Quinta da Vila Maria is a former wine maker’s country estate, located in the beautiful and unspoilt countryside of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, near to the historic towns of Portalegre, Marvão and Castelo de Vide. Built around 1900 this country house, with its unique style and striking architecture, has been lovingly restored and modernised and offers comfortable accommodation to guests seeking peace and quiet, nature, a restful atmosphere, a friendly welcome and great hospitality.
Apartment “Kiwi” is for 2 guests. It is spacious and quiet with countryside views. The apartment comprises of a large, light and bright bedroom with a large double bed (160 x 200cm), an en-suite bathroom with shower, a living area with sofa, LCD TV and stereo system, and a well equipped kitchenette/dining area with breakfast bar, hob/stovetop, fridge with freezer compartment, microwave oven/grill, toaster and kettle. Apartment “Kiwi” has high ceilings and big windows giving it a light and airy feel and contains everything you need for a comfortable holiday. The apartment has free WiFi.
A continental breakfast is provided every day in your apartment so you can have breakfast at any time you want, either in your apartment or outside on the front terrace. A breakfast suitable for vegetarians or vegans can be provided on request. There are also tea and coffee making facilities in the apartment.
There is a large terrace at the front of the house - the perfect place to have dinner or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. During the day you can sunbathe and relax on the terrace beside the pond, accompanied only by birdsong and the gentle burble of water or, if you prefer shade, under the trees of the “linden tree terrace” or beneath one of the many olive, cork or fruit trees.
Guests are welcome to walk around the Quinta’s 7½ acres/3 hectares of vineyard and land. The vineyard, which is organic, has many grape vines that are in the region of 100 years old. Being a traditional Alentejo vineyard the vines are not on wires but grow freely like a bush and there are olive and cork trees growing amongst the vines. One of the olive trees is reportedly over 1000 years old. The old adega, which is now reception, still has the large “talha” or clay wine pots, some of which date to the 1920s, that many years ago were used to make red wine.
If you are interested in nature various animals and birds can be seen at the Quinta with many more species to be seen in the surrounding area of the Natural Park.
The barns and other outbuildings are full of old agricultural implements and wine making equipment. We are happy to show guests round if they are interested and share some of the history of this estate.

“A lovely typicall Portuguese farm inmmersed in a wonderfull natu”
We spent 2 nights at Quinta Vila Maria, and we cannot point a thing that we did not like. This guest room is placed in a very small village surrounded by Portuguese original woods of oak trees and traditional cultures of olive trees & vineyards. The place is so quiet, perfect for relaxing. The accommodation is really good with separate apartments (bedroom + living room) much better and much more comfortable than an hotel room, specially having kids. Plus at a very affordable price and hosted by a charming British couple that ensures nothing is missing... A great place that we strongly recommend.
Response from the owner Thank you very much for taking the time to write your review on the Trip Advisor website and for your very kind comments. We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us at Quinta da Vila Maria. We hope to welcome you back again sometime soon! Best regards.
