“Cottage magique !”

Reviewed 6 Dec 2014

Philippe , Nadine & Margot

“Beauty, Peace, Nature, and Views at Indigo”

Reviewed 10 Aug 2013

My husband, 15-year old daughter and I just returned from our 9-day stay at Indigo Tree Cottage in Dominica. My heart is so filled with regret for having to leave Indigo and go home, and with awe and gratefulness for our experiences in Dominica, it may be impossible to truly capture this in words. Indigo Tree Cottage is a unique place to stay. It is located on a hillside, and open on one side to the tropical forest. Looking out from the hammock, or sitting by the small backgammon table, you see stately palm trees, flowering shrubs, bananaquits, hummingbirds, and bullfinches. Beside the cottage is a private cold water shower, and the composting toilet is just up the hill ("a loo with a view!"). Everything is beautifully decorated, including colorful paintings by owner Marie Frederick. Marie is a wonderful hostess. She is always available to answer any questions you may have, while at the same time respecting your privacy. She makes sure that the bouquets of tropical flowers and colorful leaves in the cottage are fresh. She brings tropical fruit. She invites you to her beautiful art gallery without any pressure to purchase any of her wonderful paintings. Furthermore, before ever leaving home to go on our trip to Dominica, she responded to all the questions we had in a timely fashion. Although Indigo is located in the woods, it is not far off the main road and is not difficult to reach. Furthermore, it is only about 15 minutes away from Portsmouth, the second largest town in Dominica. Portsmouth has car rentals, banks, grocery stores, black sand beaches, and restaurants. When you look at information about Dominica, it appears that the largest number of attractions are in the Roseau area (which is about one hour from Portsmouth). However, we have found many things to do and see in northern Dominica. Lastly, we have found the august temperatures in Dominica much more pleasant than in Virginia, us! Go to Indigo, and you won't be disappointed!

“Unique and amazing”

Reviewed 14 Jan 2013

We had a wonderful time in Dominica, especially with Marie at the Indigo House. We slept in the crusoe cottage, which has everything one needs, in the middle of the nature, with birds and lots lots of fresh fruits. Marie was extremely welcoming, and we really enjoyed our stay. We did the night+dinner package, and Marie's French inspired food was just excellent, very fresh, and she really poured her heart in it, spending the whole day cooking for our dinner. Her art gallery is very neat too... The whole place is entirely homemade, mainly wood and stone, and simply unique! We definitely recommend this place :).

Response from the owner Hi Nico and Stephanie , Thanks a lot , hope to see you again one day, a bientot j espere One Love Marie

“perfect for the independent traveller”

For those wanting a down-to-earth experience on Dominica try out the Crusoe Cottage at Indigo Gallery. Its located about 3 miles inland from Portsmouth, and bus service (vans) are easily caught at the main road - a 5 minute walk from the cottage. I enjoyed the quaint little porch kitchen with its funky sink and all the fresh fruit that Marie and Clem supplied from their property, as well as the first day supply of bread, butter, rum, coffee and tea. On my first day at Indigo Marie invited me to a party in the Syndicate area. Here I saw a Sisserou parrot and met some amazing Dominican's (both expats and locals) and enjoyed some great food (including Ital food). Crusoe Cottage is basic with a comfy bed, a colorful mosquito net, intriguing wood work and a great supply of reading material. The outhouse/toilet is shared with the other cottage and has great views. The shower was 'cool' (literally - no hot water) and functional. I regret not trying out the bathtub, but perhaps on my next visit. There was an abundance of friendly birds, geckos and lizards, as well as the gentle companionship of the family's dog.

Response from the owner Thanks Shelley, You was the perfect independant traveller enjoying the atmosphere of Indigo, and I am looking forward for you to come back and try the bathtub with hibiscus and aloes .One Love Marie

Marie's place is truly hard to describe. The sheer beauty of the environment, the fantastically artistic tree cottage with every piece of hand-made furniture so naturally graceful, the paintings, the fabric, the walkways, the tropical vegetation dripping everywhere, the food, Marie's hospitality, her gentle dog, the quiet sunrise behind the mountains - all of this and much, much more gave me, a world traveler, the experience I will never forget. Hats off to Marie!!!

“A unique and magical experience”

Reviewed 4 Mar 2012

I discovered Indigo after researching online for accommodation in the north of Dominica. This was my second visit to this wonderful island. I very much enjoyed my stay at Indigo, never having stayed anywhere quite like it before! I so enjoyed watching the beautiful birds feeding on the fruits that Marie had placed in half coconut shells, and the general noise of the wildlife. I felt as if I was living in the trees. The outside toilet had a view to die for, and the addition of National Geographic magazines was very welcome. Marie was kind enough to cook for me each evening, as I was on my own, without transport. She is an excellent cook, and all done on an open, wood fire. I loved being in her house, listening to some of her jazz music, or French recordings, and also chatting to Marie about her very interesting life. The wooden structures were all built by her husband, Clem, as well as the rustic furniture. There was something to catch the eye at every turn, as well as Marie's art work. I was able to walk into Portsmouth, or catch a local bus, so didn't feel isolated. Clem offered me a lift one day so the Syndicate area, so both he and Marie were helpful and accommodating.

Response from the owner thank you Maureen happy that you enjoyed the ''bird nest''which is a perfect description of the feeling in the Indigo cottage
