“Great hospitality / Beauty / Adventures / Gastronomy / Paradise!”

Reviewed 19 May 2015

We are from the New York area and were looking for a place to vacation that would be different to the usual “all-inclusive” choices that you can find around the world. We were looking for a safe and peaceful place where we could explore and make our own choices and our own routine and at the same time, a place where we could relax, so we decided to go to El Nido De Las Ballenas in Las Terrenas, known for its white sand and clear water beaches. It has miles and miles of nearly virgin gorgeous beaches. We were there the week of Thanks Giving Nov 25-30, 2014 We stayed in “El Nido De Las Ballenas” and had a wonderful and unique experience. Starting with the owner of the place, Carolyn, who greeted us as if we knew her our entire life and made us feel very welcome and at home, to the simplicity and beauty of the place. The bungalows are simply gorgeous, clean and well maintained. The entire place is very family oriented and very friendly. The patio and pool area have beautiful gardens and are very inviting to spend time to relax, have drinks and meet the other guests. We were honored, along with some of the other guests, to enjoy dinner at Carolyn’s place with some of her friends, where we enjoyed a lovely gourmet meal, and still today, I am preparing some of the wonderful recipes she shared with us. (I impress my guests at home now using her recipes). Carolyn’s friends became our friends and they made us feel like part of an extended family where they included us in many of their activities and made us feel very welcome as if we knew them for long time. El Nido De Las Ballenas is a short walk to one of many amazing beaches of that area. There are many restaurants that will take your gastronomic experience to a new level due to the fusion of cultures and flavors. Also within short walk from El Nido De Las Ballenas, is a wonderful area called “El Pueblo de Los Pescadores” (The Fisherman town), where you might see the lobster or fish you will order for dinner caught fresh by the local fisherman of the area and where you will find very cute restaurants with fine cuisine from many countries right on the white sandy beach. That area is very family oriented but it offers great bars and discos if you fell like dancing the night away. The bungalows are equipped with all kitchen essentials (including small refrigerator and stove), but with so many great places to eat, you probably won’t need them. The area has a lot of Europeans that have made the paradise of Las Terrenas their home, so you can enjoy wonderful French Cafes, Italian restaurants, etc. along with the great local Dominican cuisine. There are a lot of interesting places to go and excursions you can take, which Carolyn can help you plan. Many tourists rent 4 wheelers or mopeds to tour the nearby beaches or just for fun. Since we were there for Thanks Giving day, Carolyn once again extended her hospitality by inviting us to a Thanksgiving party at the house of one of her friends. Once again she made us part of her close group of friends who really made us feel at home away from home. Carolyn showed us around, recommended many great places to visit and attended to every need we had to make sure our stay in her resort was comfortable and that we had a great experience while we were visiting and I have to say, she exceeded our expectations. At the end of our trip, we didn’t feel like we visited a small resort, we felt like we went to visit wonderful friends living in an exotic location that would be best described as paradise. We can’t wait to go back to El Nido De Las Ballenas.

Response from the owner Thank You for taking the time to write such a wonderful review! It was wonderful to have you here and we definitely look forward to your return…….we take pride in our bungalows and appreciate when guests are comfortable and pleasantly surprised with the comfort the town and we at El Nido can provide! Carolyn

“Live like comfortably a "local" at el Nido”

Reviewed 13 Mar 2015

We spent a week at Carolyn’s place. It felt like home from the moment we arrived at the airport. The personal service was perfect – not overbearing or pretentious. She is always available to tend to needs. The accommodations are in a cozy, very clean, friendly and safe setting amidst singing birds, a variety of flowers, coconut trees, and a few steps from the pool. A short walk to the beach and town of Las Terrenas provided ample opportunity for recreation and entertainment. ‘Like a local’, you can shop for fresh food, dine out, experience the town on foot, scooter or ATV, or hire a ‘taxi’ for 50 pesos. It was an ideal setting for a sunrise-beach wedding with perfect weather, privacy, and rolling waves. We anticipate many returns to this unique holiday location. The odd power outage added an excuse for a lantern/candle light dinner al fresco. We highly recommend it if ‘all inclusive” resorts and crowds are not your thing.

Response from the owner It is most appreciated that you have taken the time to write a review of our property, your comments are very much appreciated. We value your comments regarding our property as the staff take their roles very seriously to provide the quality our customers would expect and deserve. Thank you again, and we look forward to seeing you soon, Carolyn

“El Nido de Las Ballenas Bungalow is truly a tropical Paradise”

Reviewed 19 Jan 2015

We had the opportunity to spend both Christmas and New Years at Carolyn's resort. Bungalow # 1 was out home away from home for 10 days and it really was a piece of heaven. El Nido de Las Ballenas is everything as advertised and much much more. Carolyn and her staff could not have made our stay more welcoming. Her and her staff catered to our every whim. We felt perfectly safe and comfortable in our surroundings at all times. The walk to the beach and town short and interesting. The sandy beaches are truly picturesque, all sand and palm trees. The town of Las Terrenas offering lots of restaurants, shopping and entertainment. I've been fortunate to have traveled all over the world staying in places just a little out of the normal ( no all inclusive resorts mega dollars resorts for me!) and El Nido de Las Ballenas certainly met with my full approval and appreciation . I consider my vacation a complete success when I am able to hug the resort owner when saying goodbye. For the best Dominican vacation where you quickly become one of the locals you have to stay at El Nido de Las Ballenas Bungalow.

