mango ridge ocean view cottages port antonio jam..

three secluded cottages nestled in the jungled foothills overlooking the sleepy market town of port antonio on jamaicas northeast coast.Walking distance to craft and produce markets and the transportation center where local route taxis take you to nearby beaches..or hiking and rafting excursions in the nearby blue mountain national park. The property is densely fruited with mango, banana avocado, papaya, and soursop trees..wild parrots, hummingbirds and many other birds endemic to jamaica are daily visitors... the cottages are 100,200,and 300 steps up a steep hill,so a certain level of fitness is advisable.comfortable, lightweight, walking shoes with good grip on wet surfaces are advisable...running water is not hot unless u choose to heat it on the stove..the air is conditioned by fans and sea breezes.situated as we are in the rainforest, you will encounter mosquitos, ants and lizards..sometimes in your room...beds are covered with mosquito netting..long pants/socks are advisable early evenings..some visitors need a nite or two to get used to the sounds of early morning roosters ,dogs, parrots and woodpeckers..linens provided...jamaicans are a loud and boisterous people who sometime give visitors the impression that they are about to fight ..dont worry..its just normal behavior..lots of huffing and for loud music..its hard to escape anywhere in jamaica..maybe an all inclusive hotel..but then u wake up in the morning to the sound of weedwackers...port antonio people by and large do not depend on tourists,so they live their lives without that restraint on their love of loud music.many people prefer the top cottage but it has its drawbacks..100 more steps to carry provisions..bathroom is downstairs bedroom up..some people dont sleep well first night if it rains loudly on the bears repeating, long pants an.d socks are helpful in the evenings to deter mosquitoes...i would go as far as to say that if you are allergic to insect bites, this rainforest environment might not be the best choice for you..finally,a tip on luggage..suitcases are impractical due to the steep terrain and distance from the car park..backpacks are a better option..and a final tip..many places in jamaica, including mango ridge are not easy to find after dark..our lane is across from the sunrise tavern..sommerstown rd..just up from the adventist church.

Very Good

“What a treat”

Reviewed 15 Dec 2011

I stayed at mango ridge and had a wonderful time. The cottages were perfectly comfortable, the view is terrific and the owner is a pleasure. He can hook you up with people to help show you the true Port antonio. Plus the stair way up to the place is a great workout! I will absolutely stay there again if I am lucky enough to make it back to lovely Port antonio.

“The Right Place for the Right Traveler”

Reviewed 7 Dec 2011

For the adventure traveler who finds charm in the rustic, this place is a great value. Compared to resort expectations, it is thin on amenities, but I've been here twice and have always found it comfortable and very friendly. Insects are an issue, but they weren't bad enough to dampen my stay at all. It all depends on what for you equals comfort and what minimal amenities you feel you need. The best thing to do is just to call and ask questions to see if this meets your desires. It certainly met mine. The cabins were clean with nice touches and sit on the side of a hill. There is a steep climb up a path of stone stairs to the cabins, but once you are up there you are rewarded with a beautiful view of the town below and the bay beyond. I found the view along with the jungle-like setting with its many fruit trees to be inspiring and a great place to write. There generally is pleasant breeze that makes even a hot day feel comfortable, and while it can rain quite a bit at times, it is often short and it still manages to have a lot of sun. The town is noisy, often into the night, but there were also regular periods of quiet and calm. While this town is off the beaten path from some of the more well-known tourist areas, many Jamaicans I met from around the island said Port antonio and the surrounding parish of Portland is their favorite place in Jamaica. I can see why. It has interesting sights and potential adventures, and again, for the right kind of traveler this is a great deal.

“True experience of what you envision heaven to be”

Reviewed 5 Dec 2011

The personalized service was beyond expectation, from the fishes in the home made pond, the birds in the trees, the animals in the distance, being able to watch the stars from your bedroom, and the boats as they come and go in the harbour was a breathtaking experience. The fact I could walk to the town, to the supermarket, the craft markets and other stores made my experience less challenging and more adventorous. Overall it was a great experience. Will be taking my family there next year
