“A perfect getaway from our crazy world”
This was our second visit to Rowan Cottage and even more deeply enjoyable than our previous visit in 2011. It is a marvellous location for chilling out and exploring south Loch Ness-side. It has everything we need for a self-catering holiday - good facilities for cooking, for washing and drying, and for watching our Dvds - but also a sense of remoteness so we can get away from the usual rat-race of urban living. There is an excellent village shop and cafe a couple of miles away in Foyers, and a large range of facilities (supermarkets, petrol station, restaurants) in Fort augustus, 16 miles to the south (but a very pleasant 16 miles as the usually quiet road winds its way through and over hills south of Loch Ness). Foyers and Fort augustus are also great places to view the Loch. The old Foyers Pier is accessible by road and gives good views of the middle part of the Loch and especially Foyers Bay, where boats travelling along the Loch often anchor for a while. Fort augustus is even better with Caledonian Canal providing both a small and well-used harbour, and a grand spectacle as boats travelling beyond Loch Ness travel up and down the staircase of locks that is the village centre. This time we were blessed with warm sunny weather - indeed at times too hot. But that weather added to the sense of relaxation in that we did not have to worry about heating or warm clothes, and could enjoy the Cottage's wonderful veranda. This has an indoor and outdoor section so you can choose where best suits you to sit at any time - and then read or sleep or just watch the marvellous view across the woods to the mountains north of the Loch. The great weather meant that we could sit on the veranda and watch the sunset (it faces west) whilst drinking something suitably Scottish. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Rowan Cottage and are already thinking on opportunities to visit again. We can strongly recommend it as place to escape and relax.
Response from the owner Dear Mike Thank you for taking the time to write a review - we are so pleased that you enjoyed yourselves. Can't take any credit for the weather unfortunately! (I wish we could guarantee good weather for everyone, but then variety in weather is part of Scotland's charm .) Haste ye back! Janet
“A relaxed escape to the country”
If you have never been to Loch Ness and the surrounding areas, Alex & Janet's little hideaway is absolutely perfect as a base. No detail was overlooked: directions, Welcome pack of biscuits & chocolates which our kids loved, Separated packs of information with walks and local interests, even dog treats they understand hospitality to the letter. A home from home you only need to bring some food or pop to Tesco/Asda which was a reasonable 20miles ish at Inverness. The location was perfect we were within reach of Inverness, Fort agustus and the Fall of Foyers, which was our primary visit, and on a clear night which we were lucky to have one the night sky is something to see. If you are a family looking for walks we found that the forestry commission walks were best as they were marked out by difficulty and colour coded posts throughout the chosen walk (avoids embarrassing moments of getting lost). For us it was a break to escape the typical 'busy' life and a chance to reconnect with each other as a family with some board games (take some) and country air.
Response from the owner Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review for us. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay - and we'll get some more board games!
“Peace and Quiet”
The owner is very friendly and welcoming (incl gifts!). The house is spotlessly clean. The bed is very comfortable, All you could need in the kitchen. Great views from the conservatory and from the covered decking. Background storage heating would have been an advantage (electric panel heaters and oil filled radiators only).
“Dog owners paradise”
What a fantastic place to stay. It is one of the places we love going to,and hate having to leave. The welcome from Janet and alex is allways warm and friendly, and their knowledge of the local country and history will make sure you find all the interesting places which could be easily be missed. The cottage is very well appointed, and has everything you need to keep you comfortable, there is also a good selection of books, dvd's and games to keep everyone happy. I titled this review dog owners paradise, well behaved dogs will just love this place, they are safe in the grounds around the cottage and the area is surrounded by numerous forrest trails and walks within walking and short driving distance. The cottage is also a great base for visiting the numerous tourist attractions the Highlands have to offer

“Glorious Peace and Tranquility”
What a fantastic, peaceful weekend with a wonderful warm Scottish welcome including whisky and shortbread. My friends were having breakfast out on the porch when a stag jumped past - what a treat! The setting is amazing - it is a real rural Highland reatreat and yet only a short drive into Inverness. I would highly recommend this to all - couples groups of friends families...
“Our own piece of civilised "splendid isolation"”
Lovely traditional chalet . Unspoilt. Sensitivly modernised with all one needed for a family holiday. Safe freedom for children. Very welcoming atmosphere, warm with superb views of the expansive Scottish landscape. Wonderful sunset views. Deer grazing nearby.Yet amazingly this propery is close to good roads with many places of interest nearby. Exceptionally helpful hosts, with unique knowledge of the area.
We really loved this cottage the people are wonderful, the cottage is a delight, and we are definitly going back, there are lots of walks, the views are stunning, we can not think of a single negitive thing to say about this trip... You must also get a massage before you leave,, heaven.. Janet and alex are lovely people, very welcoming...
“Relaxing Rowan Cottage”
Arriving on a lovely sunny afternoon and with the only noise being the sound of a distant cuckoo to welcome us, was just wonderful. It felt as though the cottage had been specially prepared for us with lovely little touches such as local shortbread and a wee dram, chocolates, flowers in every room and even treats for our dog awaiting us - how lovely! Rowan Cottage is perfectly situated for exploring the local area and we enjoyed several local walks amongst stunning scenery, as well as day trips out to the Moray Firth and the Isle of Skye. Both these trips were well worth doing and we enjoyed fabulous scenery as well as spotting various wildlife including:- dolphins, seals, red deer, red squirrels, sea eagles and an osprey - wow! (Thanks to Janet for her advice on the best routes to take!) All in all, we really enjoyed our time at the cottage, and it was so enjoyable to be able to sit and relax in the conservatory overlooking the open space and forest, whilst enjoying a quiet relaxing drink in the evenings - hardly watched the television all week! A very relaxing and comfortable stay. Thank you Janet and alex
