“Best accommodation of our entire trip”

Reviewed 9 Feb 2015

Myself and two friends travelled to Bali late in January, which was the first visit to Indonesia for all of us. Our first stop was Angel Villa and it was the best introduction to Bali we could possibly have asked for. Annie and Rod (as well as being fantastic hosts) are so knowledgeable not only of Balinese culture, but also of the local surrounds, and so for Bali novices like ourselves, we found ourselves saying "We'll ask Annie when we get back" whenever there was something we didn't fully understand, and without fail, they had the answers. Their recommendations were consistently spot on, not only for fantastic local places to eat and drink, but also for shopping destinations like for silver jewelery etc, and the best ways to get around - locally, as well as off to our next destination. We stayed in the Poolside room, which is the larger room of the two on offer, and is lovely and light, with fans and air-con to relieve the humid and hot temperatures. On days we weren't out exploring, the Villa was a fantastic place to relax - we spent a lot of time on the balai or relaxing by the pool, reading, playing cards and/or having a couple of bintangs. The gardens are exquisite and provide a brilliant oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the streets. Given it's a homestay there is a fully equipped kitchen, and while we used it for snacks only, if you were interested in cooking a 'proper' meal you'd find everything you need, and the local supermarket is a 5 min walk away. The location in Mas is great - out of the crazy-ness of Ubud which is a huge plus, but still easy enough to get in to Ubud if and when you want to. Local market is spitting distance away for all things fresh (and is a must visit), as are cheap warungs for delicious local style food, as well as slightly more expensive restaurant style places if you so desire. Great bar called Dstar which has live music a few times a week is also easy walking distance away. Oh, and did I mention the pool?!?! As hosts Annie and Rod are very respectful - there when you need them, but at the same time it really felt like we had the place to ourselves most of the time. There is no curfew, and we all felt very comfortable to come and go as we pleased. And I know it' might seem like a small thing, but over our couple of weeks in both Bali and on the Gili Islands, Angel Villa had by far the absolute best water pressure of all our accommodation choices! Loved staying here, would return without hesitation.

Response from the owner Thanks for such a lovely review :) We are so happy that your 1st experience travelling to Bali was such a good one. Rod, Pak Kadek and I loved having you stay and show you the Bali that we love. You were wonderful guests and we hope to see you all again as soon as possible. We send you blessings from Angel Villa. Annie

“Lovely serene escape from Ubud hussle!”

Reviewed 14 Jan 2015

I stayed here with my partner and a friend for 10 night over Christmas and all had a lovely time away. The house is amazing with all mod cons you could need. It's clean modern and reassuringly western. Usually water is a problem in asia but it was great to have fresh filtered water on tap, on the call. Mas is a little bit out from Ubud but don't let this deter you as Mas is a lovely area full of rice paddies and twisty lane ways so there's plenty to keep the curious trekker happy. If your after a little night life D-Star bar is a must! Only 100m down from the house, they have an amazing open garden setting full of tin sculpture, created by the owner himself. Everything is for sale. The cocktails and service are great. In fact you'd be hard pressed to find anything better in Ubud. Truth! As this is a home stay (a house not a hotel) you will need to organize some food supplies if you plan on cooking but that's no problem. Coco Marts are everywhere but for a true local experience you have to go to veggie market and is full of interesting exotic produce, runs daily and is only about 1km up the road. If you do plan on exploring further then scooters are definitely recommended. You can walk to Ubud through all the backstreets and there's some lovely scenery to be seen but in the Bali heat, it does get weary sometimes. Take lots of water! If scooters aren't your thing, there are taxis from here to infinity that are all eager for your business. Anywhere from 50-100k Rupee from Mas to Ubud in taxi is all you should pay. The hosts, Annie & Rod (originally from Melbourne) , are half the reason why we enjoyed our stay in Bali so much. Both are fluent in Balinese and have assimilated fantastically into Balinese culture. They where central in giving us all the required local knowledge we needed to know from where to, and where not to go. Saving time patience and some money on the way. It was really nice to have a busy day in Ubud and come back to the house all sweaty and jump in the pool for a cool swim and having a nice chat with Annie & Rod about our days activities. If your wanting to get off the well trodden tourist track and see something a little different in Bali whilst enjoying an amazing house with amazing hosts, and come back richer than before then Angel Villa is a must. We cannot wait for our next stay here. - Chris, Wendy & Sally.

Response from the owner Thanks so much for taking the time to write and for such positive words about your stay with us :) So glad we were able to show you a real Balinese experience as well as an Aussie/Bali Christmas. We look forward to seeing you again at Angel Villa Mas Ubud. Safe and happy 2015 from us all.

