“Magical”

Reviewed 14 Nov 2014

There really aren't enough superlatives for Surangana - a truly magical place. As you pass through the gates it's almost like stepping into a different realm. The house itself is a stunning collection of colonial features and furniture, opening out onto expansive verandahs and gardens on which to feast the eyes and ears; expect monkeys swinging overhead as you tuck into your morning hoppers, as well as two, four and six-legged visitors to your outdoor bathroom! Manoj and his team are attentive without being overbearing, always on hand to see to your every need, and you'll leave having made five new friends (actually seven, including Frank and Cloudy the dogs). The food, freshly prepared every day by the incomparable Priyangika, is Michelin-starred quality. Your only worry at Surangana will be summoning the effort to tear yourself away from such tranquil, idyllic surroundings to explore the local delights, of which there are a dizzying plenitude. Highly recommended.

“One of my best holiday experiences”

Reviewed 13 Nov 2014

I am so glad I got to experience real Sri Lanka at the Surangana. A marvellous friendly and relaxed way to dip a toe into Sri Lankan culture. The staff, led by Manoj, are all happy to attend to every our need in an unobtrusive and pleasant way. The food was so good we didn't bother going out in the evenings. It was like having your own luxury restaurant among the trees. The amenities were very good with wifi and satellite TV if you feel the need. Plenty of books and games around if you dont. The accommodation is elegantly furnished and kept in super condition by the staff. I dont have any bad things to mention and the whole experience exceeded my expectations. I do hope I get the chance to go back soon.

“Great house, great location”

Reviewed 25 Mar 2014

We have just returned from two weeks at Surangana and had an amazing time. I know all the reviews have raved about Manoj and the team but they really are that good. We took our two daughters (aged 10 months and three years old) and they couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful. One morning we gave the three year old the choice of coming to the beach with us or staying behind, naturally she choose to spend the morning in the kitchen chatting to Priya (the cook). The setting and the villa itself is fantastic with wonderful views and no real sounds from the outside world to shatter the illusion that you're not in the jungle or for that matter playing out a colonial fantasy. I'm pretty sure that would not have been the case had we stayed in one of the beach side villas five minutes away. The food needs a separate paragraph because it is fantastic. We couldn't have got bored with the menu and are still suffering withdrawal symptoms from all the spices that were used. So much effort goes in to each meal. Before I run out of superlatives I should warn future guests not to engage in a game of cricket with Manoj or Sanjeeva unless you're currently playing first class cricket. Quite rapid with the ability to move the ball both ways. Thanks for a genuinely great time. The holiday bar has been raised to unrealistic levels.

“One extremely satisfied customer!”

We stayed at Surangana and had the most wonderful time. We have stayed in many villas around SE asia and this ranks up with the best. When on holiday there are certain priorities that I look for - lovely accomodation, excellent service and good food. Surangana ticked all the boxes. The villa is spacious, comfortable, homely, colonial in style and in the most wonderful setting with views across the valley and all the wildlife that goes with the rural surroundings. It is truly like living in a zoo! The staff are confident in the work they do and the service they provide and so, by the end of a week, they have become your friends. Nothing is too difficult and, to be honest, you could turn up with no plans at all and Manoj, the Manager, would provide the very best itinerary with all transport laid on. The food too was masterful - almost no need to go out and certainly better than most restaurants! If you are a dog lover then you will feel really at home but if not they can be quietly kept away. Galle is only 20 mins away, with the beach 10 mins down the road, so you have all the amenities of the towns and coastline but still get to enjoy the peace and quiet of a rural villa setting. Look no further, book now! You certainly won't be disappointed unless you are wanting the super modern glass and steel villa style of living. This is a beautiful, original, old Colonial home and absolutely right for a Sri Lankan holiday.

“The perfect place!”

Reviewed 16 Nov 2013

We came to Surangama for a family celebration & it was absolutely perfect! Manoj heads up a great team where nothing is too much trouble & everything works seemlessly. We loved having the 2 dogs Cloudy & Frank around - they really made it feel like home! The villa itself is tranquil & beautiful - cool verandas & comfy siting room & the pool beautifully cool. The area is full of wildlife, peacocks & monkeys daily & some invisible but tuneful tropical birds! Manoj & the team cooked some absolutely delicious Sri Lankan meals & the candlelight BBQ by the pool was really special. We hired scooters as well as using the tuktuk & got around well. The weather in November was just right - hot but not over humid - very pleasant particularly in the evenings & the villa always has a cool breeze running through it. All in all I couldn't recommend highly enough if you are looking for a holiday to remember for ever. Nb: the team are all cricket crazy so always ready to play!

“A Slice of Paradise”

It's hard to overestimate the uplifting effect that the luxury and elegance offered at Surangana bestows on its lucky visitors. From the moment you enter through the villa's front gates, and sweep up towards the lawn and open verandas that wrap around the house, you get the sense that space and time are, after all, on your side, allowing real relaxation to immediately kick in. Gone are the bustling reminders of the outside world. You are instantly immersed in the sights and sounds of an exotic natural world, of monkeys, birds and the chirp of insects, framed in every direction by the classical colonial architectural features, furnishings and vista points that invite tranquility and rest. There's plenty on offer for younger family members too, with a full state-of-the-art home entertainment system, Dvds, games, music, books, computer, plus high-speed broadband connection for keeping in touch with the outside world (if you really must!). The grandeur of the four-poster beds, swathed in mosquito nets help prevent any intrusion by unwelcome insects, with outdoor patio bathroom framed with lush frangipani added to the out-of-this-world sensuality of the setting. The sheer hospitality would put any five-star restaurant to shame - every meal a fragrant and delicious experience, with exceptional service and meticulous attention to detail from the villa's super-friendly staff (don't worry - the infinity pool and table tennis will come in handy for working off any extra pounds, as will trips to the unspoilt golden beaches nearby). Two weeks flew by far too quickly, and yet the memory of Surangana remains an unforgettable and transporting experience. Highly recommended!

“A truly beautiful place to stay with 5 star service”

The beautiful colonial styled villa is a haven set within the lush Sri Lankan trees surrounded by wild monkeys (who do not bother you) and beautiful exotic birds. It is such a peaceful place, perfect to relax in and big enough not to feel like you are on top of each other. The staff are all wonderful; they are so kind and friendly and it was a pleasure to get to know them. The food is out of this world, the best food I have ever had on a holiday. I highly recommend this place and hope to go back again.

“The best holiday ever!”

What an amazing place - this really was the best holiday i've ever had, the villa, the people, the food, we felt like Kings and Queens for 10 days! I highly recommend for literally anyone who wants a break in the sun - there is something for everyone and the villa provides the perfect place to relax in between in the most beautiful setting. Already planning to go back!

We stayed 8 nights at this lovely colonial style villa staffed by lovely people. The house is truly amazing. The staff led by Manoj is very kind arranged everything we needed. They also cook for you and do the shopping. After the experience we had I will find it very hard staying in a hotel again.
