“Nice house in a mountain setting”

Reviewed 18 Jul 2017

The house was cozy and quite clean in most regards, and pretty flowers and a bottle of wine welcomed us. There was some confusion on pricing and availability. Tim responded to our request for Friday and Saturday night stay by setting a higher price because he said he didn't usually rent for two nights, although I don't believe he indicated a 3-night minimum. However, when I responded that we couldn't afford the higher price, he lowered it to slightly below the original price. Some issues negatively affected my wife and daughter and to some extent, myself The house had a strong smell- possibly due, in part, to previous animals - and large piles of magazines under the coffee table surface created a moldy odor. The porch furniture and the chair in the master bedroom were all in terrible shape. The bathroom mats were badly stained and perhaps dirty, and there were no washcloths. A few two month old newspapers cast about on the porch added to the unappealing effect. The refrigerator was clean, but the freezer was very dirty. There were some roaches in the cabinets - not obvious but unappealing. Also, the description lists a stocked pond, but doesn't explain that you're expected to return any fish you catch to the pond, which you find out when you rent. I think if you're not too picky, the house is a good deal for the money, and in general, may be appealing. However, if you're pretty sensitive, I'd look elsewhere.

“Romantic, secluded hideaway”

Reviewed 2 Jan 2017

We rented this cabin between Christmas and New Year's for a quiet, secluded, romantic getaway. It fit the bill. We relished in the limited cell phone service (Verizon worked better than ATT), no cable, the woodburning stove and perfect quiet. We did not lack for anything in the kitchen, there were plenty of linens and towels provided. The cabin is nothing fancy but comfortable and cozy. The driveway is absolutely fine, although steep. The location is perfectly situated between Asheville and Black Mountain (our favorite). The owner was a pleasure to deal with. We will return!

Response from the owner Greetings Christine & Fam, thank you for the visit and review. So glad you spent your holidays here - see ya'll again soon. cheers, timothy

Clean, comfortable, easy to work with. Perfect size, very secluded, I would recommend this place an I plan on reserving it in the future.

“Good place to relax and be alone.”

Reviewed 16 Sep 2016

My wife and I rented this for 5 days and was happy with the overall experience. I gave the rental only 4 stars instead of 5 due to a few small problems. Those problems being that the listing said there was a phone and TV there. At this time there is no phone there. The listing is correct in that there is a TV there. But, what I did not know was that to use it I had to bring a laptop or other smart device that can connect to the HDMI cable that connects it to the TV and sound system. Needless to say we left our lap top home because we did not know that we needed it to watch TV. The other issue is the driveway leading from the gate to the house. Before renting the property, I read the reviews and many said that t e4 while drive is not needed to reach the house. That is true but it is steep and not paved except for loose rock. you must get up some speed and not slow down or you will not make it to the top. My new Chevy Cruze would go up and down but the frame of my car would scrape the ground at the top of the drive as I entered the parking area at the top. So basically it can be driven in a car that does not have 4 wheel drive but if your car is low to the ground, you should consider deriving something that has greater ground clearance. Those were the only problems we encountered during our 5 day stay. The house was clean and nice. The deck is nice. Total privacy if that is what you are looking for. From the house you can't see the main road or any other homes. There is plenty of woods to explore if you wish to. All appliances worked well. The issues I mentioned I told the owner about and he assured me that changes would be made to the listing accordingly. I got a good feeling about this and would definitely rent this property again.

“Perfect couples getaway: private and quaint”

Reviewed 14 Nov 2014

My girlfriend and I stayed here for a 3-day weekend in May 2014 and could have stayed much longer. We also would have been perfectly content not leaving the property. We may have spent more time outdoors than in. Much of our time was spent lounging in the yard, rocking on the rocking chairs on the covered porch, sunning on large patio, fishing by the ponds, playing like children on the rope swing, and walking the trails on the property. We did do some cooking and enjoyed the PEACEFUL atmosphere. Additionally,--what's not included in the description--is the HOT TUB. It's literally a cast iron tub that you fill with water and light a fire under to heat it. It was so cute and fun to prepare. We did make our way to a brewery in Swannanoa and a couple in downtown Ashville, which we thoroughly enjoyed, and we also walked the trails at Warren Wilson. All was very close and easy to get to; however, the property was plenty to keep us entertained and happy. Great place. Highly recommend!

