Achill Island boasts some of the finest beaches in Ireland, including no fewer than five Blue Flag beaches. Achill, on Ireland's wild Atlantic coast, provides a haven for watersport activities of all types. The Atlantic Drive comprises over 40km of breathtaking coastal scenery that is ideal for touring in a car, and even better by bicycle! On route for the Atlantic Drive is the Tower at Kildavnet, the remains of a 16th century Irish tower house that was used by the legendary pirate queen.
Achill has the highest sea cliffs in Europe which makes Achill a hill walker's paradise.
The Great Western Greenway is a 42km long track for cyclists, walkers and runners which follows the route of the former Achill to Westport railway line. The Achill end of the Greenway starts at Achill Sound.
Visit The Deserted Village at Slievemore consists of some 80 - 100 stone cottages located along a mile long stretch of road on the southern slopes of Slievemore mountain. While some of these dwellings were occupied as summer 'booley' homes within living memory, the area itself is rich in archaeological artefacts including megalithic tombs dating from the Neolithic period some 5,000 years ago. Local field systems and site remnants indicate that settlement in this area dates from at least early Mediaval times. Or just chill out with a book , glass of wine and a roaring turf fire.
