“Upscale resort with great views and food, convenient to town”

Reviewed 16 Mar 2015

Despite having heard great things, I was pleasantly surprised upon arriving at Villas de Palermo, and particularly upon entering our specific unit. It's BIG, nicely appointed (full kitchen with modern appliances, wifi, etc.) and gloriously air-conditioned. Nice as our unit was, we spent a lot of time poolside, at the bar watching soccer on the big screen TV and learning Spanish from the very friendly staff (who also speak very good English, in general), sipping locally styled cocktails and munching on tasty appetizers or soaking up sun. The food is very good at the resort but I recommend going into town for dinner to get more variety, bang for your buck and sightseeing. Plan on getting a cab (basically anyone with a car) to get back from town during the evening, usually for a reasonable price (though 2-4 times the daylight price of about $2-3 one way). I walked or ran between the resort and town more than once, but it's not what most people would call walkable. I was told it's unnecessarily risky to walk, especially at night, but never had an issue.

“Beautiful views, beautiful resort”

Reviewed 18 Sep 2014

The villas provided a wonderful place to stay in San Juan del Sur. The views are beautiful. This villa has a perfect view of the bay and the entire town of San Juan Del Sur. You're provided with all the basics: a couple couches, beds, decent showers, and a full kitchen (which we pretty much only used for booze). The couches were not particularly comfortable, especially considering the cushions aren't attached so you eventually slide off if you're leaning much (I'm nitpicking here). There were some bugs but that's honestly to be expected. Random (big!) ants here and there, and we saw geckos on the walls all the time but we didn't mind them at all. The villa has a nice little sitting area on the patio, but the air conditioning inside is appreciated after all the time in the humid heat. What we particularly appreciated about the villas was the pool/restaurant/bar service. The food was consistently good, the servers were great, the drinks kept flowing, and the pool was always nice and clean. One thing you have to try for breakfast: French toast and a banana flambe. Make sure they bring them out together, throw the banana flambe on top of the French toast, and you have the most amazing breakfast ever!
