friendly people. They are happy to share their knowledge of the area and will assist you any way they can (booking excursions or taxis etc). They are the kind of people who make you feel welcome and comfortable at the first hello. The Osa is a magical area. It is natural, beautiful and full of amazing wildlife. Cdr is a beautiful, comfortable home to stay in, and Melanie and Kim are warm, welcoming and knowledgeable hosts. What more can one wish for?

“An incredible vacation at Casa Dos Rios!”

We spent a week here in December, 2012 (and a week at a nearby house). The location is incredible. Just off the beach--gentle surf and warm water, with view of water. Interesting wildlife everywhere. From the house you see monkeys, toucans, parrots, scarlet macaws, hummingbirds, frogs, and even an ocelot. We've traveled a lot, but never experienced this before. We woke early each morning to the amazing sounds of birds and monkeys. We jumped out of bed, grabbed our binoculars, and gawked! we hiked, swam, and relaxed. Our adult son took surfing lessons. Nearby is the area's gathering spot: Martina's Bar, which serves near-gourmet food. And several high end eco-lodges are nearby, where you can eat, hire guides, and enjoy the trails. The weather was perfect: hot and humid, but comfortable. And no mosquito or flies--which was a miracle! The house is large, immaculately clean, and beautifully designed wood construction (unlike the many concrete houses in the area). Overhead fans and fridge--all solar powered. Kim and Melanie Norman, the owners who live next door, were like great friends--offering us lots of info, and whatever help we needed. Although there were just 3 of us, the house has 4 bedrooms, with a queen size bed in each room. We rented a 4 wheel drive (the cheapest one) and were glad we did; it gave us lots of flexibility to enjoy the natural wonders of this beautiful place. Kraig P and Donna C

“Cdr is where tropical rain forest meets the gentle water of Golf”

Melanie and Kim were gracious hosts who live nearby Casa Dos Rios. Before arriving there Kim will explain how to prepare for your visit. The home is large enough for two families, but very comfortable for two people. It has an open plan with a nice ocean view. The off the grid lighting system worked well and the kitchen was nice with an excellent stove and refrigerator. The location is remote and I would recommend that you have a vehicle while there so as to be able to explore the beauty of the Osa Penninsula. Within walking distance of CDR is a beautiful waterfall that can be accessed by walking up a clear stream. The wildlife is spectacular with frequent sightings of several species of monkey in addition to macaws and toucans. We arrived at the tail end of the rainy season and the occasional storm was breathtaking in its intensity but the sun was never far away. The highlight of our visit was sailing with Melanie and Kim on Golfo Dulce. I also enjoyed strolling the beach and watching locals catch fish. The fact that there were no mosquitoes while I visited was a great plus. The only drawback that I feel should be mentioned is the distance from the food market in Puerto Jimenez. The taxi driver who picked us up at the airport was very helpful in making the necessary stops in town so that we had the proper provisions. Be sure and get the Spanish language list of groceries from Melanie and, when shopping, go to the produce market, in addition to the supermarket. Bring Crocs or other closed toe waterproof footware. In conclusion, Casa Dos Rios is a comfortable place in a land of wild beauty. It might be well to integrate a visit there as a way to unwind from a visit to the back country of the Corcovado National Park.

Response from the owner Dear Bill and Sue, Thanks so much for your review. We appreciate the advice regarding car rental, as well as the suggestion that the groceries are far away, so to stock up before getting to the house is a must! I will add that the bar-restaurant just down the lane is open for 9 months of the year and offers lunch and dinner meals. Many guests take advantage of this. You came at a time when it was closed, but it did open December 1st. We really appreciate your comments about our sailing tour and we hope that those comments will encourage other of our future guests in taking that excursion with us. We love to do it and we also love the chance to get to know our guests better over a day of sailing. It is with warm regards and wishes for a bright future, that we respond to your review. “Our extended family spent Christmas week 2012 at Casa Dos Rios.”

Reviewed 17 Jan 2013

Casa Dos Rios is a joy, as are owners Melanie and Kim Norman. We were a family of 9, I (the grandmother,) my 3 adult children, the husband of one of my children, and 4 grandchildren, ages 8, 6, 5, 4. We all loved the house. Bugs were not a problem to me. Be prepared for heat during the day; nights became cool enough. We loved the Cape and its crazy roads, which run through streams. Be sure to rent 4-wheel drive cars. Suggest you make a grocery list and pay Melanie to do your preliminary shopping trip. The fridge stays cool enough; no freezer. The beach outside is not good for little children, but gentler ones are nearby. The area is best for adventurous travelers, I think. The restaurant down at the corner is fun for dinner. I'd love to go back to Casa Dos Rios. Tomorrow!

Response from the owner Hi Judith, Thanks so much for your kind words. We really enjoyed having your family here for Christmas. I always love to meet and connect with people of my Louisiana heritage. You and I seem to be kindred spirits and I would have loved to visit with you more. Come back some time and we will take an excursion to the mountains together, or just spend more time getting to know each other. Meanwhile we wish you a happy and prosperous 2013! Melanie and Kim

“Treehouse Living at Its Finest”

Reviewed 9 Jan 2013

Melanie and Kim are wonderful hosts. Our stay at Casa Dos Rios was memorable for all the right reasons. We loved the simplicity of the house, the beachfront location and the on site amenities available to us. The house is clean and comfortable. We slept great every night in the netted beds, awakened each morning by various monkeys and birds in the surrounding jungle. And best of all Melanie and Kim are right there to advise on adventures, meals, road conditions and so much more.

Response from the owner Buddy, Thanks so much for that review. We hope to be your hosts again some time, as, your family did all the things that travelers to here should take advantage of. We know that you will go for the gusto and we admire that of you. Enjoy this new year ahead! warm regards, Melanie and Kim Norman

“Beautiful big house with lots of monkeys”

Reviewed 9 Aug 2012

My daughter and I spent a month in Costa Rica and our second to last night was at Casa dos Rios. Saw more wildlife here than any other place we stayed. Three types of monkeys hanging around the house as well as sorts of birds. Kim & Melanie are gracious hosts and were really fun to visit with. House is huge, with big kitchen and views of the water. Looking forward to returning with a larger group in the near future.
