"La Trouvaille"--A True Find in Delightful Sablet

"La Trouvaille" is a genuine find in the delightful village of Sablet, only 12km from Vaison-la-Romaine. Built into the 12th-century ramparts of the medieval village center, this beautiful old Provencal stone house serves as a local landmark because of the hole in the wall--'le trou'--which creates the terrace. Ideal for visitors who want to feel the pulse of village life, this house has a florist a and "boulangerie" as neighbors.

Throughout, the beauty of walls of locally-quarried stone, traditional Provençal ceilings of plaster and dark exposed beams, and handsome traditional tiles give “La Trouvaille” its special warmth and character. The house is spacious and inviting, providing an unusual degree of privacy with separate relaxation areas on each floor.

Furnishings reflect the owners' enthusiasm for Provençal style and regional crafts. Handsome antiques, shabby chic “finds” and quality reproductions are placed alongside comfortable leather sofas and more casual seating. Owners have taken special care to add modern comforts, while sacrificing none of the house's Provençal charm.

A shaded terrace is cut into the stone facade of the house and faces east with fine views of the clay rooftops, vine-covered hillsides, the neighbouring village of Seguret and the dramatic limestone ridges of the Dentelles de Montmirail. A round table, chairs & gas grill invite "al fresco" dining. Relax on the antique daybed with cushions in a cheerful Provençal fabric. This terrace provides shelter from the hot mid-day sun, as well as protection from winds or occasional rain, enabling guests to spend more time enjoying the views.

The entrance on the ground floor opens into a large dining and gathering area with great character and Provençal charm. The kitchen is well-designed and equipped for preparing a gourmet meal or a casual picnic to be enjoyed on the terrace or outdoor in the hills among the vines. A handsome antique oak farm table seats 6-8. Colorful pottery for cooking and serving.

Adjoining the kitchen is a den and extra sleeping area. The comfortable daybed converts into a pull-out queen-sized bed. The entertainment center features a 42” flat panel television and Blue-ray home theater system for music and video. In addition there are two comfortable chairs and good reading lamps. A small desk holds the Livebox WiFi router, phone, and printer. Internet-based phone service makes it possible to offer guests FREE international calling to landlines, as well as U.S. and Canadian cell phones. WiFi is provided throughout the house.

In addition to the den on the ground floor, there is a quiet and elegant sitting room on the top floor that opens onto the terrace. One bedroom also offers a leather sofa and chairs.

Two beautiful tiled full bathrooms with shower & WC.

Unlike many surrounding villages, Sablet's center is not bisected by a major roadway, so the round medieval center is refreshingly free of most vehicle traffic and strolling the narrow spiraling streets and stairs to the 11th century church and its little park at the top of the village is a delight. Place du Barry provides a splendid view of rooftops, vineyards and provides an orientation table that identifies villages in the distant hills.

Sablet's small grocer has a surprising selection of goods, including fresh local produce, cheese and deli offerings, local wines. A fish vendor's van visits on Thursday mornings, and often a goat cheese vendor as well. Friday morning's small market features Italian specialties, Moroccan couscous, farm-fresh local produce, fresh roasting chickens, and local baked and prepared goods. There are several larger grocery stores in the area. Closest are Super U and Intermarché in Vaison la Romaine; Grand Frais in Orange has fine foods, organic products and out-of-season fruits and vegetables.

Convenient ATM.

Medical services in the village include a pharmacy, physicians office, and a dentist. Closest hospitals are in Vaison-la-Romaine and Orange.

Sablet's helpful tourist office also features an excellent tasting room for sampling the products of 18+ wine producers and during summer months posts weekly tours of local wineries. The wine villages of Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Rasteau, Cairanne are in close proximity and Chateauneuf de Pape is only 20km away.

Sablet is uniquely situated to provide easy access to many attractions in the Vaucluse. Explore Roman ruins or attend a live production in an antique theater in Vaison or Orange. Visit a different Provençal market every day of the week, including our favorites in Vaison-la-Romaine, Bedoin, and Ste.-Cecile-les-Vignes. Take a lovely stroll to Seguret or picnic on the hillsides. Ride a bicycle among the vines or challenge yourself to ride or hike to the summit of Mont Ventoux--a classic Tour de France route. Search for treasures at a local "vide grenier" or the famous antiques market in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

“Terrific apartment in great location”

Reviewed 27 Dec 2013

We spent 22 days and it was still not long enough. The owners, Deb and Doug, were extremely helpful with our booking and provided a wealth of information before our arrival. We felt at home the minute we stepped in. It was charming and very well maintained. It is equipped with all modern conveniences. The terrace was the best place to enjoy a glass of wine and take in the views. The gas grill on the terrace was great for our evening meals. It's location in the village is so convenient. The bakery, cafe and grocer were all within a few steps from the front door. We rented bikes from Ventoux Bikes in Malaucène, about 25 min from Sablet. The rental prices were reasonable with friendly, helpful service. They also spoke English. We can't wait to book our next stay.

“Charming house in a charming village”

Reviewed 26 Sep 2013

The owners have left no stone unturned in providing for the comfort of their guests. Easy parking nearby. Well-equipped kitchen with gas grill on the terrace. Perfectly suited for two couples with a bedroom and sitting area on each of the top two floors. The unique hole-in-the-wall terrace offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and protection from the elements. Shopkeepers were amazingly friendly and patient with our poor French language skills. Le Pain Medieval Boulangerie Patisserie is the best. Walk to the nearby village of Seguret.

“Living in the heart of a magical village is a painters paradise.”

My husband and I stayed a week in this cozy and comfortable house. We loved to sit on the raised terrace and watch the light play across the buildings around the town square. The view is amazing--looking across vineyards to the hillside village of Seguret on one side and the Dentelle mountains off in the distance could not be better. Grilling local meats and vegetables and tasting fine wines made for some great evenings on the terrace. I never slept so well in my comfortable bedroom and great sitting area. Kitchen has everything we needed. The whole house seems to be totally done with taste and much thought. Everything was immaculate. Villagers were friendly and tolerant of poor french skills. We enjoyed the bakeries, cafe and market day. I really got a taste of living in Sablet, rather than being just a tourist. We enjoyed touring the many villages nearby, but always felt we had the best spot at our house. The walking nearby is amazing. Hiking up the ridge offers views to the valley, vineyards and Dentelle mtns. I found a week to short of a stay to do it all. I was able to paint about the village and along the vineyards. Rainy days I could work on the patio. This is a plein air painters dream house. I came home with some work and many fond memories. I will be coming back some day.

This house is both charming and updated and it's beautifully maintained. The terrace is the best - no matter the weather - with gorgeous views of the village and the distant hill and villages at the same time. It's location in the village is so convenient: a creperie, bakery, cafe, grocery and the village square all within a few steps - literally. We loved it!
