It was a pleasure to accommodate you and we are glad that you enjoyed your experience with MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN Kyoto. We have done our best to preserve the original architecture and design of the house by highlight such features as the Japanese style 'tatami' rooms, including the one located on the first floor that looks out onto the 'tsubioniwa' inner garden. As you mention, the futon bedding can be conveniently placed in this room which is an option for groups with young children or those with difficulties accessing the 2nd floor. We hope that everyone enjoyed a one-of-kind glimpse into life in traditional Japan. And while this house retains its original charm, we have updated it with modern facilities such as AC/heater, kitchen, and beautiful bathroom, as you mention. Like you, many guests enjoy the house's fantastic location surrounded by restaurants, cafe, the UNESCO world heritage site of Nijo Castle, public transport and more. We hope that everyone made fantastic memories living like a local and exploring all that Kyoto has to offer! One unique aspect about traditional Japanese machiya is that they can be found hidden down the smallest pathways, or nestled behind larger, more modern buildings. Sometimes, a taxi may not be able to drive right up to the machiya’s doorway, but this special character is what makes these traditional townhouses so unique.