Response from the owner Thank you for taking the time to write your review of our property, your comments are very much valued. We really appreciate your comments regarding our customer service and property. Our staff take their roles very seriously and try, every day, to provide that quality customer service and upkeep of the grounds and bungalows, that our guests would expect and deserve. Thank you again, and we look forward to seeing you soon, Carolyn

“Authentic Dominican Experience”

Reviewed 29 Apr 2014

Our bungalow was gorgeous and very clean...lovely private covered verandah with table for two and sofa/coffee area. A perfect home base for adventurous travellers who want comfort after a day of exploring/beaching/climbing/riding or whatever they like to do in this beautiful area of the Dominican Republic. Quick walk to beach with great little food/bar kiosks. Longer walk into town for great, inexpensive dinners. Carolyn, the owner, is Canadian and can help plan really great excursions. We rode horses up to El Limon waterfall one day and also did a day-long boat/snorkel excursion to a very private beach. Carolyn arranged both. Night on the town dancing was great fun too. Great for those who want a better feel for the country than an all-inclusive offers. Practice your Spanish (and sometimes French) in town! Definitely take up the offer to have your fridge stocked with some groceries and beer so you can relax when you get there. Our kitchen had a gas stove (no oven) and minifridge. Well stocked with pots/french press etc. Ideal for a group of 8 - that's what we had and were able to have the whole place, including gorgeous pool, to ourselves.

Response from the owner Thank You for taking the time to review your stay here at El Nido. Thoroughly enjoyed your group - you were all great fun and a pleasure to have here. Hope to see you back again real soon!

“Wonderful time spent at El Nido de Las Ballenas Bungalow.”

Wonderful time spent at El Nido de Las Ballenas Bungalow. We were very fortunate to enjoy this experience with a great group of friends and meet several new ones along the way. Carolyn and her staff are great and ensured that we were well cared for. In addition to pre-arranging our transportation from/to the airport (which is very helpful), Carolyn made sure we had some provisions on hand for our arrival and prepared a wonderful lunch. She also arranged a fantastic boat excursion, which included snorkeling, and a BBQ lunch on a secluded beach; thank you El Thalassa: Julien & Benoit! The grounds are lush and beautiful and each bungalow is simple but met all our expectations. The Beach is a quick 5-minute walk, is un-crowded and offers beach huts, which serve food and drinks. Town is about 20 minutes. Comfortable walking shoes and a Spanish/English dictionary are an asset. Our first but hopefully not our last visit to this paradise.

Response from the owner Thank You for taking the time to provide some great feedback on your stay here! Hopefully it is not your last visit, look forward to seeing you again soon…...

“Ontario cottage country goes Caribbean”

Just returned from a fantastic week at El Nido de Las Bellenas.Just minutes from the Samana airport it was a scenic drive in to a quiet lush clean property. My wife and stayed in bungalow #3 with the queen bed.Comfortable, clean and containing all our needs for a great week.We divided our time by lounging at the pool or a quick 3 minute walk to the beach.Town is only a 25 minute walk where great restaurants can be found all the way in to suite any price budget.Full grocery store and many great veg/fruit stands aswell. The property is abundent with local gardens and ponds, well kept including a nice kidney shaped pool for cooling off.A gated property with night security is provided. This was our first adventure outside a large property and we never felt more at ease.Beaches are excellent and you can walk for miles. We went to recharge our batteries and can't think of a better place to do it.Quiet and restful reminding us of summers in cottage country,do a lot or as little as you want.Leave your watch on the nite stand, time went by too quick. Planning to return in a few months. Shout out to te staff,Caroline and thanks Juan for the authentic tour of the town. Can't forget Beethoven the meet and greet dog. Hope to see you soon.

Response from the owner Thank you for the great review! I am so happy that you had a wonderful time enjoying this little piece of paradise - look forward to your return soon!

“Peaceful home”

Reviewed 9 Jan 2014

My husband and I stayed in one of the bungalows for a week, during last xmas vacations. Carolyn proved to be a very nice hostess, who paid care to our needs and was always at disposal. The staff of the property was very friendly and efficient. We rented a bike directly from her and we were free to reach any of the beatiful beaches of the surroundings, even if the one which is at walking distance is already all you need. The pool, too, is very nice and extremely quiet and placed in a luxurious garden. Except for mosquitos, we had a great holiday!

Response from the owner Wonderful to have you both here! We are striving to do whatever we can here to minimize mosquitos on the property and we will keep working on making it better! Thank You.

“A little piece of Heaven”

Reviewed 5 Nov 2013

My husband and I spent a week at El Nido de las Ballenas in October. Carolyn was the perfect hostess and the staff were extremely efficient and friendly. Our bungalow was very clean with extra little touches to make us feel welcome. Our days were spent lazing around the beautiful pool, going into town to sip cappuccinos and do a little shopping. At night, we tried the food and Latin dancing at local restaurants on the beach. All in all, a wonderful vacation.

Response from the owner Thank you for the review - I am pleased to hear you enjoyed your time here, it was a pleasure to have you and I look forward to your return visit.

“Total Relaxation”

Reviewed 4 Nov 2013

I have been to Las Terrenas about six times and have stayed in an array of different places. I have stayed twice at El Nido de las Ballenas, most recently this past weekend. It is now under new management and I couldn't have been more pleased with my stay. My wife and I rented a single bungalow and didn't leave the property but once. We were content enjoying the beautiful pool, the peace and quiet of the tropical setting, and the comfortable amenities. The hostess was very welcoming and made sure we had all we needed to have a special weekend. For this resort like experience, it was an excellent value. Thank you and we look forward to coming back soon!

Response from the owner It was a pleasure to have you both here and I am glad you enjoyed your stay - I will look forward to having you back here in the near future!