“Relaxing and quiet, off-the-beaten-path.”

Reviewed 17 Apr 2013

We rented KinderHook for a family vacation, three generations. The location was great except for the 26 curve road in and out. When renting we thought it slept six, however the sofa couch wasn't very comfortable. My children enjoyed playing with Sascatoon, the resident cat. If you don't plan on going out much, we suggest you grocery shop before arriving. Our older generation felt the cleaning crew could clean more thorough. We would rent KinderHook again.

“Jim Pierce's”

I now have stayed twice in the last month . My G/F and I were looking for a location close to asheville and its areas many resources, hiking, biking , dining. The best surprise was that it was surrounded by forests with old farm roads to walk up. A very rural mountainous area. The back of the house which sits on a small mountain was great. The front slopes down and is sectioned in tiers to a small creek with 3 ponds ( creek fed). Margo and I loved it. We did the travel to the areas for the hiking and spent one day in asheville. My next trip was a week or so later with my 2 sons 11 and 10. Now it became heaven of another sort ... It snowed for 3 days . These two didn't have the benefit of my northern upbringing. The snow was heaven to them. The slopes were a playground. Tim's shed has a collection of items and had several sled type toys . Now these two rough house characters were having a blast. My Lab pup with them . When I asked if they wanted to go to asheville ..unanimous no .. We walked the roads saw the small waterfalls as the creek goes down the mountains . We had a great time . They didn't want to come back to South Florida . We will go back . Spring in the mountains is great also as is summer and fall . Tim is a great host . The house is a very comfortable fit ., yes I would recommend it. For family and as a romantic place to enjoy.

Response from the owner Hello JIM & Fam, So glad you had an adventurous week and the boys were raring to go al-a-Nature. Adding tiny livestock and 3 GLAMping (Glamor Camping) sites this Spring - please bring a group up to enjoy some fishing. "today is the tomorrow from yesterday," tim

“Serene weekend”

Reviewed 5 Nov 2012

My boyfriend and I had a lovely time at this peaceful cabin. It is very spacious and nice. Enjoyed the mural on the wall, the quiet atmosphere, and the abundance of reading materials and brochures relating to the area. Also we were very happy to have free Wifi so we could plan out our trips into and around asheville. It is not far to downtown and very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The drive up to the cabin is winding and steep, which can be intimidating to those of us from flat states! (We are from Florida) We quickly got used to it though. Owner is prompt to reply with emails and calls. He even offered to come out and help us when we almost got the car stuck in the driveway! The driveway is very steep and the car didn't make it over the top into the parking area so we tried to back it down and got the tires stuck in the little rut next to the driveway. We were able to get out and all was fine but we never did attempt that again and chose instead to walk up the hill. This is more likely due to our inexperience with mountain driving and I expect most people would not have a problem. We would definitely stay here again, it is a great value and pet friendly!

“Great Writer's Retreat”

Reviewed 5 Sep 2012

I spent two weeks at Kinderhook Hollow to work on a writing project. It was a wonderful place for the seclusion I needed. There were great spaces inside and outside to work and to relax when I needed a break. I enjoyed being able to sit on the deck and porch and watch the hummingbirds and butterflies while I worked. The surrounding area was perfect for private walks when I needed to take a break and get the ideas flowing. Tim was very easy to work with in scheduling my visit. He was quick to reply and was very friendly. He left a nice bottle of wine and fresh flowers as a welcome. He also checked in mid-visit to make sure things were going okay. He provided the perfect balance of making sure I knew he was available if I needed anything and respecting my privacy. Overall, Kinderhook Hollow felt like a welcoming, cozy retreat versus a sterile hotel or vacation rental, which was exactly what I wanted.