“AMAZING!”

My husband and I cannot speak highly enough of our experience at Angel Villa, however I will give it a shot! Annie, Rod and Kadek were all ever so welcoming and had a wealth of knowledge about the area. Without the knowledge of these three beautiful people we would not have experienced such amazing traditional food, a local persons' funeral (Annie kindly dressed me in some of here traditional clothing), explore the streets on a scooter and visit the kite festival, just to name a few! I truly cannot encourage you enough to book, I promise you will not be disappointed. If you do book, please give them all a big hug for me!

Response from the owner Thank you so much for Amasing Review :) It was a delight to meet you both and share some of our neighbourhood with you. Blessings, Annie, Rod & Pak Kadek at Angel Villa

“Wonderful Angel Villa”

Reviewed 10 Aug 2014

We had an amazing stay at Angel Villa in Mas. We were three young women traveling together, and used both of the rooms available at the villa. Located in Mas, just outside of Ubud, it feels like a little paradise. Annie and Rod made us feel very at home, and took care of us like they had known us for years. The spoke fluent Bahasa and knew the local community well. They arranged motorbikes, gave us tips on restaurants and yoga classes (The Yoga Barn in Ubud, which is by far the best place I've ever set foot), gave us medicine when one of us got ill, and took us to a Hindu ceremony in Mas which will be a memory of a lifetime. Pad Kadek, the housekeeper, was the sweetest man, who invited us to his home to meet his family and was always looking after us. He even tried to track down my stolen cell phone from the flight! The villa itself was very beautiful, the pictures don't do it justice. It's clean, air conditioned, well kept and felt like a home away from home. The only downside was having to leave, wish we could have stayed longer! We felt very safe and taken care of, and could not have picked a better place to stay in the Ubud area. Thanks for having us, hope to meet you again Annie and Rod! Lilly, Moa & Pauline

Response from the owner Dear Moa, Pauline and Lilly, Rod, Pak Kadek and I thank you very much for taking the time to write such a lovely review about your stay with us at Angel Villa. You were a delight to have stay and we were sad to see you leave. I am also very happy that you got to do and see so many Balinese activities during your stay here, Bali we hope will always remain in your hearts & minds. We would love to see you again as you were perfect guests :) Blessings to you all. Annie @ Angel Villa, Mas Ubud

“Excellent little family getaway!”

Reviewed 21 Apr 2014

We were so happy we stumbled (online) across 'Angel Villa'. Annie and Rod (Aussies too!) were the most accommodating gracious hosts, who could not do enough for us! My husband and I were pleasantly surprised to arrive to a gorgeously clean spacious family room with ensuite and a beautiful pool with wide steps (great for kids) right out front surrounded by a stunning garden. We were traveling with our four year old son and 9 month young baby daughter. We brought along our travel cot, which I was able to easily put beside our bed and our son slept comfortably on the fold out mattress. We could have stayed in a resort room, but we preferred to enjoy the real Bali and annie and Rod helped us to do just that. Plus, there are plenty of delicious restaurants not too far and the drive into Ubud centre is not far at all. Our driver 'Made' (who was introduced to us and who we hired through annie and Rod) was so helpful he took us on some amazing scenic routes we wanted to go see. In my opinion, Annie and Rod could be asking more for their beautiful accommodation, which made it super affordable so we could enjoy having breakfasts at Bali Buddha (excellent extensive menu especially for the kiddies) and elsewhere. Aprox. 4-5 minutes drive, or 15 or so mins walk from angel Villa, is an exceptional Balinese restaurant called Kayun that is all organic and that grows it's own plant-based foods around the restaurant and serves it up on the menu! As a chef, I was very excited to see this. There is also a little (not fancy and no MSG) 'Warung' right beside angel Villa. We felt safe and well taken care of. Our little ones were happy and loved the pool - such a welcome treat after a busy day out checking out the spectacular sights. It was like a little home away from home and I know we have now made some very special friends for when we return... very soon! Thank you annie and Rod for being the best hosts ever! xox The S. Family.

