“A chance to really see Southern Mexico at human scale and pace”

Reviewed 24 Dec 2013

B & B Rancho Pitaya was easily our most lasting memory of our time in Oaxaca. The rooms are pleasant and comfortable, with private bath. The meals were outstanding and were easily the best of our entire two weeks in the region. Don't miss the margaritas! The overall feel of the Rancho is relaxed and real. We rode three days in a row and each ride was unique. The opportunity to see many different views from farmers working their fields in the traditional manner, horse and burro-drawn wagons, trees full of eagles and beautiful views of the valley was outstanding. The rides fit anyone of any level of prior equestrian experience. The only downside is lack of internet connection but even that is possible with a temporary hotspot from Mary Jane's cell phone. They can arrange other site-seeing opportunities from the ranch and even take you to the airport for an early morning flight.

“Absolutely unforgettable in the best way possible!”

Reviewed 19 Jun 2013

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to spend a couple of nights at Rancho Pitaya with a dear friend from australia, who has visited previously. I loved every facet of my visit, including the meticulously cared-for animals (the horses are truly magnificent), the comfort of the room, the overall ambience of the location, the fabulous food and above all, the true hospitality of our lovely hosts! Plenty to do there, or not, as your heart desires. I shall definitely be returning. Thank you so much, MaryJane and Bobby! K.G.

Response from the owner Dear K We really appreciate you taking the time to write a review. When you come back next time we look forward to doing more rides, exploring farther afield, with you! Mary Jane, Bobby and everyone at Rancho Pitaya

“Even better than last time!”

Reviewed 2 Jun 2013

I've come across the Pacific for my second stay, this time with a friend who lives in america. We had a ball involving ourselves in the Ranch's animals and routines, as well as another wonderful horse ride the mountains. The food is as good as ever, the Margaritas delicious, and there is such a feeling of well-being at the end of each day. Next time, for sure, I must stay longer because it is so relaxing yet exhilarating. Mary Jane and Bobby are ever the hosts with the "mostest", not the smallest detail gets overlooked. Hasta la próxima, you guys!

Response from the owner Dear Alison, Thanks so much for taking the time to write this review. It's always good to hear what guests liked but don't worry about offending us to mention how we could make things even better. We look forward to your next visit! Mary Jane, Bobby and all of us at Rancho Pitaya

“Return to Rancho Pitaya”

Reviewed 2 Mar 2013

This is the third time my husband and I have been to Rancho Pitaya and the experience is always wonderful. Mary Jane and Bobby are so accommodating and treat you like family. The scenery is spectacular, and the food and accommodations are great. We had a perfect, relaxing time. This is the place to go in Mexico for an experience you will always remember. And like me, you'll want to return.

Response from the owner Thank's for taking the time to write this review. It's wonderful to have guests return and feel tourism turn into friendships.

“Wonderful, beautiful and lovely visit.”

Reviewed 1 Mar 2013

This was my second stay with MaryJane and Bobby, some of the sweetest and best hosts you can ever hope for, and it was just as fantastic as the first time. The location for their new ranch is just at the outskirts of a small village, approximately 20 minutes drive from Oaxaca, and it has some wonderful views over the valley. There are only three rooms which makes your stay so much more personal and relaxing and you get to feel like you are a member of their lovely family. The rooms are spacious and really beautifully decorated and with a supercomfortable king size bed, we slept like babies! Our room also had a coffee pot and a fridge with water, beer an sodas. The breakfast and dinners were included and once more, I had some of the best Oaxacan food there, so delicious! And their sunset Margaritas, without doubt the best in Mexico.:-) Really miss sitting content on their terracce sipping to that perfectly mixed drink, seeing the sun set over the valley and changing the colours of the landscape, while chatting with the lovely hosts and other guests. Memorable! This is the perfect place for outdoor activities. Mountain bikes are available at the ranch and with them you can easily explore the surrounding little villages. Beautiful hikes in the mountains are possible just as you leave the ranch, and the area is also interesting for birdwatchers. But the main activity is of course the horse excursions. Longer or shorter rides, for amateurs or more trained, they have the horses and the guide for whatever you might wish. This time I travelled with my fiance who (with his previous 10 min riding experience and fear of horses) very reluctantly agreed to take a ride, but after a couple of hours on an Mexican cavalry horse and with Bobby as a guide, he felt so comfortable that next time he wants to take two rides! We both really loved our visit and will for sure be back. Hugs Poul & Ann-Charlotte

Response from the owner It is so nice having guests return, especially people as open and enthusiastic are you both are. Thanks for taking the time to write this review and wishing you continued happy travels. Hasta la próxima.

“friendly, relaxing, beautiful, delicious”

Staying at Rancho Pitaya was like going to visit friendly cousins living abroad. Mary Jane and her family made me feel right at home. The room was very spacious, very comfortable, and nicely decorated. The food and drinks were amazing. The horses were beautiful and fantastic. The rides were full of incredible views and good conversation. Go visit!

Response from the owner It was a real pleasure having you stay with us. Riding with you was great fun as well. Come back and join us for one of our riding expeditions in the Sierra Juarez or canyon of Cuicatlan.

“Wonderful horseback riding and a great base for explorations”

Reviewed 25 Feb 2013

We stayed at Rancho Pitaya for four nights. It made a great base of operation for touring to Mitla, Tomitlan del Valle, and other sites, using a taxi based near the ranch - didn't have to deal with the traffic getting in and out of Oaxaca to make these visits. The food was great, freshly made at every meal, basically Mexican cuisine but with Mary Jane's North american judgement of what would appeal. The casitas are new, beautifully built, nicely decorated - really lovely. We did several half day rides around the ranch, and a longer ride near the archeological site of Yagul. All great experiences. Beautifully trained, strong horses, and wonderful scenery - there can't be a better way to see the Valley of Oaxaca.

Response from the owner So glad to hear Rancho Pitaya held up to your expectations. Your wife asked about recipes and here's th one for our Rancho Pitaya Margarita. Wipe rims of glasses with lime juice and immediately dip in sea salt. Add to blender bowl 1/2 cup each Tequila reposada, Cointreau, fresh lime juice + 1/4 cup simple syrup ( equal parts sugar dissolved in water). To this amount of liquid add equal parts ice. Blend to smooth and icy. Pour and enjoy
