“Loved it!”

Reviewed 12 Mar 2014

Great location, we borrowed Channa's bicycles for the short (2.4Km) pleasant rides to angkor and other sites. Excellent way to enjoy angkor at a leisurely pace but if you prefer a car or tuktuk the always smiling Sochea lives just down the road. Sochea and Thomas are very knowledgeable about what to see and how to miss the crowds. Channa's family meals are really good, you feel like part of the family. Nights are quiet and you are in the countryside, but only 10 minutes by tuktuk to and from the busy nightlife in Siem Reap. We will use Channa's on our next visit and highly recommend it to our friends. Tips: take mosquito repellent (the beds have mosquito nets), use Sochea and Thomas' local knowledge. Don't miss the more remote temples.

Response from the owner Hello Dave. Thank you for your review. You may not know it, but you were staying with us at the beginning of what has become a record high season for Channa's Angkor Homestay, where we have been almost constantly booked full for a solid four months period! Consequently we have just received a "Gold Top Vacation Rental 2013 award on FlipKey, putting you among a select few to be recognized for your exceptional reviews and impressive listings" - thanks to you, among others :-) You may look up the badge on our website www.angkor.dk. So far the hot season has not hit us with full force yet. There are clearly fewer tourists in town, but we are still getting our fair share. Sochea has had a baby daughter (born on the same day as our Anton!). Everybody is well here. We wish you all the best and hope that you get on with your lives back in Melbourne. Thank you for staying with us! Channa, Amanda, Anita, Anton and Thomas

“Very disappointed”

Reviewed 26 Feb 2014

We made a reservation with Channa's 6 months in advance. We reserved the private room with in-suite bath. Two days before we were due to arrive at Channa's Mr. Carlsen emailed us to say he had overbooked. The result was we no longer had a private bath. We could come but we would be sharing a bathroom with 3 other people. We were already in Siem Reap and now had no place to stay for the 3 nights we were supposed to be at Channa's. It was Christmas week and every hotel was booked. We felt it was unconscionable to renege on a reservation that we'd made 6 months earlier.

Response from the owner We highly regret this unfortunate incident, which happened in the middle of the high season, where everything went a little too fast here. We have been going through our second season in business with full bookings for four months in a row! Inquiries and bookings were at that time coming in from all directions - including from some new booking agencies that I had not yet fully synchronized with the others - and this caused a situation where we had to take our second Superior Homestay room in use to accommodate two couples at the same time. Unfortunately these guests responded negatively to our proposal of a discount of the room rate in return for sharing our only upstairs bathroom reserved for the Superior Homestay accommodation. We had hoped for a little more understanding from these "adventuresome retirees", as Channa's Angkor Homestay is indeed a genuine homestay, where we share our home, meals, and time with our guests.

“Channa's Homestay”

Reviewed 26 Feb 2014

Channa's Homestay is located on the outskirts of Siem Reap, away from the noise of the city. It is not within walking distance to town so you need to hire a tuk-tuk driver to take you back and forth to town. The Homestay is a short tuk-tuk ride from angkor Wat. It was a quiet and relaxing place to stay. The bedrooms were spacious and cleaned everyday. There was mosquito netting around the bed, although we really didn't see many mosquitoes while we were there. Breakfast was included and we had fruit, fresh rolls, pancakes and coffee every morning. Thomas has a lovely family and we spent a lot of time interacting with them. We hired the same tuk-tuk driver for the four days we stayed in Siem Reap. It was great to be dealing with the same person everyday and he took really good care of us. Besides visiting angkor Wat we visited the floating village which we would recommend visiting. Thomas could help with arranging for a tuk-tuk driver and suggesting places to visit.

“Memorable Family Experience!”

Reviewed 25 Feb 2014

We felt comfortable and had fun staying with Thomas and Channa and their 3 wonderful children. Our son is 11 and he got on well with them and now says he has friends in Cambodia. Their family is part of our vacation experience and we smaile everytime we see them in our trip photos. We even got Channa to jump in for a little double dutch jump roping! Another factor that really made our stay was the location of the property to both the town and the temples. They lent us bicycles and we rode around each day and felt we got to see everything at our own pace. Don't worry about being hot - there are plenty of vendors selling water and snacks to keep you comfortable. This was our first "homestay" and have decided it is the way to have a more authentic experience and get to know a place on a deeper level. It went beyond the tasty food and knowledgable advice - it is their friendship that we will always treasure. You can cook and eat and play with the locals or be served by them in a 5 star hotel - the choice for us has become obvious because of our experience at Channa's angkor Homestay.

Response from the owner This lovely family from Florida, USA was actually the first real family with smaller children we have had here, and especially their son and our Anita really had a wonderful time together. They just bonded instantly! Recently we have had another American family with THREE children (all approximately same age as ours) staying for six nights, and again a resounding success. This time Amanda found herself a new pal in their daughter, and just a few days ago she sat down and wrote her an email. We hope to receive many more such great families here with their wonderful children from all over the world. Thank you for staying with us, and all the best :-)