Response from the owner Rod & I were so delighted that you chose Angel Villa for your family holiday. You were the most perfect guests and we loved getting to know your beautiful family. Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a nice review :) We are happy that the room was clean, the pool as beautiful as we think it is and your stay was so enjoyable. We try to make our guests stay as smooth as possible and hope we continue to live up to our guests expectations. We are both looking forward to seeing you all again. We felt like you arrived as guests and left as friends. Thank you so very much and see you soon. Love Annie & Rod

Please find enclosed my reveew you have approved days ago (05/10/2013): Superbe endroit pour un séjour vraiment idéal ! Very nice place to stay with every accomodation. Annie and Rod were very kind with us, we could beneficit from their experience in Bali and though enjoy much better the Balinese lifestyle. Pak Kadek was present to help us for every kind of request and even to teach us the basic Balinese with a smile. As resume, we quit Villa angel feeling we let a part of ourselves behind. We arrived as guests and leaved as friends... Despite the fact we've paid 30 days before our arrival, we were surprised that the payment will be on final bank account only after our departure. Tripadvisor should review its payment rules...

Response from the owner Merci beaucoup Odile and Fred for taking the time to write about your stay with us at Angel Villa. Rod & I loved meeting you both and enjoyed your company, it was sad when you left as we felt we had made new friends. We really hope to see you again and wish you both well. Have a lovely Christmas with your family and I will pass on your kind regards to Pak Kadek. Once agin, thank you both for writing & sharing your story & photos with us. Annie & Rod

“Great place to live / stay”

Reviewed 16 Jul 2013

Our young family stayed for 5 months from January to June 2013. With 2 active pre-schoolers the place was great! Lots of play areas including a good bale, a well-designed safe pool for kids (lack of a fence might be an issue for some - hire available) with frogs, goldfish and a mossy Ganesha keeping an eye on all the action. All secured down the end of a quiet gang. Great location. Friendly Desa of Mas close to Ubud centre, yet also close to the east coast and routes south etc. Pak Kadek manages the house and catches anything that needs attention. He is a super good guy, and were honored that he included us in the unique festivals and community events that were happening during our stay. I've five-starred pretty much everything below, as Five Stars is pretty much how Pak Kadek rolls. My four stars for comfort is a note to people with younger kids - we all slept in the awesome upstairs room, because as while the bedrooms downstairs can be locked, they have unsecured access via an upstairs verandah. No biggie.

Response from the owner Dear John, thank you very much for taking the time to write a review of your stay at Angel Villa. Rod & I were delighted that you & your family enjoyed staying with us and that the village Mas, though not in 'central' Ubud was close enough to experience the real Bali. We really hope you can come & stay again and stay in contact with us all. I will let Pak Kadek know of the kind words you said about him & his care of your family. I know he will be delighted. Many thanks, Annie & Rod

“Family friendly oasis”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2013

We had a wonderful time at angel Villa! A very comfortable and child friendly home in Mas. Lovely room upstairs with views of the neighbouring rooftops and peaks of mountains, divine swimming pool, relaxing 'bale', gorgeous and safe garden for the kids to explore, and fully equipped kitchen. Close to delicious local eateries and a short drive to Ubud centre. Pak Kadek was incredibly helpful and annie and Rod a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended.

Response from the owner Thank you very much Tegan for writing such a lovely review of Angel Villa. We are so happy you all enjoyed your 4 months living in Mas, Ubud. All the best from our family to yours Annie & Rod

Nice house where you feel at home, nice garden and swimming pool, perfect location if you want to enjoy the artistic heart of bali, warm hospitality from the owner, and efficient and always smilling Kadek you take care of all the practicalities. When we come back in Bali, we'll come back to this place and we strongly recommend it. Thanks for Everything Jerome and Flavie

Response from the owner Thanks so much Jerome, Flavie and family for staying with us and taking the time to write such a lovely review. Rod & I were so happy to hear your holiday was so enjoyable. We do hope you come & stay again :) Kind regards, Annie

“A little piece of paradise”

Reviewed 25 Apr 2012

I really needed a break: a chance to unwind and let the stresses be washed away. Angel Villa gave me all of that and more. The house was in an easy to find location that was close to everything but not in the middle of more hustle and bustle. It was a short walk to most of the amenities I needed and a quick drive to those that I wanted. It was 1 minute to this great restaurant that served local fish and the best pork ribs ever and 5 minutes to another eatery that allowed us to have a drink and meal overlooking he local rice paddies. The house itself had everything on hand without being over the top on unneccesary fluff. The pool was deliciously refreshing and the outdoor shower likewise. Inside the bed was really comfortable and it did feel quite exotic to be sleeping in a four poster bed covered in a filmy, shiny mosquito net. Kadek, the housekeeper, was there every day and dicreetly went about his work. He was, however, always ready with a smile or offers to help. Kumang, the driver, was always on time to pick us up and knew his way around so provided not only transport but also tour guides.

Response from the owner Thanks for such a lovely review of Angel Villa. Rod & I are so happy that your stay was enjoyable and a chance to unwind :) We hope you are able to come & stay again. Many thanks, Annie & Rod
